My mom had Cushing’s disease. At her biggest she was around 400lbs. It’s shameful how many doctors wouldn’t listen to her when she told them there was something wrong. No amount of diet or exercise helped her lose weight. She had high blood pressure, loss of bone density, the classic hump on her upper back/neck, debilitating migraines, and mood swings. She fell into a deep depression when she was sick and I honestly don’t know how she did it. If we went out to eat people would look at her so disgusted. It took 2 surgeries to remove the entire tumor she had on her pituitary gland. She’s much better now but is on so many medications still.
Yeah with all those signals a lot of those doctors shouldn’t have peaked the eyebrows common sense alone should have made them look at those facts to see somethings up
Imagine going back to school 50 pounds lighter and telling the kids that bullied you they essentially bullied you for having cancer. And the only reason you were overweight is because you were sick and a tumor was messing up your hormones. The guilt trip that those kids would have would be huuuuuuuge.
Fun fact: This episode saved life od 33 years old woman form Poland. She gain 18 kg in 6 months and no doctor was able to diagnosed her (she had other symphtoms too) One day Małgorzata saw this episode and understood that she has Cushing. Sad thing is that she went to many doctors after that and no one belived her that she has Cushing (doctors in Poland hate when patient is diagnosing herself) Even specialist in Cushing dissese. Even specialist in Cushing dissese told her to eat less. Finally, she belived that she don't have Cushing and that she is fat because she eat too much. One day she went to the doctor prof. Grzegorz Zieliński and he diagnosed her with Cushing. Right after meeting with doctor she was scheduled operation. Now she is fine :) (sorry for my english, hope you understad the story)

I was surprised it was Chase to realize obesity was a symptom, considering he was blatantly insulting the girl’s laziness and mom’s incompetence the entire time lol
How can someone "insult laziness" ? It's not a quality, it's a flaw, and a very very big one, he was not insulting but throwing facts in the face of evebody, and it was nothing more than what we all think about fat people, if that fact insult someone them they are just trying to justify theyr own laziness trying to act like it's ok to deform yourself eating like an elephant. Of course in this case it back fires on Chase face, the girl was fat because of a disease and not for laziness. But that is not the case for most people.

@@youknowwho257 ok? I wasn’t insulting Chase or claiming obesity is always due to a disease. It did kind of seem like he had a personal vendetta against the kid because he never got that pissy about drug addicts or other people with unhealthy habits, but he also isn’t wrong.
Watching this show as an adult now, I realize House does indeed care, despite his impatience for stupidity. He is consistently looking at his patient through the window from afar, trying to make them alright again.
Sadly, my own child had this, she’s in remission now. My daughter was always super skinny and then suddenly put on a lot of weight. She had multiple health problems that kept popping up between the ages of 13 & 15. After 2 years of looking for answers she was diagnosed with Cushing’s disease and a microadenoma was removed from her pituitary this past February.
I also have cushing's and it took a long time to be diagnosed, symptoms first started when I was really young but I wasn't fully diagnosed until I was 20. There is a 90% chance of reoccurrence with this illness unfortunately so please make sure she gets her dexamethasone test done at least once a year, it will sadly have to be done every year for the rest of her life. I'm so happy she was diagnosed finally though and had a successful surgery! One thing I just want to say though is please just understand that even though she has had the surgery a lot of the mental side effects unfortunately never fully go away. I wish you guys the best!
I loved the mom in this episode. Her mom was always loving and supportive and also tried to help with her diet but not in a harmful way. What ended up hurting this kid besides her tumor was the gross mistreatment she was getting at school that led her to start popping diet pills behind her moms back
This is what I think of doing to help my daughter and son, start making more healthy but fillling foods that will help them loose weight and do some fun activities but I will never let them take pills or stop them from eating a meal
I would argue, that not letting them overeat so much would be the better plan. They womt feel the need to start a diet if they never got that big in the first place.
The mom would rather deal with a brain surgery than a mastectomy. It's her daughter's life we're talking about! I'd rather have a healthy daughter with no breasts ( speaking from experience ), than any other option... She almost looks happy when they tell her that it's a brain tumor 🙄 Good mom!

I've watched practically every episode on this channel, all the major surgery scenes and I've never cringed as badly as when the surgeon went through her upper lip with that scalpel.
When I had dental surgery under local only the dentist had to cut my upper gum to remove a baby tooth which had grown up and out of my gum instead of falling out. Turns out I'm fairly resistant to dental anaesthetic. Nice. Next time I was there she put a needle straight into the squishy stuff under my tongue. Worst month of my life having those surgeries.
There's no excuses for being fat or over weight. Unless you have a serious disease that makes it impossible for you to loose weight. Other than that we're very lazy people.
I’ve had doctors make much of my obesity. I’ve been denied treatment for a condition four different doctors have verified I have because the doctor was sure the problem was my weight. When I developed my chronic condition, I weighed 100 lbs. at 5’ 5” tall. I was really, really skinny. I became obese as a result of my illness. I did not get sick because I was obese. Doctors should know better, but prejudice is a powerful thing.
I had a traumatic slip n fall. Bc of the “way” I fell, I was treated like I was lying about how badly I hurt. And I must be after a lawsuit. Or drugs. I even had a fan freaking spine doc ask me if I was “high.” All bc I was ghost white, deep purple eye bags, & glazed eyes - from chronic severe pain & lack of sleep. And then when my doc finally believed me - after I demanded an mri or more invasive testing to prove where I was hurting mind you. He put me on a whole amount of different meds to find one that worked. Well. Side effect they didn’t warn me of? Swiss cheese mental capacity. And weight gain. And I mean weight. gain! Sadly a side effect of the chronic pain means working out isn’t possible for me. It’ll lay me out & send me to er for morphine shot after shot. Now people look at me & think I’m fat just bc I’m lazy or my diet is poorly. Which is screwed up all kinds of ways. I’m even having weight loss surgery bc it’ll help me kick start some loss. & help w my pain. But it’s only a band aid for the real reason.
Doctors DO know better, that's why they're doctors. You should listen to medical professionals and stop assuming you know better than them. There is no medical condition which can force you to become obese.
So Chase don’t like heavy set people, Foreman hates homeless people, what does Cameron dislikes? I only ask about her because I know House likes/dislikes everyone equally, unless they are interesting
@@fnafking4154 Well, Special means better, greater, or otherwise different from what is usual. and Treatment means the manner in which someone behaves towards or deals with someone or something.
To me, this episode proved that Chase was actually a good doctor. Initially I had my doubts about him, and I didn't always like him, but him mentioning "what if it's a symptom?" meant that he was willing to look past his own myopic view of childhood obesity to get the correct diagnosis. And he was right. House may not have ever been able to figure this one out if Chase hadn't pushed him in the right direction.
I’d say he’s good for reconsidering his stance, but only that. People have died or had their lives destroyed because doctors refused to think beyond their biases and stand acting as “NOBLE GUARDIANS OF THE NOBLE HEALTHCARE SYSTEM!!!!!!!!! YE SHALL NOT TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE SYSTEM WHILE I STAND HERE, YOU DISGUSTING LOSER FREAK!!! Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go charge 1-3k to your insurance for the 8th time you’ve come here, because the 5 minutes I’ve spent mocking you for the 8th time is worth is.” I literally had a doctor walk in (I was freaking out because I had my period 3 times in a month’s span.) take one single look (you know where) and said aloud “Oh, you’re just fat.” And walked out. I didn’t see her the rest of the appointment. I was forbidden from taking any tests to see what may be the issue. It was the only time I ever had so many periods so quick, I may be sterile now, I don’t know and my mental state sucks so much I’m not going to go pay those freaks to confirm and then screw my mental state forever. That is only one of many incidents that have happened in my attempts to get help. So sorry, I don’t think kindly of doctors being stubborn and refusing to do any treatments because they think they can read your entire life by starring at your mid section. I think any who does so should be fired and blacklisted.
He is a good doctor because he doesn't sugarcoat things. He isn't wrong about obesity being an issue in children nowadays. He isn't wrong about children losing interest in sports. He is also not wrong about how certain countries have more obese people than others. People who speak the harsh truth are always good professionals because they can challenge their own point of view.
@@tunim4354 Children are losing interest in sports because pathetic past-their-primes-in-their-twenties losers decide regularly to gatekeep and bully kids they don’t think fit their idea of perfection, so more and more kids simply go “why bother if I’m never going to be allowed to play?” That’s a failure of adults, not of the children. I’m a TH-cam comment section Doctor does that count? I’m currently studying my twitch account doctorate in order diagnosis my favourite twitch streamers. Wish me luck
I wish more people treated obesity as a symptom more often. My dad's doctor almost killed him, because she was telling him all his issues were because he was fat. Turns out, he was fat because he was retaining 50 lbs of water in his body, which was because of his heart malfunctioning. And the heart was malfunctioning was due to her putting him on medication that could not be taken together. The mix of medication she put him on either caused, or exacerbated any preexisting heart conditions. Luckily after he called himself an ambulance and spent some time in intensive care, they figured out the problem and he's on a road to recovery.
When I watched the last TH-cam video about this episode I was screaming at the screen "She says her daughter is dieting and excercising AND taking diet pills and you don't think the weight could be a symptom?!"
House and the team never trust anyone. It's not they assume that they are lying, just that they don't do as much as they should, so they still try to rule out the obvious.
@@drkstrnd As the original commentator pointed out, they knew she was taking diet pills and wanted to lose weight. So it's my guess, that House just believed they were stupid.
4:05 to 6:04 is probably one of my favorite parts of of House. This shows them just brainstorming for possible problems and you can FEEL the urgency. There need to be more situations like this.
I've seen like 3 episodes and it feels like every episode is: obscure condition comes in, House comes up with a potential solution, everyone says it's wrong but they don't have a choice and do what House says, treatment does alrightish, House insists his original diagnosis is wrong, everyone insists his first diagnosis is right, one again it's Houses world and they're all living in it so House does some thing that "is gonna kill the patient and isn't right" but then it miraculously is and the patient most of the time lives but sometimes doesn't if the disease was fatal anyways. Is that a good episode synopsis or have I just seen very similar episodes?
The scene where House, Chase and Foreman do a last chance dianostic spitball between each other is probably one of my favorite moments in the entire show. They don't have time for the usual jokes, insults or games, they all just very clinically and professionally work off each other to find solutions and options. Even when House comes up with a crazy theory that the team finds 'impossible', they don't call him crazy or threaten to stop him, they just listen through his explanation and are willing to go with it after hearing his explanation. It always feels like a breeze of fresh air to me, seeing that part play out
Scenes like this help convey just how much House himself lost interest in the cases. Like any addict, he needed to keep upping the ante with mind games, relationship drama & flat out crimes. That's the House who goes to prison. But the one who became a medical legend is here.
It's weird how fast all the footage from the BEFORE where people still can hug and gather around and eat and breathe freely become so strangely discomforting to watch.
I appreciate at the end her mom says “she always looked fantastic” My edit bc of responses: I was just happy she was showing love to her daughter. Yes, being that weight can be unhealthy (depending upon one’s genetic factors), but she was trying and doing what she could to get herself better, and her mom was just supporting her and showing her love.
That made me gag... How neglectful a mother can be to have such an obese 10 year old and think nothing it wrong with your child? She should have seen her daughter was eating right and having enough activity and looked for medical answers... Her believe that an obese 10 year old looks fantastic means her child would have died as a child from a brain tumour
@@Artbug I would look at the basic humanity in this issue. Yes, we could sit here an make the argument that if her mother did not bring her in to the doctor to evaluate her child's health, then yes, her child would have eventually died. But, the mother did bring her child in to see the doctor, did she not? She did do what she could to help her daughter, did she not? Producing productive and essential care to one's child is a lot more nuanced and complicated then one simple youtube comment could even comprehend. Weight and health are a lot more complicated issues as well... Shaming someone for their weight will ultimately most likely not help them to feel motivated to live their healthiest or most fulfilling lives ... it will ultimately make them go into an extremely depressive and isolating state .... Would you rather her mother say something different in that moment, like, "he's right, you do look fantastic ... now" ? I genuinely appreciated the mother's comment ... Anywho, hope you have a great day!
@@saneelat.7684 Weight is complex, but losing weight isn't that complicated. Bottom line for the vast majority of people to lose weight, (not necessarily be healthy, live your best life, etc), you just need to have a caloric deficit. If you put in more energy than your body can burn, you gain weight. Don't buy into all those fad diets and all that other garbage. That's really it. It takes willpower to fight your base urges and make those lifestyle changes required to lose your weight. It just isn't complicated.
@@Sapperbounded sadly no, your body already has the ability to get rid of any calories it doesn't need if the hormonal conditions aren't telling it to store fat. People who are heavily obese in a realistic sense should have almost no reason to be hungry, they're carrying all the food they ever need on them all the time, but the body isn't set up to actually use it usually from insulin

4:28 these were the best diagnostic moments. House gives up on all the sarcasm and snark and just has his team feed him information so he can rule it out and narrow the problem down. It's too bad the later seasons were so character driven that the cases took a back seat and they only had time for snarky diagnostic conversations and not serious ones.
@@tesnimguesmi6087 House goes in depth to show how complicated being a physician is, and that even after years of medical school and decades of work, even the doctors sometimes have to work against the clock to figure out just what is wrong, painstakingly crossing off a hundred different possibilities until you get to one and hoping treatment works. It also shows, albeit a bit inaccurately, how treatments are performed and the serious level of medical advancement we've achieved in the last 50 years alone.
My GP hated that I started watching House. After I got hooked I used to diagnose myself always picking the most out there option! I love how frustrated he'd get with my brilliant questions.

Honestly? I can't blame her. Evolution has programmed us to procreate, not be smart. Whether that's politically correct or not, there it is.
This episode echoes strongly in how Chase eventually succeeded House in becoming the head of diagnostic medicine in the final season. He had that kind of outside the box thinking that even Foreman or Cameron didn't have. Chase was House's finest student.
It's true, cortisol goes up and down rapidly and multiple times throughout the day. I had to have a special test with them taking my blood every half hour over 4 hours. That was the only test that showed my cortisol levels were off even though I had 4 blood tests previously.
This is still one of the most heartwarming endings this show ever had, with her wheeling out of the hospital and hugging Foreman in thanks for helping her. The music just added to that beautiful moment.
The only time I got the diagnosis before the team 😂😂😂. Only coz I’ve done a dissertation on obesity and Cushing’s was a rare cause with the pituitary adenoma often causing the hypothyroidism
I’m only starting medical school in a couple of weeks, but yes the doctors are doing a great job as always and I hope I can become one who’s just as good.
Yeah, obesity was a symptom of my disease as well (Hashimoto's Thyroiditis). I was (roughly) 600 pounds at my heaviest. I insisted something was wrong; they said I just had bad food behaviors. I'd been vegetarian for 10+ years at that point. So, yes - my obesity was medical.
The way you said "I've been a vegetarian for 10+ years" is implying that vegetarians can't have bad food behaviours, which is wrong. Pair that frase with your last one and you're basically saying that if you're vegetarian and obese, it has to be medical. Too bad your fatness got to your brain and is preventing you from thinking right.
I KNOW! When she stood up I was like....heavy?! I'd kill to be that type of 'heavy' she was tall, and a mother of a 10 year old. What was she to be a runway modal?
Yeah and that's why they don't get the medical attention they need. If this was real life she would be dead by now because nobody would have thought obesity is a symptoms of something more dangerous. She would have been laugh at by doctors.
so true, I was almost triggered and glad that episode ended with obesity as a symtom. It shows how easily obese people can be underdiagnosed cause doctors reacting like this
But they are right 99% of the time lol, real life is not like House; if I'm a smoker and show up to the hospital with lung cancer the doc is gonna tell me to stop smoking, who cares that it was actually caused by something else, he'd be right almost every time. And before you say smoking is a choice and obesity is not, I disagree they are pretty much the same degree of choice, yes it's harder for some people to eat less but so it is for some to quit, both have a strong genetic component.

I always thought of House as a sci-fi show, because knowing how Healthcare in America works, I can't figure out how people is able to afford the huge amount of meds and procedures they do on the patients, absolutely useless since they are not treating the right disease. I mean, in some episodes they used Epipens like it was sugar, and a pair of Epinephrine pens costs 700$.
Because they’re rare cases it may be classed as experimental and that would go under the research budget. In which case they would write up the cases for medical journals which earns the hospital prestige and perhaps some money

But doc, its probably just a cold Sorry sir, we need to LOOK for more health problems instead of pushing some pills to help your sore throat
Except 99.999999% of the time.. There is NO disease that explains it. "Obesity as a symptom" is quite rare and the diseases that ACTUALLY cause it are even RARER.
40 years ago 3% of Americans were obese, today it's 40-60% depending on the state. It's not genetics. It's diet. We replaced fat with sugars, and we snack all day not letting our insulin level drop between meals causing insulin resistance.
I'm getting really tired of people preaching fat acceptance; I've been fat, it's not good. I was 170 pounds when I was nine and was able to stay at that weight for eight years before loosing ten pounds, I was not healthy at that age or weight. People need to realize the only ones who want fat acceptance are the people who are too lazy to lose weight and want others to be in the same situation so they can feel normal.
And also replaced fat (animal fat) with oil, (plant fat), which is too high in polyunsaturated fats, which causes hyperinsulinemia and similar problems, which I think fructose and alcohol can do too. There is also lower D3 hormone levels to take into account.

I really enjoy this younger House. He genuinely seems to care about the patient, as much as his puzzle, maybe even more than the puzzle. He genuinely doesn't want the girl to suffer or die, and that matters more than his personal enjoyment. House honestly lost sight of that as time went on. He didn't notice how much more he started to invest into the game more than the saving of lives.
I love that you can tune into this show at any point and still enjoy it to the max! Feels like the afternoon after a long tiring day at school and hearing the opening theme 😍
House has very good analytical skills. Other doctor's do agree to his conclusion at some point but cannot even imagine coming up with similar inferences, except Chase maybe a few times.
I developed Cushings as a result of being prescribed a corticosteroid medication. I literally gained 230 pounds in less than 3 months. I've never had a weight issue, I was planning on running my third consecutive NYC marathon later that year, I've always been athletic. It was seriously mind blowing. The minute I weaned myself off of the steroid based medication, the weight gain stopped. Thank goodness I have a decent diet which allowed me to lose weight. But, it takes a good amount of time to lose over 200 pounds. I still have 50 pounds to go. But, the skin breaks from gaining so much weight so quickly will probably require plastic surgery.
I love how house tries to hide it but he really do care about people's and that's why he was standing there looking at her and trying to think alternative ways to not have her life ruined.
He should have said, "Wow, you're looking much HEALTHIER." The poor girl was getting too much bullying from her peers, she didn't need more back handed criticism from an overgrown Ken doll.
I love watching the gears turn in House's head. I work on production lines at my work, and as one of the senior guys, I'm often called over to help diagnose and fix problems with said lines. Whenever I get stumped by something that's not obvious, I go into House mode and get those gears moving. It becomes a challenge to solve the problem.

He is a good doctor because he doesn't sugarcoat things. He isn't wrong about obesity being an issue in children nowadays. He isn't wrong about children losing interest in sports. This episode echoes strongly in how Chase eventually succeeded House in becoming the head of diagnostic medicine in the final season. He had that kind of outside the box thinking that even Foreman or Cameron didn't have. Chase was House's finest student.
House: "how dare you do this morally grey thing"
Also house "time to commit medical malpractice"
It's true, cortisol goes up and down rapidly and multiple times throughout the day. I had to have a special test with them taking my blood every half hour over 4 hours. That was the only test that showed my cortisol levels were off even though I had 4 blood tests previously.
8:34 - You look fantastic!!!!
Foremans face is like "Dude we get it, she was fat"
This is still one of the most heartwarming endings this show ever had, with her wheeling out of the hospital and hugging Foreman in thanks for helping her. The music just added to that beautiful moment.
As a scientist, I've always loved this episode. The fact that something is 'average' does NOT mean that it's representative.
The only time I got the diagnosis before the team 😂😂😂. Only coz I’ve done a dissertation on obesity and Cushing’s was a rare cause with the pituitary adenoma often causing the hypothyroidism
thank you for being a doctor !
I’m only starting medical school in a couple of weeks, but yes the doctors are doing a great job as always and I hope I can become one who’s just as good.
@@arunsreenivasan2074 we need more people going to medical school. good luck !!!
@@MrRrusiii Thank you so much for your kind words ☺️
My mother has a pituitary adenoma too- a prolactinoma. Best of luck!!!
You're talking as if being vegetarian won't make you fat.
@@Lord-kd3ee I'm a fat vegetarian, so that obviously isn't true. You need to read my post again, and also have a 10-year-old help you read. 🙃
How are you now? Is your metabolism improving? Do you have trouble breathing?
@@nont18411 No, I'm okay now. 🥰
the fact that that mother is considered 'heavy' absolutely astounds me.
Rubenesque, I'd say.
Especially in USA.. 😅
It was probably in the script but they cast more for her height than her weight.
I KNOW! When she stood up I was like....heavy?! I'd kill to be that type of 'heavy' she was tall, and a mother of a 10 year old. What was she to be a runway modal?
She wasn’t skinny
Chase's reaction = the reaction of most RL doctors as well as ordinary people whenever they see overweight individuals.
@@Vacuon nah mate, my grandmother who'd never smoked a day in her life was diagnosed with asthma in her late fifties by her deadshit GP because why bother actually running any tests!? Turned out it was secondary lung cancer that had spread/developed after she'd had a hysterectomy because of ovarian cancer several years before, and proper follow ups weren't done. It spread to her brain eventually, and she spent the last 15yrs of her life in pain and misery then went to an early grave... why? Because most doctors are arrogant fuckwits.
@@Vacuon if what you are saying is true about how doctor actual treat patients, then that's why most people do not trust hospital. Nevermind the fact that it's expensive. then to be smirked and be overlooked and still ended up sick is fucking disgusting.

@@noob6219 No, because that's how a mother sees her child, as a whole person, from the inside out. So, of course she's gonna be a little biased. I have cushings disease. Its horrible and what this episode doesn't say is that you have about a 90% chance of reoccurrence, your symptoms don't just go away unfortunately even after they remove the tumor and your life span is decreased. You lose yourself mentally and physically.
I always thought of House as a sci-fi show, because knowing how Healthcare in America works, I can't figure out how people is able to afford the huge amount of meds and procedures they do on the patients, absolutely useless
since they are not treating the right disease.
Also, if you go through emergency they dont charge you right away, maybe they get the big bill later on lol or have insurance or something
It's called insurance.
Its called debt. And now your a slave to the system. Welcome to America

I have a friend who had Cushing. Her father was big and so was her mother. She was diagnosed when she started gaining a lot of weight when she was 33.
04:40 one of the reasons why House is the best boss. Ofcourse he'll mock you and call you a moron when you are one. Not at times like these.
Ah, a nice wholesome House episode. Feels good to have these since a bunch of the other episodes are filled with pure stress and anxiety.
It's not JUST sugar.
Did you learn nothing from this episode? Stop thinking obesity has to do with what people eat. Stop.
@@juniorzablosky9608 or, ya know, stop self deprecating.
And also replaced fat (animal fat) with oil, (plant fat), which is too high in polyunsaturated fats, which causes hyperinsulinemia and similar problems, which I think fructose and alcohol can do too. There is also lower D3 hormone levels to take into account.
The thing I love about this show is how house never expects or wants thanks for his work. He saved lives and even gets scorn for it sometimes. To him, it's all about the problem and the solution to such. This tv show really shows how geniuses operate. A fight between ethics and resolutions is a tough and horrible fight.
I had the same operation in the UK, but they went through my nose.
It took 2 years for diagnosis as it occurs in 1 in 200,000 and more in women than men

I don’t know but the last minute diagnosis and the surgery success and seeing her mother happy at the surgeon just made my day !
I love how House didn't need the MRI to know it was Cushing's
WHY ARE YOU EVERYWHERE!!
H A because he’s just some guy without a mustache.
I'm pretty sure House knows everything.
That's because you don't need an MRI to know it's Cushing's. Cushing's is diagnosed through clinical symptoms and blood tests. The MRI is only needed to locate the tumour.
I didn’t know House was an anime??

I really enjoy this younger House. He genuinely seems to care about the patient, as much as his puzzle, maybe even more than the puzzle. He genuinely doesn't want the girl to suffer or die, and that matters more than his personal enjoyment. House honestly lost sight of that as time went on. He didn't notice how much more he started to invest into the game more than the saving of lives.
