I've been traveling with just a 16 liter backpack for years. I only take two outfits plus what I'm wearing and a swimsuit and just plan on rinsing my clothes in the sink each night. It makes it so much easier to get around once I get to my destination. I don't have to check in anywhere before exploring because my pack is so light.
I have been doing the same. One to wear, one in the wash and one to spare. The problem sometimes for me is where to dry my clothes as many hostels don't have this kind of facilities. How do you dry your clothes while travelling?
@@pogoarora7202 I wash everything in the sink unless I am lucky enough to have access to a washer. I roll them up in a towel and stomp on it to get out excess moisture, then hang them from any place I can find - a chair, a headboard, a ceiling fan, a shower rod, over a lamp (that is not turned on), a curtain rod, over the top of a door (usually put a towel over the door first, because doors can be really dusty/dirty), a hammock, a towel hook, etc. I used to travel with foldable hangers to make this easier, but didn't like how much space they took up. I have also traveled with a clothesline, but always had trouble finding two good anchor spots, so stopped doing that. They can also be dried flat on a towel on the bed, but that takes longer to dry. I don't use a dryer at home, so have never used one when I travel.
Great vid, gonna switch to this bag soon, it is actually small enough to be a personal item. This means flying even cheaper, because with more and more budget airlines, only a personal item is allowed for free. What I do is I made a travel pillow case that I can stuff with my bulkiest clothing items and wear it around my neck when I board. This way the bag is small enough to take as a personal item, you can put in under the seat.
I'm impressed at how much you manage to fit into that bag! We have been on the road since late 2019 with carry on only and we love using packing cubes, but the compression sack looks pretty handy. Might have to consider that the next time we're due for an upgrade!
I’m with you Me personally I really focused myself on minimalist living Took me about 3 months to adjust but my next 10 year trip starting next year I plan on just a 20l backpack
I did! (1 carry on & 1 purse for personal stuff like make-up & skin care in a small package) Not a long term travel yet! I hate waiting for luggage👎 BUT I love to get out right away in the airport, the advantage of carry on😁 did share this vblog to the minimalist group😊
I have been hemming and hawing over the perfect bag all day. r/onebag digging, articles, etc. You just sealed the deal for me. Getting my man friend a merino shirt too. Thanks so much!
I'm going to travel very soon and I'll try with only one backpack. I already bought this model and everything fits perfectly, even a mechanic keyboard for my laptop. Thanks a lot for doing these videos :D
Love that video. I feel like a space waster with my Porter 46L. Really love that bag although I am considering downsizing a bit to get those juicy 7kg in South East Asia.
I loved your video .I pack more when I go away for a weekend ……I use space saver bags travelling overseas my problem is usually packing too many shoes and presents for the family .I think it’s amazing when you can travel light .👍🇦🇺
Kevin, I STILL refer to this video for minimalist packing tips. Thank you so much for it. I was wondering - do you know, specifically, what type of Bluffworks pants you have? By any chance, was it the Ascender Chino? It seems like it, from the way you describe it, but wanted to check with you. Thanks again for your videos.
They weren't called that back when I got them but I just checked the website and they are the same. 2 years later, those pants look like I just bought them. Great, quality stuff.
I just used your vanlife code and it worked. Trying some items for upcoming trip, first merino wool items for me. I like the sweater, I'll order next. Great vid. Thx.
Merino wool is the best. it was really nice of them to let you get away with 16KG, I have managed to get all my stuff down to 5KG without a macbook air. Some of the budget airlines will allow you to take out your laptop before weighing since electronics are often not counted as clothing. I also dont travel with a G7X which cuts down on weight since I dont have to bring extra lenses.
I really liked this video! I'm going on a six week, maybe longer trip to Eastern Europe summer of 2022. Searching for a bag to carry on I found the Osprey Porter series bags. I already own 4 Osprey backpacks and so knew they made good stuff. I bought the 46liter Porter since it was touted as being small enough to be a "carry on". Cinched up it is only slightly larger than a standard roll around carry on I've had a long time and just used last July. I may take more "luxury gear" than you, e.g a Henry Shires Half Rainbow silnylon tarptent(2lbs). It packs very small. Even weirder is I own a Sony a6600 and originally planned to take it with a 16-105mm. But not having seen this video, I decided to do what you are planning and buy a Sony RX100 mark VII!! LOL for the same reasons. It is waterproof, a big deal for me as I will be doing some hiking and camping. It shoots 4k and has RAW+jpg blah blah. WAY smaller and lighter, and easier to use for quick shots, etc. I also have had 3 Sea to Summit compression bags for years. I agree, they are GOOD stuff. I think I'm good for clothes except I need to get the merino wool shirts and maybe 2 pairs of merino underwear. I've had ExOfficio boxers for years for backpacking. I may add some cooler weather clothes since I plan to go up into the Carpathian mountain area to hike and/or backpack. I feel a LOT better about my choices having seen your video!! THx pete
Excellent setup! I also travel carry on only with a 34 litre Osprey Nebula, don't have all the camera gear, only my cellphone. Most of it is clothes and can usually keep the weight down to 6-7kgs. You don't have any toiletries?
Awesome. I just flew for the first time carry on only from Sarajevo to Budapest. I have been looking for a new pack for a while (I am on my third). I was looking at a 50 liter but it now see I can get everything in that 30, I will start my search anew.
i'm probably not doing something right, I have a Porter 46 which is much larger than yours and it still expands way too much when I pack it. I use compression packing cubes though and I like your idea of using a sack. I still need to work on optimizing space.
Great video! I did 3 months in Europe with a 45L black diamond. Just bought a porter 30 and am waiting for it to be delivered! Planning on using it for all future travel, be it a weekend at the cottage or another few months over seas.
Hey buddy! You are awesome! This is some gangsta packing. I think I will use several of these tips. As always your fan recognizes your greatest! Take care.
I just found this video, I’ve watched your video with your nomatic bag. So what do you prefer after having both, Osprey Porter 30 or Nomatic Travel Pack? I’m inspired to travel with one bag like you.
I just watched this packing video...2 Qs....w.other than flip flops u carry..what other shoes do U take..and I assume U wear them...2Q. ... where R your toiletries...toothbrush, paste, deoderant..OR do u buy items in each place U move to...?? Bravo..
WAIT....I saw a reply on the hiking gear... I dont take all the electronics..I'm not as tech savy..my done works great for all my needs...ha..I take bike trips...so I take 1 small carryone, and one small backpack...it works for me...
I have a pair of black tennis shoes. Those can be used to hike, run and since they are black..i pair them with a pair of jeans and a long sleeve black shirt and I can get into any night club. The only toiletries I carry is a tooth brush and deodorant. Since I stay in a country for 30 days at a time...I buy body wash and a tube of tooth paste when I get there. I shave my head...so I don't need a whole lot of toiletries :)
Hay man do you still rec the porter 30 for a place like south east asia? im not planning many regional flights just international flights in and out of bangkok
Thank you for such a helpful video! I'm torn between this backpack and patagonia Paxat 32L which claims to be a bit larger, but who knows if that's actually true. Nice tip in the comments about renting hiking shoes at the destination. I've never thought about that.
I dont carry a medical kit but I should probably! I carry a beard trimmer and usually buy a disposable razor to shave my head in each place. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I don't understand why you have so many shorts and shirts. And the other thing I don't understand is, why people use additional covers for the MacBook. I mean, this thing is made from aluminum and pretty sturdy. Which realistic protection will you get from the cover?
After 130 countries over 35 years, traveling light and compact is the way to go. I use a tom bihn 25L, and an 8L sling. Not a fan of merino wool, it did not last, ripped easily, and felt itchy. I use lightweight underwear from Walmart- dries overnight. Underarmour shirts with collar- look nice, no wrinkles, dry overnight. I also prefer a lightweight compact umbrella- every rain jacket makes you sweat- easy to deploy for rain showers. The tips in the video are excellent. Its amazing how much crap most travellers carry.
@@30AndAWakeUp I honestly do not remember the brand. I have met many travellers that love merino. I hand wash my shirt, underwear and socks daily in a few minutes, wring dry, roll in a towel to wick moisture, hang to dry...any suggestion on quick dry socks?
How do you get by with the 3 Socks and 4 boxers? Love the set up, I use a GORUCK GR1 26L and a Nomatic Vacuum compression sack for 8 day work trips, and that works well but I don't have room for a lap top or anything like that so I was thinking of switching to something a little larger, like the Porter.
Yeah, I forgot to talk about toiletries. I only pack a toothbrush. Since I stay in most places at least 30 days or longer, I just buy toiletries when I get there. That stuff is pretty inexpensive in most of the world.
I liked your videos. How about you use ipad pro as an editor machine and replace the camera you use with sony cybershot point and shot camera. I think it is good enough for vlogging and it is very small too!
Impressive! The compression sac seems good for the long-term travel you are doing and unpacking each location. Would the cubes be better for shorter stays? Also, unrelated to this video, at the end of the year could you add up all the expenses not included (food, extra travel, etc)? Safe travels!
Yeah, I think the cubes are probably better for shorter stays. They are good for organizing stuff...the compression sack is good for giving you more space.
Yeah, I will do that. Also, when I start traveling solo -- I plan on doing a monthly expense report. I travel with Remote Year now...so it's hard to get a good idea what the "real" cost is.
Yeah, I forgot to talk about toiletries. The only thing I bring with me is a toothbrush. Since I stay in a place for at least 30 days, I just but the stuff there. Most of that stuff is inexpensive throughout most of the world. As far as cords, I have an iPhone and Ipad set up I use now. Both use the same type of USB-C cord. So only one cord.
Hey! First of all if really liked your videos and recommendations for gear! I would definitely buy Merino clothing and try it out. I have a question about the Porter 30 backpack, do you think I could get it in a plane as a personal item (9 inches x 10 inches x 17) besides my carry on, if it is under packed and fully compresed? In the web site I guess the dimensions are for a regularly packed back. Thanks!
The only toiletries I carry is a toothbrush and deodorant. Since I stay at a place around 30 days I just buy a months supply in the country I am in. Ivan there is a great Canadian company that I use called Unbound Merino. Their shirts are between $50-60 depending on how many you buy. I also have a deal with them - when you go to check out, use the code 30ANDAWAKEUP and you'll get 10% off.
I am a Carry On only guy as well but man you are impressive! I have the Osprey Farpoint 40l backpack and it is absolutely excellent, and I strive to be more minimal but I think 40l is the lightest I can go. I’ll see about getting a compression sack soon
30 And A Wake Up Best Backpack I’ve ever owned and it is in like new condition even though I’ve taken it everywhere over the last 5 years. I’ve been interested in the Eagle Creek Switchback Bag as of late because it has wheels yet you can also wear it as a backpack and that’s not it, it also has a daypack. The only issue is that it is International Carry On compliant meaning it’s smaller than my Farpoint, but I have to find something that is “convertible” meaning can be a roller or backpack depending on my needs. Love the videos buddy, keep it up! I think I could pack less but I would lose some fun items like my JBL Bluetooth speaker which came in handy many times
I have Osprey 46. Love it. So far I’ve never had to check it in while traveling in US or to Mexico. I am interested in learning how to pack it better. Thanks for the video
I've been denied carry on with the 30 liter on a lot of airlines in Europe and in Asia. Actually went down to a 20 liter that expands to a 30 liter so I can get it under the seat.
My porter 46 met the dimensions of a carry on in South East Asia when not overpacked, but the moment they weighed it...it was like nope...sorry too heavy you need to check it. So it’s not just the volume/dimensions they look at.
@@30AndAWakeUp I'll look out for that one. I've already bookmarked this one both because your setup makes such sense and because you explain it so well. (I think one reason your videos are so good is that, although your presentation is so warm, you also have the organizational chops from your military background so you know how to make things understandable to others.)
I pack extremely light, too, so I love seeing this. One thing I noticed, though, you didn’t mention toiletries. What do you do about them, just buy when you arrive?
I stay in a location for at least 30 days - so I just buy when I get there. (I do carry a toothbrush)....and so cool. Im thinking about doing that one as well! :)
Hi, Thanks for your videos that I found very interesting as a guy in his 40's who consider adopting a nomad lifestyle soon. I even consider joining remote year as a starting point. But I have a specific question linked to that video. I've seen that you did some serious hiking, especially in Latin America (Machu Pichu, Patagonia, etc.). How have you managed to do this with your rather urban-oriented stuff? What about the shoes, no hiking boots? Kind Regards!
Couple things...the pants (bluff works) are great for hiking and the merino wool shirts I use are also perfect for hiking. I hiked Machu Picchu with just the black tennis shoes you see in the vid. For Patagonia I rented hiking boots. In most places with serious hiking...you'll be able to rent gear pretty cheap.
haha...yeah I need to ditch the jeans! But I love them!! I just left Kyoto! My vids are about a month behind. I'm jealous - enjoy the place. It is sooo amazing!
@@30AndAWakeUp been there a few times already. As I get older I tend to go back to the places I love the most. I no longer seek sights, seen too many museums, temples, cathedrals. Now I just want good food 😁 ...said the future fat man.
This was a great video. I've traveled quite a bit and like minimal packing ideas. I traveled with bloodhounds all over the USA so had to pack a lot of gear. I checked out UnboundMerino.com and found they on carry men's clothing. Such is life and travel.
Did you buy your camera yet? As someone who knows camera gear I would recommend the Sony RX100 VA. It's a bit cheaper and much better in low light due to its f1.8 lens. Yes the 6&7 have a 200mm zoom but 90% of people never really use it. The VA is much better in lower light situations in restaurants bars etc. Where is your toiletry bag? I would also recommend a company called YNOT ( Chase Reeves ) recommended it and I love it. It's a Canadian company and the backpack folds up and great when you get to your destination for a smaller carry around bag. Its lightweight and great quality. Cheers from Canada.
I understand not wanting to have to check your bag in to save time and avoid hassle, but its not safe to be carrying more than you're supposed to. They have you check bags in so they know how much weight the plane is carrying to avoid running out of fuel. If everyone cheated it and carried double what they are allowed to there is no telling what sort of trouble that could cause mid flight.
I carry less than most people do in their carry on...and that's my total. So Im definitely lowering the weight they'd normally have from the seat Im occupying it.
I have often wondered the same thing. I wondered why they are Nazis about the 40lb checked bag rule, but don't care how much you weigh as a passenger. I've stood in line behind passengers that have weighed 200lbs more than than me and didnt get charged for their 40lb bag...but I did because mine was 48lbs. Also every passenger is alloted a personal item and some bring one, while others don't. I'm sure they use a general overall average based on how many people are aboard. There's also several other factors used when calculating the burn...so I've come to the conclusion that a few extra pounds in someone's bag (or on someone's belly) must not make that big of difference. The whole bag weight thing is simply to set a baseline to keep overall weight down, and make a few extra bucks if people go over it.
Nice to see that the one year difference already has you so downsized. I took my drone all around the country on my motorcycle, and never got it out even one time. Selfie stick makes a lot more sense.
Do you travel carry on only?
Noway, one time I tried to, but I ended up having two carry on!
Only way I travel! I see so many young people pushing a huge suitcase and wonder who's body they are carting around? 😁

This is wow! My husband could probably do it! What about toiletries?
Since I live in a place 30 days at a time...I just buy what I need for a month when I get there.
Thank you for such a helpful video!
I'm torn between this backpack and patagonia Paxat 32L which claims to be a bit larger, but who knows if that's actually true.
Nice tip in the comments about renting hiking shoes at the destination. I've never thought about that.
Glad it was helpful! Yeah that Paxat is nice.
Great video I’m new to one bag traveling. Do you carry a shaving/toiletry kit and Basic medical kit?
I dont carry a medical kit but I should probably! I carry a beard trimmer and usually buy a disposable razor to shave my head in each place. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I loved your video in Vietnam, I live in Brazil and I have a friend who was born there. Thank you and I'm going to watch this one
Thank you so much! I'm traveling with a friend from Brazil right now!
@@30AndAWakeUp Niceeee. You need to come here too. It's a nice country.
I don't understand why you have so many shorts and shirts.
And the other thing I don't understand is, why people use additional covers for the MacBook. I mean, this thing is made from aluminum and pretty sturdy. Which realistic protection will you get from the cover?
fair points for sure...i end up wearing only like 2 pair of shorts and a couple shirts.
What brand of merino wool? i left with 4 companies...two sucked and two were great.
Yeah the Porter is great! And the secret to the socks and boxers is merino wool!!!
Did you have any toiletries? I feel like I missed them?
I buy them at each stop!
Nice video still educational after 3 years! I'm just wondering how you managed to get that bag for 90USD? I see them everywhere for 180USD. Any idea?
yeah, it was a deal on amazon
I am looking 👀 at the comments and no one has asked about where you store your toiletries? Where is the toothbrush, soap, lotion, shampoo, comb?
Yeah, I forgot to talk about toiletries. I only pack a toothbrush. Since I stay in most places at least 30 days or longer, I just buy toiletries when I get there. That stuff is pretty inexpensive in most of the world.
@@30AndAWakeUp Great video. Thanks for clarifying about the hygiene.
How do you separate your dirty laundry from your clean ones when traveling? Do you use the compression bag for this?
i just use a plastic bag
I liked your videos. How about you use ipad pro as an editor machine and replace the camera you use with sony cybershot point and shot camera. I think it is good enough for vlogging and it is very small too!
I just replaced my camera set up with the Sony Rx100 VII....so Im set!!! I'll check out the ipad pro!
where do you keep a water bottle?
I would hook it to the bag with a carabiner.
@@30AndAWakeUp Just bought a vapur foldable one! Thanks for this review!
What about your toiletry bag? Where's that?
Since I stay in a country a month, I buy toiletries when I get there.
Great video
I travel with one bag also
Very cool. I actually lightened the load down to a 20 liter!
What about toiletries? Nothing in your bag ??? And what are the things you wear when you travel ? No phone ? No cables ?
Yeah, I forgot to talk about toiletries. The only thing I bring with me is a toothbrush. Since I stay in a place for at least 30 days, I just but the stuff there. Most of that stuff is inexpensive throughout most of the world. As far as cords, I have an iPhone and Ipad set up I use now. Both use the same type of USB-C cord. So only one cord.
Where is your toiletries kit?
i buy that stuff on arrival
Thanks!
You might be able to get it in as a personal item but it'll be close....i fill mine up...so I cant.
@@30AndAWakeUp Thanks for the reply! I am looking to buy it as a daily carry, I have a back problem so I need the hip strap.
nice vid dude
Glad you enjoyed it
What about toiletries, socks and underwear?
i have socks and underwear in there...since I stay 30 days at a spot...I just buy toiletries when I get there.
I've never traveled without a shitload of stuff....great info
:)
Great vid!
Thanks Leanne and thanks for watching.
cool vid. are merino wool t-shirts worth the investment? if you live in canada they're about $100 each
also, you didn't mention your toiletries
Thanks! I'm always jealous when I seel the Fairpoint 40! How do you like it?
Thanks! A good friend of mine uses the 46.
No toiletries?
Since i live in a place for 30 days. I but in country.
In a more recent video, you don't mention a camera at all. I'm curious if you just rely on your phone now?
yeah, I just film with my iPhone now
@@30AndAWakeUp Thanks! I'm thinking of doing the same, so nice to hear what's working for others.
Why not use a 40lt bag? It’s still within the Carry on size. Osprey makes a good one.
@@30AndAWakeUp what is the 20 liter bag that you use?
Five pairs of shorts? That's insane.
yah...too many...
does a 17 inch computer fit in there?
yeah
Ok, now I really want that compression sack!
P.s. remember when you had hair?? 😂 I love the bald look
haha.....thank you!!!!!
Great!!!
Thanks for watching and commenting.
This is an excellent video.
Thanks...I love making this kind of video. I need to do another update - Im traveling with even less now!!!
Yeah, I travel with only a toothbrush. Since I stay in places a month, I just buy when I get there.
30 And A Wake Up That makes sense, makes it a lot easier.
why does so much tshirts needed? if merino wool can last for any days
Yeah...I can definitely scale it down.
The video about packing light.
Thank you for watching and commenting, Jose.
No toothbrush, shampoo, lotion, deodorant??? Lol. Love your videos! I'm preparing for UMOJA 2021!!
51 and nomad AF
Only a 30L backpack and you wear jeans?
Kyoto? Maybe we'll run into each other. I'll be there this Monday till Friday...
haha...yeah I need to ditch the jeans!
Not sure it will works for me. I am always cold. I wear jacket, hoodie, long sleeves when temperature goes belove 78.
haha...well the great thing about merino wool is you can lawyer it!
This was a great video. I've traveled quite a bit and like minimal packing ideas. I traveled with bloodhounds all over the USA so had to pack a lot of gear. I checked out UnboundMerino.com and found they on carry men's clothing. Such is life and travel.
Yeah, they definitely need to get some women's stuff!!!
Great video! thanks!
No problem...thanks for watching and commenting JP.
I did get the 7 already. Loving it so far. I'll check out that toiletry bag.
@@30AndAWakeUp ok that's good then. These days I use my new iPhone 11 pro and its wicked good. Cheers.
Some great tips, thanks!

Pretty sure the planes nowadays have scales on them so the pilot knows how much the plane weighs before it takes off
don't you think the Ex-Offico sometimes get a funny smell? maybe it's me. yikes.
yeah, you definitely got to wash time more often
Nice to see that the one year difference already has you so downsized. I took my drone all around the country on my motorcycle, and never got it out even one time. Selfie stick makes a lot more sense.
yeah, and i keep downsizing! :)
No toiletries, eh?
I purchase at the location Im living at.
Toiletries ?
buying when i get there
👍

Did you forget your toothbrush?🤣
Nope
Bag is too big for Ryanair and wizz air
Yeah it is.
You can pack your computer AND your laptop in that canvas bag? No wonder you’re a minimalist you give 1 item 2 names 🤪
;)
