      b175 great hooks, and can be made absolutely nutty sharp with a jag file, will make modern hooks wince they can become that sharp, just wish they did them in black back in the day, or teflon now adays, i now use some ebay lonshanks due to the teflon, but still nothing can match the b175 for a sharpend hook, cheers

    • @MarkCarp
      @MarkCarp  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      funnily enough there is a jag hook sharpening vice and file in my tackle box just for touching them up lazy👍 the Teflon doesn't bother me, i remember turning over capesthorne hall on these hooks, it was gin clear and they were some of the most pressured fish in the region, does it make a difference?, my experience says not?👍🎣

      you're welcome Cameron, nobody mentions tuning the rig in the uk either, our carp over here are under a lot of angling pressure and the fish suffer mouth damage if the rig isn't set up properly. hopefully this video will help a lot of people, your comments tell me i'm on the right track and I thank you for that👍🎣

    Beautifully demonstrated and explained Mark, I have to concur on the efficiency of the rig, a quick check of the diaries revealed I 1st started using it in 1985 and in the period from 2007 - present day I have lost a total of 9 carp and during the period of 2007 - 2016 when a gang of 4 of us used to travel the country on days out, if I had 10 runs I hooked and landed 10 fish, compared to the group (that used different rigs) average of 8 out of 10, I still use it today for 99% of my fishing and certainly haven't found any other rig that's as efficient.

    • @MarkCarp
      @MarkCarp  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      excellent andy, your stats are very similar to mine then, I sometimes have a change but I always end up going back to the same rig because its so efficient, the old ways always seem to be the best👍🎣

    I’m with you on this one Mark, simple is best. I’ve come back to carp fishing after 25 yrs and was amazed how complicated things had got. However using a simple rig like this, and boom, straight into the fish. No doubt there’s a place for spinners, d’s, kickers and zigs etc but when it comes down to it it’s a hook,rod, line, and a fish. Well put together video cheers.

    • @MarkCarp
      @MarkCarp  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      absolutely agree with you kevin, things have gotten way too complicated, there just seems to be a relentless drive towards ever more complicated rigs and it seems to be much to the tackle companies gain as they just get to flog punters more stuff, but the truth is a simple and efficient rig will catch all day long👍

    • @flashtheoriginal
      @flashtheoriginal 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      And today.....success! Beyond hooking carp, the beauty of this rig is its reliability; I have lost count of how many times i have reeled in to find a ball of tangled line and weed, with the cold realisation that there was never any prospect of a catch and my assumption of all being well under the surface was completely flawed. Today, every cast counted, each reel in revealed a clean line from reel to bait. The bonus tips are essential. I will never return to mono-flourocarbon line for a ledger rig. Complete game changer. Thank you, Mark

    Hi Mark..great video and well explained. Im new to fishing and would like to give this rig a try. I have ordered whats needed however I have gone for a barbless hook but with same spec eye and long shank. I cant find where to buy those net bags or what they are called same for the foam. Any advice on where I can buy them or what to search for? Also will that stringer device just fly off on the cast with a barbless hook?
    Any advice is greatly appreciated 👍

    • @MarkCarp
      @MarkCarp  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      hi john, yes a barbless hook the same spec should be fine, the alternative is to crush the barb with a pair of pliers or forceps. the nets bags are 20mm pva mesh, i like this esp mesh myself - amzn.to/3d0u8Vz
      and the foam is dissolving rig foam, the gardner tackle version is good - amzn.to/37FaFc5
      neither will fly off on the cast because your hook is barbless👍

    I'm thinking of giving this a go. How far would you feel comfortable casting this soft braid rig out? Even with the stringer and foam nugget, is there a distance limit where tangles start to happen?

    • @MarkCarp
      @MarkCarp  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      thanks haba, you can get tangles any time but the stringer and foam nugget take care of most of them, up to 60, maybe 70 yards i've found it ok, you just need to be smooth with your casting and watch the rig in the air, trap your line and feel the lead down for the donk and it should be good. for very long range i switch to esp tungsten loaded and a helicopter rig, when you really have to 'hammer it', that's when i've have the most problems with braid and tangles. the rig is great mate, it's well worth using👍

    • @MarkCarp
      @MarkCarp  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      hi mate, i use the 20lb sink link for this rig, it works really well. i tend to prefer 15lb main line, you can get away with 12lb or even 10lb for smaller carp in open water but its best have plenty in reserve, if you're going to sit there for ages waiting for a bite the last thing you want is to lose it because your line wasn't up to the job so my advice is 15lb breaking strain👍

    Hi Mark. What is your opinion on using shiny hooks for carp? I have lots of normal "silver" Mustad bait hooks with the two barbs on the shank of the hook. Can these hooks be successfully used in carp fishing with a hair rig tied to it? Cheers from South Africa!

    • @MarkCarp
      @MarkCarp  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      hi renier, i personally wouldn't use a hook with 2 barbs for carp fishing, over here in the uk that would be viewed as unacceptable due to the potential damage to the carps mouth. regarding shiny hooks, these kamasans are gold in colour, they don't come any shinier. i've used these hooks to catch very old and wiley carp that have been subject to intense angling pressure for many years and the hooks worked perfectly, i don't believe the colour of the hook makes any difference👍

    Hello mark,do you sharpen the B175 hooks???

    • @MarkCarp
      @MarkCarp  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hi simon, I use them as they are straight out of the packet. I also keep an eye on the hook point and I check it religiously every time I cast out just to make sure it's 'sticky sharp', if it's not then I touch it up using a jag file/vice👍 the hook has a protective coating on it so it won't rust but once you file it, the coating is removed and you'll find the next session out the point has rusted and the rig needs changing. So I sharpen when I think the hook has lost it's 'stickiness' and I bin it at the end of that session. I do this for any/all hooks not just the b175, provided they keep their sharpness i'm happy to carry on using them until they've been touched up👍

      fluorocarbon for main line franz?, i don't bother myself, i'm happy with plain mono, at the moment i have gardner pro light blend in 15lb and gardner hydrotuff in 12lb on my two sets of reels. fluoro sinks well but the trade off is it's lousy for casting and it costs more, most mono's sink anyway so why bother spending extra on fluoro👍

    Hi Mark, I followed your Carp Rig with interest, I usually use wide gape carp hooks, but because they are wide gape I only use size 8, so I thought I had better order some Size 8 Kamasan. got the hooks, made the rig went to the lake. Now my lake has Mirror Carp to 15lbs and they fight like hell, they think they are 30 pounders, so a bit apprehensive using a new rig, but no problem, hooked into a Carp, even landed it, but the punch line......the hook was almost straight ! So I have now ordered some size 8's. I seem to recall you did say that the 8's were the ones to get? I will now have enough hooks for years, 49 actually. I follow your live streams with interest mate

    • @MarkCarp
      @MarkCarp  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wish you'd asked about the hook sizes before you ordered mr fd, 8's aren't strong enough for a b175, if you continue to use them play your fish very very carefully, personally I don't use smaller than a size 6 in this pattern, they aren't wide gapes and the hook wire is thinner so you can't judge them size for size😉
