UPDATE: A video with more information regarding the fix will be posted tonight. Sounds like it's going to be relatively good news for guys who have affected trucks!
One reason why I ALWAYS use my parking brake with any car. Auto or manual. Done it for years and NEVER wore out any thing lol. Thanks for the update. I still love my 2022 Frontier!
Update: Further reading through NHTSA documents shows that possibly "1%" of recalled trucks may actually have the defect. That could potentially be around 1,800 trucks with the defect. More coming soon.....
Love this truck in the 2022 SV model a minor inconvenience to set the parking brake every time which is what I do anyways. Cable stretch is minor as well. Nissan will fix the problem not too worried about it. Truck still is amazing.
"If you use the parking brake every single time you're gonna wear it out..." lol I have used the parking brake on my cars all my life and NEVER wore one out. Nor is it a common issue I have heard of over here in Europe.
Too bad for Nissan on this, but I still love my brand new Pro-4X. I always set my parking break each and every single time I park. I've done this with all of my vehicles and never had a problem where the cables needed to be replaced. They would need adjustments every now and again, but never full replacements. I typically drive my vehicles until they're around 400,000 km's or so. I think the trick is to not STAND on your parking brake pedal with all of your weight. There is a sweet spot where you put your p-brake on tight enough that your truck doesn't roll away when parked on a hill, but not so tight that you're damaging your cables over time. Thanks for the video!!
Started driving in 1977, always have and always will use a parking break. Never had to replace anything to do with the parking brake, like wise never had any transmission problems. Also been wearing my seat belt all that time.
I've been driving since 1967 and likewise, always use my parking brake, never had any transmission problems, and been wearing my seat belt all that time. Parking brake cables stretch and manual parking brakes have adjustability designed into them somewhere in the system. I'm not sure electric parking brakes do though.
You just reminded me of something else that I don't like on the 22 Frontier, the parking brake is a foot brake. After all the years of hand brakes they go back to a foot brake.
Sorry baba, I've been using the emergency brake and all my old cars and new cars for 50 years I never had to replace the cable of the emergency brake. Thanks for the info.
Excellent information! I am planning on buying a SV long bed, so now I will definitely wait for the fix AND special order my truck to insure that it has the latest fixes.

Toyota guys brag about how much resale their truck holds. Thats because they make huge profits when they hit you the first time.
I use my parking brake every time I park, with both manual and automatic transmission. Have never worn out parts doing this. If you never use the e brake and then have to use it, that's when you can run into issues.
My Dad is from western Pennsylvania where their are at lot of steep hills. That being said, my dad has always taught me to always set the parking break.
Great info, really appreciate the heads up as I got my frontier in March. I'll definitely be requesting a new parking brake cable with whatever fix they come up with if I'm affected. I'd hardly call this a major inconvenience though, I really love this truck, adding a step to my routine is no big deal.
I 100% use my parking brake every single time I park my 2015 Nissan frontier pro 4x and have never had a problem from the brake cable or have ever had to adjust it.
any time there is a new motor or a new trans change. You should wait to see how good they are before you buy. that means 3or 4 years. i have a 17 frontier sv4x4 4LV6 5spd trans. bullet proof. I love it
I’ve used the emergency brake for parking an automatic or manual transmission for 30 years for the simple reason of keeping tension off that pawl. I cringe when someone parks on an incline then pulls the shifter from park to drive which creates a lot friction and unnecessary wear hence the “clunk” you get from doing that. You should never rest the weight of any vehicle on the transmission alone. Park.. Keep foot on brake and apply emergency/parking brake.
I have the 2019 frontier, but, this guy puts out great info. I really love the SV model, with two exceptions, NO CD PLAYER, AND I DEARLY MISS THE ELECTRIC DRIVER SEAT. I’m still learning the dodads, hiccups, and idiosyncrasies I have verses the truck. Best of luck with you guys and your trucks under this recall. YALL KEEPA ROLLING!!!!

Every time I go in park I kick down the parking break pedal. I watched a car roll down a hill outside my elementary school and I decided that wasn't going to be me when I grew up.
I use the parking brake all the time, its there for a reason. I also, recall or no recall am not trusting a small metal pin to hold a 4200lb vehicle in its place. You can cause more issues with parking brakes by not using them than with using them, especially the top hat style parking brake that the Frontier and many other pickups and suvs use. I've also never seen a parking brake cable stretch or the assembly wear out when regular brake services are done.
I love my 2022 Frontier. Glad I got it before the recall and would do it again. Ill gladly set the parking brake. You should anyway to keep pressure off the transmission.
seems like dealers are trying to sell these trucks. nothing mentioned about stop sale. And how exactly do they determine if your truck is “affected” ? And what exactly is the fix? Pull trans out? Or can this be fixed rather simply?
Sounds like a not to bad fix. Drop off the truck and have the transmission pawl replaced with a new design 🤷🏻♂️ I love the new Frontier. I have a 2010 pro4x and I can’t kill it. It’s lifted and I’ve had it through all the paces. Looking forward to picking up the new version. 🤟🏼
sounds easy... its actually a lot of work. be easier to just swap out trannys and have them fix the old ones back at headquarters. then send it back for the next guy.
I'm glad I still have my 2019, it was recently wrecked, currently in for repairs and I was considering trading for a '22 when it's fixed. Guess not right now... I always use the parking brake. I have never thought it to be a good idea to have the weight of the vehicle resting against the parking pawl, and relying only on that to stop it from rolling.
The only reason you should use your parking brake is when your on an incline. The reason for this is to take all the pressure of the pawl. The proper way to do this is with the brake on, put it in neutral apply the parking brake, release the brake when the little movement is done put in park, that will not put pressure on the pawl. Hope this helps! 😊
Thank you sir for the video I love my king cab frontier awesome truck i hate just buying a new truck and having a recall i had a 2018 tacoma this frontier blows the tacoma away more power smoother trans rides and drives better still would rather have my friontier
my co workers new 22 Tacoma just got towed because of a fuel pump recall, it wouldnt start. Then it got towed for another recall of the rear diff leaking and destroyed his diff.
Still love my 2021 Titan Pro4x, guess I'll just use the foot break. Hey at least Nissan doing the right thing when I had a 2011 Ford Explorer I was one of the 1st people in the country to tell Ford that there's a problem with the steering. Ford blew me off and my family barely avoided a deadly accident. Took Ford about 5 or 6 years to address it. Heck with Ford.
My question is, I’m going to have that Pawl replaced on my truck, but they tell me they want to reprogram my transmission when they replace that. Pawl I don’t want him to do anything as far as program in my transmission. What’s your thoughts?
Like you, I just bought a '22 Frontier in June. I usually set the brake anyways but this is going to be pain to get fixed if they can't provide a loaner.
As a guy who learned on manual transmission I've always set the parking brake every time on every automatic I've owned, just need to adjust the cable every 100,000 miles or so. Regardless, doesn't make this problem okay
I was raised using parking brake in the foothills of Virginia. Moved to South Florida, flat as a pancake, driving vans at work. Nobody uses them. I always did. So, everybody driving around with the parking brake still engaged where I had driven and parked it. 😂
There are Frontiers on the lot unaffected by the recall. Just call a dealer and ask. I have been interested in a Frontier and when calling dealerships, they have checked inventory and told me of some that are unaffected.
You should always use your emergency brake. I’ve had vehicles with 300,000 and 400,000 km on them and emergency brake being used every day. It’s just fine, they can be adjusted and worst case scenario a cable is much cheaper than a transmission pin.
Do the newer Frontier Trucks still have the super finicky MAF sensor? I have had 3 between 2007 and 2015 year models. They all seem to run into that issue quite early, in dusty areas.
Open the mailbox three days ago and pulled out a recall notice on the 2020 Nissan frontier and figured it had to either be the new transmission or the new engine. Nothing else has changed on this truck since 2006 except for minor stuff. I will opt to use my parking brake when I park because I don’t want them touching my new truck.
I used to own a 2009 Frontier with the hand brake and used it all the time, it became a habit. I now own a 2022 SV and hardly ever use the foot parking brake since it just isn’t as convenient.
According to that report you have in your hands, only .03% of the 180,000 trucks sold has this issue. That’s 54 vehicles or so. I’d be curious what other manufacturers hv done in the past with similar pawl issues? Did they replace the piece or the entire tranny? I would think it would be easier to replace the entire (rebuilt/new)tranny as opposed to tearing into the transmission, which is even more work? I don’t think most newer techs would even know how to repair a transmission. Probably easier just to replace?? 🤷♂️🤔 Either way, not a huge deal, but it does eventually need fixing/replacing.
Nope. The official documentation says absolutely nothing about numbers of affected vehicles. It says, and I quote, "Frontier vehicles produced between June 10, 2020 and June 14, 2022". There is nothing that indicates the number of vehicles with the issue, and it only shows the number of vehicles under the recall which is what I mentioned in the video. Hopefully we'll discover later that not all Frontiers could have the issue, but as of right now we don't know that.
@@4-LOW If u belong to Club Frontier forum, there is a recall document/report that was sent to dealerships indicating those numbers. But agree, too early to tell how many and if there is a way to physically tell without ripping into the tranny ?? I’m sure they will go by batch numbers.

My 2018 never had one problem. So real world experience and Nissan reputation was all I needed to buy another one.
I just got my recall In the mail. Has anyone had this work completed? The dealership said they need my Titan for a day but I really don’t want them pulling it apart. I’ve had issues at the dealership in the past.
Working on a fix, ie. crunching numbers six ways til Sunday to figure out how they don’t lose their as$e$ over this. Cost first, safety second. That includes anticipated lawsuits over potential crashes as a result of the defect. Thanks for the info.
No, use the parking brake unless on flat surface parking lot, even with auto. Not using it will cause it to seize and not work properly when needed…using it is better. Video could have been 2 min.
... loved my '19 Frontier , PLEASE Nissan sell the Pro4x in king cab here in the U.S. why should Canada have all the fun - til then I'll keep my '21 NV 2500 ...
Not nissans fault. They sourced the trans from jacko. But they will get sorted. I have a 22 pro4X in baja and love it. Zero issues with 10,000 miles. It affects very little trucks. Do t hesitate to get one. Fantastic truck
Off topic, what do you think about the standard headlights? I want a new Frontier with the 6’ bed and CC but they are super hard to find with the LED upgraded lights and I’m so used to high end automotive lighting not sure if I want to go back to that type of basic setup. Also, maybe Nissan will keep producing the trucks so they can catch up with demand and install drivetrain after the resolve comes out.
When I saw that Nissan was putting a Mercedes transmission (it's a 9G-Tronic licensed to Jatco) in the Frontier, Titan, and now the Z I figured it would lead to problems. They should have either stuck with the time-tested 7-speed or developed their own 9 speed.
Parking brake cables are fairly easy to replace. Imagine you would have to replace a vehicle that your nissan truck hit because you didn't apply the parking brake.
Sorry to hear your new truck has issues, don't they all? Still miss you by your wrangler and Gladiator, I thought you filled a needed gap between people just doing cosmetic mods and harder core off-roaders. The everyday owner testing the capabilities and adding sensible mods. I'm sure you will find your way back to jeep. The enthusiasm factor is so much greater and growing everyday during these times. Still enjoying your everyday view on everyday mechanical encounters. PS. if you do go back to jeep do yourself a favor and stay clear of the diesel, there's plenty out there on issues and problems. Some of us just like to hear layback content of things going smoothly.
The only place i don't use the parking brake is in my garage. I hate seeing cars shimming back and forth when people park them. What an unnecessary wear on an auto transmission. Don't know, just always been common practice for me.
Though I am glad to hear there is a fix I think I’ll want to stick with the 2019 frontier that my girlfriend has with the 5 speed automatic transmission. It’s a shame about this issue because I love how the new frontier looks too. But that’s one of the risks when introducing new transmissions and engines. I think they should have kept it the same transmission but that’s just me. It is a shame to hear that though for both the dealers and owners.
Yes, it’s sucks there’s a recall, but I highly doubt the 2023 models have the issue, if so, it’s fixable. After checking my vin for recall, my 2023 pro 4x isn’t affected. Having said that, previous frontiers had transmission issues as well. Last, the new transmission is waaaay better than the previous generations. It’s built based on a Mercedes design and is honestly very impressive. Don’t let this prevent you from getting a newer one if that is what was slowing you down on getting one. The only thing slowing me down was the current ridiculous interest rates
Thanks for the update. I just bought a 2022 sv extended cab 4x4 four days ago and they never said anything about a recall. Either way I will be using the e break.
Same here just purchased my 22 Frontier SV crew cab 3.8 4x4, 6 days ago. Nothing mention of a stop sale. According to my VIN sticker on the drivers side door shows a July 22 date. Not sure if that is a delivery date or build date.
a pity no brand offers a manual tranny any more. an auto tranny is always prone to problems, regardless of brand. when was the last time you heard about problems for any manual tranny?

Working on a fix, ie. crunching numbers six ways til Sunday to figure out how they don’t lose their as$e$ over this. Cost first, safety second. That includes anticipated lawsuits over potential crashes as a result of the defect. Thanks for the info.
And what car manufacturer dont do this. H^^l son just about all manufacturers do this with our dangerous man machines.
No, use the parking brake unless on flat surface parking lot, even with auto. Not using it will cause it to seize and not work properly when needed…using it is better. Video could have been 2 min.
Thx offrd. Big deal. Pls everyone use your parking break. 🙏🏼🙏🏼
... loved my '19 Frontier , PLEASE Nissan sell the Pro4x in king cab here in the U.S. why should Canada have all the fun - til then I'll keep my '21 NV 2500 ...
Not nissans fault. They sourced the trans from jacko. But they will get sorted. I have a 22 pro4X in baja and love it. Zero issues with 10,000 miles. It affects very little trucks. Do t hesitate to get one. Fantastic truck
A great informative video, I have a new 2022 Frontier SV Crew Cab
My 2022 frontier driver door has a faulty locking mechanism
Hmmm...I think mine does too. I can unlock it and it will still be locked.
That sucks, Nissan should issue checks to owners for the inconvenience.
No problem, 2 dollars coming you way.
@@ronb6955 Bet that made you feel warm and fuzzy inside huh?
Off topic, what do you think about the standard headlights? I want a new Frontier with the 6’ bed and CC but they are super hard to find with the LED upgraded lights and I’m so used to high end automotive lighting not sure if I want to go back to that type of basic setup.
Also, maybe Nissan will keep producing the trucks so they can catch up with demand and install drivetrain after the resolve comes out.
I changed my bulbs to LED ones. Massive upgrade. I'm doing the fog lights next.
@@Gunsforfreedom can you share a link to the bulbs you used? Would be greatly appreciated.
@@Gunsforfreedom which ones did you use?
I have always used the parking brake in every vehicle I have owned
Well that sucks for everyone waiting to pick up their new truck. Good to know. Thanks.
The transmission is not a kickstand
I ordered my pro 4x in march and it's supposed to arrive next week. Now they aren't sure if they can even let me buy it 😭
They're are several ppl I know who don't set their Park brake and yeah it baffles me why they don't.
Nissan dealers are still selling these. I just bought a 2022 SV Crew Cab 4x4 on Saturday 7/16.
When I saw that Nissan was putting a Mercedes transmission (it's a 9G-Tronic licensed to Jatco) in the Frontier, Titan, and now the Z I figured it would lead to problems. They should have either stuck with the time-tested 7-speed or developed their own 9 speed.
My local Nissan dealership had no problem selling me my 22 Frontier SV crew cab 3.8 4x4 just a few days ago. Wasn’t aware about the recall.
Sort of surprised there is not a link showing to check.
Its important to NOTE for everyone that the 9spd auto is NOT a JATCO design. They licensed under Mercedes
I just bought the frontier pro 4x last Saturday, I think my wasn’t affected
Parking brake cables are fairly easy to replace. Imagine you would have to replace a vehicle that your nissan truck hit because you didn't apply the parking brake.
Just got my recall in the mail today! I wonder why it took Nissan 3 model years to decide to do the recall??
Anything on 2023 ? Or is it the same thing
Man I love my Tacoma
Maverick had a recall too, all first year cars go through teething issues.
Bought mine in early July. They also never told me about the recall!
I'm sure they informed you of the markup.
Spit the recall reason out man. Geezus.
Bought one this morning.1 recall exists.the parking pawl.its been remedied.
Wow! I have a 2022 9 speed V6, hadn’t a clue!
