Local hospital got in trouble for not being able to get a scan of a patient who was to heavy for the machine. The hospital had to borrow a scanner from the local zoo that was used to scan the larger animals. That alone should be a wake up call, when you have to be scanned with zoo equipment to get tested.

If he's too big for the MRI then go to the closest zoo and use the MRIs they use on elephants and wildebeest. That's not a joke, that's what they do in real life.
@@andrewweninger1059 we had a case of an obese lady with diabetic ketoacidosis. Was big enough that it took around 8-9 people to move her. Couldn’t get a line initially because she was too big, couldn’t get an abg to check the acidosis. It was just bad.

She didn’t survive past the night either but from what I know, they placed an arterial line since they needed constant values anyway. The patient was comatose and she passed away in the middle of the night

Cameron does a lot of sweet gestures during the show, and many times it causes problems or would even kill the patient, if House didn't intervene. Her morality is the biggest point of weakness out of any character on this show.

When you're trying to prevent the patient from falling, but you sink into his gravity well.
Funny thing is that if that situation would happen in the real world, she wouldn't be trying to stop him from falling. She would be backing off because she doesn't have the strength to stop him from falling and trying to stop him could cause serious damage to her. I am a radiographer and one of the first things we are taught when dealing with falling large patients, is don't catch, dodge.

They forget how being normal weight feels like long before and they use to it
I used to be 60 pounds over and that caused lower back pain, heartburn issues and made it difficult to do normal things like sitting up using my core alone or other basic movements. Losing the weight solved so many problems, so I will never understand how people can not only live like that long term, but also pretend like they are "fine" when it is biologically impossible to not experience pain due to that kind of weight. If nothing else, lower back pain/problems would be an absolute inevitability.

"I broke a machine that's more than the mortgage of my house and can possibly save lives!" I wouldn't want to brag either.
However, he bares no responsibility to the hospital, their equipment, or the other patients whereas Cameron does bare those responsibilities and she disregarded them for no legitimate reason. If she actually believed the machine could handle that much weight then there was no reason to lie to the other staff about his weight. She lied because she knew that none of them would assist her and they would've informed Cuddy. Cameron was jerk in this episode.

@@Para1122 In trying so hard to not be a jerk to this guy by being direct about his weight and the equipment they have not being able to accommodate him, she was being a jerk, actually an irresponsible, inconsiderate jerk to every other patient who might’ve needed that machine as well as the hospital in having to replace it and the window he smashed through because she drugged him when he exercised his right to leave the hospital.
Cameron cost that hospital millions of dollars and for all she knows, she cost another patient invaluable time in being properly diagnosed and or treated, possibly even death because she knowingly disregarded that machine’s weight limit that is put in place for the good of all the patients’ who might need it for the one patient whose feelings she could not hurt by being direct.
Cameron was way more than a jerk in this episode and she was a jerk to everyone else in that hospital and the hospital itself because she decided to treat this patient as if he didn’t weigh what he did. If she wants to only have one patient to consider and be responsible for then she should be a personal physician instead of working for a hospital where she’s responsible for not just her own patient but the patient coming in next whose medical treatment relies on the hospital staff not risking a million dollar piece of equipment for the sake of a patient’s feelings.
Being direct is different than being rude.

This man's character was really well written and the actor also played him really well. I love that he appropriatly responds to everyone, Foreman shows a little hostility, he pushes back, Cameron treats him with care, he responds softly and calmly.

For anyone curious, the conclusion to the episode was that he has lung cancer. His weight has nothing to do with his issues

This is not completely accurate, being overweight can both directly and indirectly cause all sorts of problems, especially some forms of cancers. Is it an exact science? No. But there are still increased risks of diseases and complications caused by being overweight, especially 300+ pounds overweight. It's completely reasonable to assume he most-likely would not have gotten lung cancer if he wasn't so overweight.

Sad part about this episode is that it wasn't entirely related to his weight but rather lung cancer. He truthfully didn't know what disease he had and in the end was most likely by chance. Although he dealt with his hospitalization in the worst way possible and made it harder on himself and the doctors.
Why is that a sad part? I think it's the best part of the episode since too many people get improper medical care due to doctors and nurses constantly being unable to fathom that fat people can actually suffer from illnesses that have no relationship to their size just like thin people can.
No, the sad part is that it was absolutely entirely unrelated to his weight, lung cancer is one of the few cancers where weight doesn't increase the risk of catching it. Therefore, if House and all of his other doctors had focused on his symptoms rather than his weight, they'd have found his cancer a long time ago and most likely would have been able to treat him. If you think the episode showed that he dealt with hospitalization wrong you completely missed the point, the episode completely validates George, he had every right to be pissed at every doctor who ever saw him. Every doctor and hospital failed him because they only searched for issues related to his weight no matter how many times the test for diabetes and other stuff came back clean.

It's nice to see that when he realizes Cuddy's concern comes from a good place, the patient stays level-headed and empathetic when dealing with her. He doesn't bash her or shut her down like House might, but responds directly to each thing with wit, calm, and care. He knows he's not living the healthiest life, but it's not a problem to him, because that's not what he wants out of his time on earth. He doesn't lash out because she questions his life decisions, and instead tries to make light of his situation and ease her worries, because of course a doctor is going to worry about a man who's 450 Lb. He was a better man than many, but stubborn, and not as honest with those doctors as he could have been about why he's like this. It makes the twist to all of this all the more tragic.

If you've never had your head inside one you wouldn't understand. It's claustrophobic in there in addition to to noises it makes. It's unnerving to the inside there knowing what you're up against. Waking up inside one had to be down right terrifying.
I wouldn’t have risked my hospitals MRI machine for that guy. And he has the nerve to complain? Hate that guy.
@@mikevignola4213 i can vouch for this. my boss had severe claustrophobia and had to be MRI'd. she literally clawed scratchmarks into the inside of the machine. dunno if they ever replaced those panels. so if you got an MRI at cedars sinai in los angeles, and were wondering what those claw marks were, now you know.

Cameron should've been fired in addition to paying for the shattered window and paying toward the new MRI machine. She also violated her oath as doctor to do no harm by drugging her own patient and the other patients who needed an MRI to help diagnose and treat their illnesses. Cameron also violated the patient's right to refuse treatment including life saving treatments. This whole episode has Cameron lecturing others on the rights of obese patients and how to treat them no differently than a patient with a normal weight but the dignity of one patient shouldn't come at the expense of the other patients' right to receive potentially life saving medical treatment. Cameron should've been held responsible for her reckless conduct and she should've been sued for malpractice.
I HATED her character I thought I was the only one
I didn't know (having not seen the whole episode) that she had drugged him. That guy could have broken a hip leading to even more immobility leading to probable death from that fall. He could have hit his head and died and he could have been cut hit an artery and died when he went through the glass. MY GOD! IRL she wouldn't have been JUST fired, she would have been arrested for assault. (BTW although not a regular watcher I know enough about the show to know that he ALSO has committed assault MULTIPLE times and he would ALSO have been arrested multiple times and fired. It's the least believable part of the show that people who assault their patients all the time aren't fired and in jail.

Professionally speaking, when there is a weight limit on something, it means that is the maximum weight you can put on it while also being able to claim for a new one should it break down.
For example, if something says it can hold up to 1 tonne, it can likely hold more, but it is not designed to do so. This is a safety limit; If you exceed it and your machine breaks, it's your own damned fault, and you just have to shell out and buy a new one.

This case struck me as a dramatized version of one of the most difficult conflicts a physician must deal with when treating a difficult patient. As a future physician, I have thought about how frustrating trying to treat a patient who clearly needs medical care but is refusing any help will be. In this episode, the entire care team knows that something else must be going wrong with the patient and cannot accept letting him walk out of the hospital. They try explaining how serious the situation could be, how his current lifestyle will only make his health worse, and the most difficult part of this case is that the patient knows all of these things already and has accepted these consequences in order to enjoy his life of indulgence. This touches on the ethical principle of autonomy, which governs how medical professionals must respect the wishes and beliefs of patients to manage their own informed care. In this episode, a physician in the real world must accept this patients AMA refusal as there are no grounds to hold him at the clinic. I think what makes this conflict very difficult to navigate is that I believe physicians also have a duty to express their medical expertise and try to ensure patients have all of the information possible to make their decision. Coercion gets dropped a lot in these cases, and we must not over reach and engage in coercion, but I do believe we must try everything to convince a patient to act in their own best interest, which the patient is clearly not doing in this case. Preserving autonomy while still doing your best at getting the patient to accept care can coincide, but there is no rule book that I have been taught of when to “give up” and cease efforts of keeping a patient in the hospital. This seems like a gray area that I am excited to learn more about during my clinical rotations

His hardest job was to convince them they could lose weight and improve their lives and health. In his own case after losing 200 lbs he began to put the weight back on again. With the help of a therapist he figured out the root of his problem was childhood abuse.This was not an isolated case, such psychological problems are more common than you might think.
