When I watch guys like working on engines with all the right tools and knowledge, I remember my first years learniing how to do this. A screwdriver ( or kitchen knife ) Set of visegrips. Crescent wrench and a hammer. A .lot of skinned knuckles. I remember changing rings, bearings ,other stuff on a back street in Mexico city. Holding the engiine up with the wheel jack on the front pulley of the crankshaft. I was under it when it slipped off the jack and mashed my right middle finger. Took a few days ,but the car went another 10K miles before it blew up !!!! That was the winter of '75--'76 AH Youth !!!!!

Ian Tyrrell is a man who can not only repair and restore all these beautiful cars, but also has the gumption to take his hands fully off the steering wheel when driving them. I think we can all respect that!
As a car mad 17 year old kid I would have loved to have a job working in Ian’s workshop...I’m 61 now ,still a mad petrolhead ,and would still love a job in Ian’s workshop...This mercurial mans knowledge knows no bounds..essential viewing. Thank you Mr Tyrrell.
I've just discovered your super site, January 18, 2024. Ian, you have the ability of sharing your vast knowledge in simple but clear language. The video "turbo-charged & supercharged" video is a fine example. You bring to light the difficult challenge of explaining advanced technical issues to the likes of us.... I'm in my ninetieth year, and now enjoy some of the finer technical points of my petrolheaded mind, energized after arrival in Canada in 1951 at the tender age of 17. As a young man in Eastern Canada, I enjoyed many British four cylinder sports cars: an early MGTC, a TD, then a 1955 BN1 Healey, a Mini Cooper, and later a Spitfire. Your videos have given me a deeper understanding of what I experienced with cars and technology of that era. As an aside, and you may hardly believe this story. I raced the Healey briefly in 1957 on an airport circuit, learning so much about 'accelerated' driving, and the motorsport world. I have photos of my efforts in one event following a Montreal owner driving his Jaguar XKSS. I hardly believe this myself, but photographs clearly show the 'SS' and myself in action. My Dad (RIP), was a mechanic all his life beginning in the 1930s. He taught me a few tricks of the trade including the use of a long screwdriver to diagnose noises. Thanks Ian for reminding me of how brilliant a mechanic my Dad was.
I like both, and I'm not very technical, but can appreciate the technical. Rarely over my head to the point of frustration. Mr Tyrrell is an artist and I am an art lover.
@barry rudge I'm not very technical but I think I like this channel a little more. Sometimes Harry's intros are a little tedious, IMO. And Mr Tyrrell seems to capture the 'rush' of driving pleasure more on video and the sound you hear in the cabin. With Harry and most journos, he doesn't pause his voice long enough and I have to imagine eveything based on his words rather than receiving the experience. Here I feel more part of the driving experience. Would love it if the drives were a little longer.
Listening to Ian is easy. He speaks well and comfortably. What makes it even better is plethora of knowledge he shares as he talks about what he is doing, adding that oh so important bit of history which adds so much to the fun of the story and process. He really knows his stuff. Fun as heck for me.
I’m 63 years-old and can remember quite clearly how cheap these cars were to buy used and how nobody entered one in a Ferrari gathering because they were not considered proper Ferrari’s. Of course, AC Cobras languished in dealership showrooms, too. Because for less money you could buy a Corvette that had roll-up windows and a heater. Lol. Time has a funny way of making us look back at things through a different lens. Love these videos.
The only reason this channels subs is not in the millions is that it's still new and people haven't found it yet, but they will and I'm so glad I found it because it's honestly my favourite channel on YT.
This is genuinely the best of the historic, restoration, etc channels on TH-cam. Diamond inlaid platinum quality from beginning to end. Bad Obsession is the modification and Harry's Garage the classic car review equivalents The rest, whilst well worth watching are also rans.

Stunning looking Dino , the interior is just gorgeous. I also look forward to the bit when you give it the beans at the end of the videos , these older classics sound way better than any of the modern stuff 👍🏻
What Iain doesn't know about cars of this era could be written on the back of a postage stamp. Just wonderful knowledge and presented beautifully. One of the few You Tube channels I have with notifications turned on.
This is the only channel I subscribe to that I can hit the like button before I even watch an episode. The filming is first rate, the commentary is seamless, the knowledge is deep. This feels like a television program with a high production budget. It's better than pretty much anything on the Motortrend channel. Iain should be on the short list for knighthood.
Presented as beautifully as the car with just the right amount of technical input to make it thoroughly interesting and educational. Listening with screwdrivers and tubes to the ear - class. Dear Mr. Busby, Just start with a classic that you can afford - not the cheapest one, but the best example that fits within your budget. Then work your way up the ladder by trading, adding history and sympathetic preservation, taking great photos...and don't blow your money on depreciating new cars. It's worked for us for over 30 years.
There's not much like this channel out there. Mr. Tyrrell clearly knows his business. Provides access to all the details of the most interesting cars that are lucky enough to find their way to his shop and is kind enough to share his knowledge. There are a lot of other good car channels out there, but this one is probably the best. Great cars, a knowledgeable guest and a clean shop, that's the recipe right there. Thank you kindly.
Iain diagnoses tappet clearances but listening to a screwdriver placed against the head of a Ferrari engine, and tunes the carbs on a DB5 with a piece of garden hose. This is the man you want working on your car! It must just take a staggering amount of knowledge and experience, mind blowing.
I'm saying it again. This is one of the best car channels out there. It is a joy to watch. You can tell a genuine car enthusiast by the smile when listening to the engine at the end... Please keep filming...!!

I built a plastic model of this car 40 years ago. Always wanted one. I’m afraid that dream will never happen because they are through the roof $$. At least I found this channel to dream again. Thank you!!
Another of my all time favourite cars. Also the first Ferrari I worked on in '76 when I started working for a Ferrari/Mercedes/Porsche main delaer in Essex. It, too was a black GTS. Brilliant stuff.
What a great video. I loved the way you explained the process of changing the tappet shim. And that sound, bliss. A red 1969 246 Dino Gt was my first “supercar” experience as a 15yr old in 1972. It felt like a rocket ship then!
I recall my father ( now almost 90) using the screwdriver and ear trick on many of the performance and classics that came into his garage back in the day. As a youngster it fascinated me- probably why i love Ians' videos so much.
Added to the Watch Later list, waited till Saturday morning, got some good coffee, then watched the video, just because this is the best escapism there is on You Tube for a petrol head. The fun facts, the fixing, the amazing looking Dino, and the drive at the end, great way to spend 20 mins.
it's been a hell of week here in the states . . . . . senses are oh so overloaded & so much to feel responsible for. but sensitivity to the feelings & alterations of this mechanical object seemed to melt away my current configurations. good job on the car, good job on the drive & a good job all around on me. thanks for this.
An engineer acquaintance took me for a drive in his 246 in the year 2000. It is not a fast car, especially by today’s standards, but it is breathtakingly beautiful and truly thrilling to ride in. When I see one on the road today, I know I am seeing a true automotive enthusiast.

So wonderfully old school, just listening to the engine to diagnose an issue. I used to own a 1976 Alfa Spyder with twin Weber carburettors, my mechanic just listened to them and tuned them with a screwdriver to perfection, like watching a master piano tuner...great video!

Such an icon, I remember when nobody wanted the "slow V6 ferrari" . Always loved them since I watched Tony Curtis drive one in The Persuaders as a little kid . A friend of mine owned a bodyshop and he had a customer Dino in their for a bare metal respray in Giallo Fly complete with corroded cromadora wheels , no idea if that was the original factory colour or not , the customer paid £ 70,000 for it in 2001 and he thought he had been ripped off !! . One of the bodyshop "Old boys" demonstrated to me how lead loading was done on one of the wings as they all were from factory , just mesmerising to watch . Many thanks Iain another belter sir . 👍👍👏👏

Cheap? The list price was £5485 in 1973. That's £67 grand in today's money.

YES YES YES!! Cant get enough if this. Shim under buckets are no fun to adjust. My old Kawasaki's are that way.
Yes I had a Z550 about 1981. Pain to remove buckets every time.

Iain diagnoses tappet clearances but listening to a screwdriver placed against the head of a Ferrari engine, and tunes the carbs on a DB5 with a piece of garden hose. This is the man you want working on your car! It must just take a staggering amount of knowledge and experience, mind blowing.

I built a plastic model of this car 40 years ago. Always wanted one. I’m afraid that dream will never happen because they are through the roof $$. At least I found this channel to dream again. Thank you!!

Another of my all time favourite cars. Also the first Ferrari I worked on in '76 when I started working for a Ferrari/Mercedes/Porsche main delaer in Essex. It, too was a black GTS. Brilliant stuff.
A calibrated ear and the ability to tune a car in a polo without getting dirty. This isn't mechanics. this is art.

A red 1969 246 Dino Gt was my first “supercar” experience as a 15yr old in 1972. It felt like a rocket ship then!

I recall my father ( now almost 90) using the screwdriver and ear trick on many of the performance and classics that came into his garage back in the day. As a youngster it fascinated me- probably why i love Ians' videos so much.

An engineer acquaintance took me for a drive in his 246 in the year 2000. It is not a fast car, especially by today’s standards, but it is breathtakingly beautiful and truly thrilling to ride in. When I see one on the road today, I know I am seeing a true automotive enthusiast.

So wonderfully old school, just listening to the engine to diagnose an issue. I used to own a 1976 Alfa Spyder with twin Weber carburettors, my mechanic just listened to them and tuned them with a screwdriver to perfection, like watching a master piano tuner...great video!

Great Video of a Great car. I scored a '74 GTS for $12,000 AUD all orig. Best investment it has been together with the joy of ownership. Classic design that has stood the test of time
Such an icon, I remember when nobody wanted the "slow V6 ferrari" . Always loved them since I watched Tony Curtis drive one in The Persuaders as a little kid . A friend of mine owned a bodyshop and he had a customer Dino in their for a bare metal respray in Giallo Fly complete with corroded cromadora wheels , no idea if that was the original factory colour or not , the customer paid £ 70,000 for it in 2001 and he thought he had been ripped off !! . One of the bodyshop "Old boys" demonstrated to me how lead loading was done on one of the wings as they all were from factory , just mesmerising to watch . Many thanks Iain another belter sir . 👍👍👏👏
