Though there have been many great renditions of the Star Spangled Banner, including Lady Gaga’s, Renee Fleming’s, and Jennifer Hudson's, this is considered by many Americans as the greatest rendition of the Star Spangled Banner
My Dad was deployed during this time. My mom bought the cassette of this performance and we listened to it so many times. It brought me to tears then and it still does to this day ❤️
As a 70 yr old women. Whitney is my all time favorite artist. She is perfection. To watch your analysis and appreciation of MY National anthem done by the LATE GREAT Whitney Houston brought tears to my eyes. I can see in your face the same feeling i get whenever i hear the incomparable Ms Houston. Thank you for this.
This is widely considered the greatest rendition of the US national anthem ever. Credit should also go to John Clayton for his amazing musical arrangement on this version.
This is simply the greatest version ever of TSSB. When Houston arrived in Miami to record it, her musical director, Rickey Minor, excitedly asked her if she had listened to the changed arrangement. She hadn't because Houston was busy rehearsing in L.A. for "The Bodyguard." Houston told Minor, "don't worry baby, just put it on." She listened with her eyes closed, and at the conclusion, she said "I got it." Keep in mind this was just a week before the Super Bowl, and given the war had just started, the broadcast was expected to have the biggest word-wide audience ever. The version here known to all the world is 90% from that very first attempt. She was a vocal genius. I don't intend any disrespect to today's artists, but Houston towers above them all. She is one of the greatest voices of all time irrespective of musical genre.
In addition to the performance itself, the decision-making as a performer is just incredible. Where to be straight-forward, where to add little flourishes, she always does just the right amount. She adds just enough flair to make it a one-of-a-kind performance while staying true to the spirit of the song. She meets the moment of an internationally televised sporting event spectacle and exceeds the pressure to create something truly magical.
I'm a former US Army soldier. When I saw this song as an 8 year old it gave me goosebumps. Today it makes me want to be an American, twice. Thank you Beth😃
Ms Houston is using her voice to recreate the feeling of the historical event she is singing about in the national anthem. For example when she sings "the bombs bursting in air" her voice explodes like bombs bursting in the air.
I watched this performance 'live' - Whitney sang this from the very depth of her soul. Her singing ability has yet to be matched or surpassed - she's unique. Thank you for playing our National Anthem. ❤️ 🇺🇸 ❤️ Much appreciated!
This is the best version. My violin teacher was actually one of the performers in the orchestra behind her. Fun fact- none of it was live. Although they were all playing and she was singing, it was all prerecorded ! Love how no one knows. Still the best national anthem by far
Oh but she pre sung it though ,her own voice.. And guess what none of Whitney's recordings did her justice. Check out her live versions of her songs. This woman had a God given anointed , powerful, beautiful voice. Whitney never needed studio.
I am an American Veteran of this time period. This is singularly the greatest rendition of the our National Anthem IMHO. Lee Greenwood's God Bless the USA was played at my Boot camp graduation. Would love to see your reaction.
Whitney's voice paired with this arrangement will never be surpassed. 30 years later, people are still watching. This performance set the bar impossibly high for everyone who came after her. 🇺🇸
With its range and extremes of highs and lows, the *_'Star Spangled Banner'_* is considered by many musicians and vocalists (regardless of their genre) to be arguably the absolute hardest and most challenging songs in the world. Whitney... what a sad & tragic loss. RIP *_R_*
This is my all time favorite rendition of our national anthem. I share it every July 4th. Whitney Houston was one of a kind. Thank you for sharing your insights on her vocal performance.
Absolutely NUTS! And you really spelled it out, @Beth Roars. Cheers from California. And Whitney nailed this, and The Battle Hymn of the Republic. Love you, Whitney.
To this day, I don’t think anyone has performed Our National Anthem 🇺🇸 better. She was having fun doing it, and showcased her amazing talent. We lost her far too soon. ❤️
I remember this like it was yesterday. It was extremely emotional for most Americans because we were in the middle of the first Gulf War and it had been since Vietnam that we had so many troops deployed for a war. The air campaign had started but the ground war was still about 3 weeks away. I know there wasn't a dry eye in our house when she finished singing.
Elusive. Illusive. Gorgeous rendition, through and through. I can't help but swell in the eyes when I come back to listen to this musical direction of our national anthem.
There will NEVER be a better rendition of this song. The best part is it seems like she was having a good time and it's just so effortless. Such a shame she's gone, but we will always have her music.
Every time I hear our National Anthem I get goosebumps & have since I was a kid but Whitney took it to a whole different level! The BEST rendition ever!! Rest in peace Whitney
I can sum it up this way: it's the perfect combination of an incredible female artist, an awesome musical arrangement and brilliant camera work - that's it in a nutshell!
This will always be my personal favorite of our National Anthem...but I have an emotional attachment just as many veterans from this time period do. I was in the Desert at the time and we listened to this and part of the game on the radio; didn't see the actual video broadcast until I returned to the U.S. in March '91. Here we are, 30 years later, still breathtaking. Rest In Peace Whitney, and thank you.
You must remember that Whitney grew up on gospel music in the Black church She sang on the choir and go all the solos!!! LoL We come from a rich musical history. We hear some of stylings in church from toddlers so it doesn't sound "extra" like it might for those who are used to more... standard kind of singing lol
Miss her voice. She was an American treasure… was I the only non American who stood up at attention after 5 seconds… with my right hand over my heart…. Truly miss her passion.
You explain this rendition, in away that a untrained person never noticed. I just know that it always send chills through me. And I feel so patriotic and proud to be a born, bread and butter American🙏🏾
I LOVED your interpretation! As a Whitney fan, your description allowed more insight & reasoning as to why her voice & performance are gold. Thank you 🍀
This…I was just barely old enough to be terrified that we were “at war”. This performance embodied everything that at the time “we” believed in. The way this brought all of us together, the understated look and the effortless way she reassured a 9 year old child….Iconic, simply iconic. RIP
As soon as I wake up I get a cup of coffee and then... Beth's notification.... How is possible not to have a good day after this!!!! ¡PURA VIDA! From the other side of the planet.
That was a spectacular live version. What a voice. It gives me chills every time. I would say that it is the best and most powerful version of The Star Spangled Banner ever performed. And she also changed the rhythm from the original one based on a 3 count, to a 4/4 rhythm. Utterly astounding.
Beth explains clearly why this version is the best. Why we are astounded by Whitney's techniques and styling. No one, no one, sang this better than Whitney Houston. Thank you Beth; thank you Whitney.
As a proud American, even in one of our more divided time in history, this is the best rendition of our National Anthem. However, the poster as a vocal coach sounds amazing as well.
I am American and I still remember watching it live in my livingroom (that's right, she sang it in my livingroom lol)! My jaw hit the floor with about a hundred million other people that day! Omg!!
Apart from Whitney’s singing, which was truly outstanding, what also made this version unique and special was changing the song from 3/4 time to 4/4 (2/2?), which imho suits the anthem much better.
I think y I love Whitney's rendition the most is because she killed it without using too many riffs and runs. The purity of her vocals just shone clearly through out. Many people tend to sing it with too many riffs and runs. It takes away from the impact of the song's meaning.
This is my favorite rendition of our National Anthem in America! 🇺🇸 Whitney!!! I cry every time 😩 She’s in my top three female vocalists - Whitney Houston, Tina Turner, & Stevie Nicks! 💗💗 Thank you for your expertise!

In my opinion, this is definitely the best version of the Star Spangled Banner I've ever heard/seen due to Whitney's phenomenal vocal performance, the amazing musical arrangement and the vibe in the stadium because it was just after the start of the first Gulf war. Despite seeing this performance several times, I'm always an emotional wreck by the end.
Best version ever. Hands down. This version got onto Billboard after this performance and after 9/11. She almost wasn't allowed to play this arrangement because it's slightly different than the original. There is no tension in that neck and voice. It makes me proud to be an American. We would rather die on our feet than live on our knees. God bless America! 🇺🇸❤
As an American, I don’t take offense. She’s just amazing and should be celebrated. No one will ever sing the anthem better than her. I miss her so much.🇺🇸💗
