@@scott8238 nah i dont need to. This frontier isnt any faster. It just feels faster because of the more aggressive throttle mapping. You can tune the taco to feel the same. A reputable auto reviewer tested a taco vs a frontier and the taco beat it in the acceleration test. The frontier weighs a whole lot more than a taco which is why its not any faster than the lower powered taco. Simple minded people only think cause the drive by wire is setup to be more aggressive that they think its faster or more powerful. In the end they dont make any meaningful power to be class leading. The nissan supposedly is new yet it fails to be class leading in any test. That in itself is a fail. Back to the bottom of the midsize truck you go
up until 2020 the drivetrain was a 4.0 v6 with fewer gears in the transmission. In 2021 they changed to the 3.8 v6 with the 9 speed transmission. That was the test platform before the new redesigned body style. After driving several brands of truck I have come to realize that certain trucks are made for certain body types. Nissan and Ford are for average sized people or even shorter guys. Chevy is designed for taller folks, being 5'4" I had a hard time getting comfortable in any Chevy truck I have driven. Nissan on the other hand is a perfect fit for me. I have the '21 Frontier right now and I am moving into a 2024 this week. I personally like the redesign. The seats are more comfortable right away, with the seats in the '21 I still haven't been able to get comfortable in. For 1800+ mile road trips that was not a fun time in the drivers seat. This being the third generation of the Frontier it has been changed at least 3 times, whether it is drive train, body styling, interior design an ergonomics, Nissan has made improvements over the past 20 years. Yes they did keep one body style for 16 years, but if something works don't fix it unless sales are slumping due to it being the same boring design. The F-150 is perfect example of that, from the mid to late 90's until 2004 they had the same body style. Before that from the late 80's to late 90's it was a different style. If you go back even further from the early 70's until the 80's it was a different body style.
I’ve got a 2023 Pro 4x and overall love it. But yes….give me a setting to keep the radio on when turning off the engine. They could do that with a software update. And what the world on the low resolution cameras??? Firmware can help with that also. And the towing brake should have been included. So my message to Nissan is PLEASE give us some firmware updates that remedy some of the issues.
Love the truck... even some of his "negatives" I find as positives and would prove to be much less expensive if needed repaired or replaced after warranty. I'm a DIY'er when it comes to most auto maintenance/repair/mods, so KISS is definitely what I like.
People are always talking about how much lower priced these are than other brands. I'm not seeing it where I live. They are dead nuts equal to the Tacoma and I can spend about $2k more and get a leather equipped Ridgeline with a moonroof and more features. Local dealerships can't get me one for less than about $42k due to typical option packages that Nissan automatically includes. If I could get a base SV King Cab with the Convenience Package only, I might be interested. Otherwise I'll look elsewhere.
honestly with the amount of abuse I've put my 07 through, I'm really happy about the minimal changes to the frame. I've put more weight than most half tons are rated for in the bed and it did amazing. I had to put some bulkier springs in the rear, but god damn its got a strong frame for a midsize truck.
When I bout my 2006 back in 2006. My friend completely did the same thing as in opening and closing the door. It was so luxury like. Very cool the way you notice it too, Also the previous gen frame was overbuilt so it was nice to have them carry it over along with some improvements.
So what Nissan did is they asked Nissan truck community on what to keep on the truck and what to upgrade. so that's why the truck is sitting like this which I like they listen to customers.
I have a 2021 Frontier SV with the tow package. It was pre-wired for a brake controller. I found one on Amazon specifically wired for the Frontier for around $50. It plugged right in to the provided clip Nissan installed under the driver's side dash. The hardest part about adding the brake controller was finding a good place to mount it. LOL (I put it on the side of the center console by my leg, within easy reach). Since you're towing a trailer, I'm guessing you have the tow package. Might want to look under the dash for the white plug-in clip for the brake controller. :) Interesting about the steering. I went from a '97 Jeep Wrangler (turn on a dime) to the Frontier, so I did notice the difference in turning radius, but it doesn't feel as bad as what you describe with the '22 Frontier. And it isn't stiff at all, like what you're describing. I drive one-handed all the time. I'm wondering if there's something wrong in yours. (Or maybe it just doesn't seem stiff to me after fourteen years of driving forty-year old tandem axle potato trucks...haha!) I agree it'd be nice to have the telescoping steering wheel. I have really long legs, too. But I was able to solve it by putting a 2" thick gel pad between my back and the seat-back. That way my arm isn't fully extended but my legs still have plenty of room. Overall, I love my '21 Frontier. I opted for the '21 because I prefer the old body style over the new body style (and I figure every junkyard in America will have plenty of body parts for it, should the need ever arise, LOL). It has the same engine and 9 speed tranny as yours, although with mine I can switch from automatic to manual by sliding the shifter over. Yours didn't look like it has that option? I'm still not sure how I feel about that option. Only time will tell if it's a good thing or just one more thing that can fail. ;)
Great content. Been looking at the new frontier since it came out. I have seen it up close and even the pro4x but it is something about that $38k price tag for the SV model that just wont allow me to pull the trigger. Idk, maybe I'll just continue to drive my 06 frontier and maybe find a good used 2020 frontier.
I found a good used 2020 SV 4x4 crew cab short bed. Bed liner, bed cover, tie down bracket rails, heated seats, tow package. Only 18,600 miles…,$23,500. I am stoked. I never thought I would be able to afford such a nice, newer truck. Especially in this crazy market.
One of the reasons that I bought Nissan was because of the steering not being electric. Agree with the bad turn ratio. But accessor delay in the radio, Smart Cruse excessive acceleration and transmission yanking when taking off could all be fixed by software. To clarify, screen resolution in Pro-X models is also horrible.
I will say on the yanking. Once I reached about 1500 miles, mine was gone. It's constantly smooth as can be for me now. I believe it's due to the transmission supposedly being a "smart" one that adapts to your driving, so it takes awhile for it to break in if you will.
I’m at 5K on my 2022 Pro4x and it still the same. But I will say, I hardly use the cruise because of this so it is possible that mine hasn’t learned yet. But I believe my truck has a learning disability and may need some special Ed, just like it’s owner.
Your choice is either direct injection for the “big” hp numbers they are advertising or not direct injection and reliability and simplicity without it but it will be more of a dog vs the one with it. Real world change those plugs and oil more often than you would without DI and you will be happier as the response time is better. I agree with the simple engine without it but Nissan can’t have a truck that’s way way off HP advertised vs competitors. Every single manufacturer is adding all these features whether the cost benefit even makes sense. I agree with you 100%.
The biggest drawback to DI, is the back of the intake valves getting caked with oil and gunk. Non DI engines benefit because the fuel washes them off as you drive. As far as power, the Chrysler 3.6 is non-DI, and makes 5 less horsepower than this Nissan, albeit in a car, not a Jeep.
Does the 50842-7S000 oil pan cover work for the 2 wheel drive models? I bought a 2022 Nissan frontier SV 2 wheel drive it has the same problem of a unprotected oil pan.
The back seat and no telescopic steering wheel would bother me. The back seat should be an option. I also read on internet there is a problem with the power driver seat reclining after engine is off and parked.
Just replaced my totaled 2nd Gen Pro-4X with a 2nd Gen SL. I tried a Jeep Wrangler for a few days and it just didn't work for me. The 2nd Gen Frontier is special. I am glad Nissan retained much of that architecture.
My 2019 highlander and now 22 hyundai palisade and my 21 titan all do the same thing with the cruise control safety sense when it slows down in situations where it doesn't have to. Not just nissan or the frontier. It is annoying
I've always wondered why the back seat area in the mid size trucks has to be so tight. Why not stretch it a bit? They found a way to do so in the Tundra without affecting the overall dims and performance.
I agree with the room in the back seat, granted your 6”2. I own a 22 frontier crew cab though I’m only 5”7-8 and it’s more than plenty room for me and my family, though we are not tall people. Yes its steering is a little stiff because it’s hydraulic and not electric steering. Though you get use to it. Overall for me it’s an awesome deal money wise compared to some other mid size truck!
Instead a calling it a 3rd generation Frontier, they should’ve gone with 2.5 generation.😁. I like my 21 Frontier. It has enough tech to satisfy me while being basis enough to satisfy me… and that awesome power train.
Appreciate the review I am loving my 2023, but sad note is that this one did come with the idle off on system , oof but it has one huge battery otherwise it is a great truck and my first actual truck, i came from having a 2007 Nissan Xterra and i loved it
SV Crew Long Bed with Convenience ( Canada). Availability , price, ride and towing was what I looked for ( came from a 09 Ridgeline). That said, I have the misfire code, waiting on a recall parts for the intake manifold, minor issues with the backup sensors( some reports of better mileage after as well0. People with the Pro4x seem to be having entertainment issues, I am getting annoyed by by rear speakers and their lack of power( I have it like 80/20 now and cant hear them). I like the hyd steering, comparable to my older Ridgeline but the turn radius does suck. Im hearing I will be very annoyed by backing up my trailer with the pedestrian alarms. Towing my 3k lb dry TT is good, lots of power. It has some ghosts in the power seats( they seem to move by themselves overnight). The Intel Cruise is a pain but you can revert to normal( the downshifting is crazy). I put a trailer brake in easy enough, just an extra cost really ( lost opportunity for profit for Nissan) and agree, a trailer package is a missed opportunity. Seat comfort is good+, ride is excellent for a full frame, price was excellent compared to everyone else. End of the day, Im happy.
I own a 2002 maxima se manual. Just hit 106k miles. I drive around 7600 miles a year. The car will probably last another 15 or 20 years. These cars weigh less than a 350z and with 255hp there is very little stress on the power train. Having to put 91 octane almost is a blessing because it keeps everything running clean and smooth. I am shopping for a 4x4 suv I can sleep in the back of. The new pathfinder just doesn't have the ground clearance I'm looking for. The 4runner is too expensive in today's market. The new frontier is too expensive as well. Since gas prices are where they are you can find deals on v8s. I may just bite the bullet and get a 2015 GX with 40k miles. I'll keep the maxima for to and from work but use the GX for camping and weekend activities.
I’m glad it isn’t just me. I have a 2022 frontier and really like it but I agree with you about the intelligent cruise control. I have a feeling it’s picking up low hanging tree limbs or a rise in the road. It tends to slow down with nothing in front of me and it will pick back up once I pass the tree limb or start climbing the dip in the road. Also that excessive downshift bugs me when it kicks into to low of a gear and revs up to 4500 rpm and takes off like a bat out of hell. I noticed the engine does not cause the transmission to downshift that extreme when I’m not using the cruise control and going up a hill.
My biggest gripe of my 2022 Pro4X is the cruise control. It is plum crazy. Even a long overpass, it will drop 3-4 gears to make up 2-3 mph. When I’m using the throttle, it might drop one to keep the speed on the same grade. It needs an update.
Can you do a video showing how well the halogen headlights work at night? Thinking about getting a frontier and trying to decide if I need to pay the extra for the LED.
Exactly, I’m not riding in the back. The dog is. The Christmas presents are. The food for the family reunion. The cooler. Those kinds of things fit back there just fine. And if I did ride back there, I’d just take up the entire seat from door to door stretching out. Anyone else complains, I’ll say “Beats walking….Right?”
A locker should have been a optional upgrade for the sv. I’m not into off-roading but if I’m ever going through a snow storm or driving on the sand beach it would be nice to have the locker as a backup.
Like my 22 Frontier SV crew cab 4x4, only thing that bugs me are the halogen headlights and fog lights. I purchased silverstar 9007 55/65W non-led bulbs. As anyone swapped out the halogen ones to a brighter bulb ?
i mean i drive a 99 sonoma all manual. it would be a fair upgrade i think. But how is the shifting on the nissan i heard its not a true shifter, it kind of ignores what gear you want to go to.
Great info and video. Curious why you didn't go with the Titan? Send like the cons would have been fixed in the Titan, granted it may be a bit thirsty and a few dollars more. Thanks
If you did your research ahead of time you already knew the SV does not come with a rear diff locker. The 4wd on the SV trim is for snow and light offroading. The Pro 4x trim is specifically designed for heavy offroading, not just because it has a rear locker but also because it has a higher ground clearance and a full set of skid plates underneath. I bought the SV because I don't care about heavy offloading and I'm not tall so I needed something closer to the ground.
I don’t get why a truck has to be into “heavy off-roading” to have a rear locker. It really bugs me that it’s not even a option that can be added to the sv, for example a rear locker may become very important in a heavy snow storm even within city limits or if you want to take your family to the beach and drive on sand. I hate the pro x trim because it comes with a short bed and sits tall, I like the sv model because it’s lower to the ground, has a longer bed but no locker, these choices really make it a struggle to pick between the two.
@@dohc1974 The Frontier is often compared to the original 1990s Nissan Hardbody truck. Did that have a rear diff locker? I'm just curious, wondering when the rear locker became a common option.
I have the exact same truck. I love my truck, but I agree with you 100%. My main gripe about it is the cruise control, parking sensor and the heavy steering. I used to be able to steer with the friction of my palm or wrist like a cool cat in my other truck, but now I have to grip the steering wheel so it doesn't slip out of my hands at low speed. Cruise control rev high when a car in front leave the lane making me look like a d-bag. Parking sensor keep turning itself back on even in tow mode and beeps at me when I need to take a couple of attempts to park my trailer in my narrow driveway.
I love my 2023 S model king cab natural breathing frontier truck. I will not have a turbo 4 popper or any turbo, it's just another thing to break on the road. I am old so I have driven big V 8's that were not as powerful as this super cool truck. 🥰
Are direct injection engines better? Direct injection improves combustion efficiency, increases fuel economy and lowers emissions. Both systems use electronic fuel injectors to spray fuel into the engine, but the difference is where they spray the fuel. Other manufacturers offering or planning to offer GDI engines include Audi, BMW, Hyundai, Kia, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Lexus, Saab, Subaru and Volkswagen.Dec 2, 2009
If they start lifting the next frontier 4×4's like they used to they might put a better spanking on those toyotas sales wise I know performance wise the old niSSan will whip that ass. I guess I should say make them a little more offroad worthy than just saying lifting them but lifting them is a big one and I'm not even talking about a ridiculous amount just two inches. As far as the back seat room is not as bad to me as the angle of the seat or lack of. I agree with every thing you said on the negatives though.
If it ain’t broke, why fix it? Some nice modern upgrades are nice and it’s simple and proven. With the other Manufacturers making updated midsize trucks and outrageously charging for them, this truck is all around a great buy for anyone wanting simple.
I just got a 23' pro4x for $39K before TTL. It does not have any of the tech/convenience packages, but I kinda like that, simple. great truck for the price. already got a lift and 33' tires on the way.
Nissan made a deal with Nokia and bought all their old flip phones from 2002 just for the cameras. Saved Nissan a fortune. I swear I saw Bigfoot backing up the other day but after further inspection, it was just a tree.
General Motors has been using direct injection engines for more than a decade. “GM went with direct injection engines because it delivers impressive levels of performance, efficiency, and durability. We have applied all the expertise we have developed through generations of direct-injection designs to the all-new 6.6L gas engines on the Silverado HD,” Kociba concluded.

Yeah. I wouldn't buy this truck to haul people in the back. That vertical seat is terrible. The tacoma is more reclined and within half an inch of legroom. My wife spends all of her time in the back with my son. The nissan would piss her off. Nissan fanboys will probably ignore all your negatives.
My biggest complaints on the 22 frontier are as follows, first the worst handling truck on a windy day that I have ever owned in my 79 years, it blows all over the inter state roads. Second it has very little power on the road if you go up a very small grade it down shifts usually two gears, no torque. I brought the issues to the MN. dealer & was told that they were all like that. Still i traded my loaded 18,000 mile Colorado for it and found the Frontier a much, much, much better truck.
all these annoyances and he still buys it . this is wishbone it is all new truck he really should do his due diligence before putting out these stupid reviews. guy cant even operate his wipers correctly . holding lever back a half second longer and they do engage after spraying windshield. did he not test drive and go over it with the salesman. baffling .
Considering price, value, reliability, simplicity - I'm going to say this may be the best new truck available out there today.
Imagine that

My 02 had an amazing turn radius. Sad to hear they didn't keep it that good.
I own a 2002 maxima se manual.
Just hit 106k miles. I drive around 7600 miles a year. The car will probably last another 15 or 20 years. These cars weigh less than a 350z and with
255hp there is very little stress on the power train.
@@clintshanks2538 exactly. I’m hoping they will hav a fix for that soon.
@@clintshanks2538 Mine does not behave like that at all, did your dealership mount a license plate over the radar rectangle in the front bumper?
Can you do a video showing how well the halogen headlights work at night? Thinking about getting a frontier and trying to decide if I need to pay the extra for the LED.
It’s a midsize truck. No one buys those expecting big rear seat room.
Can’t expect a mid level tier truck to have ALL of the options like a Locker.
Follow the groups, people are putting 2.5 inch lifts on these left and right. Saw a dealer lift when I got my SV.
I take it I’ll have to remove the glove box to replace the cabin air filter when that time comes.
Does this fit on the 2022 2wd frontier as well?
The HP rating is 310 on this truck not 281. Only thing I'm worried about on this truck is the Direct injection......can it be ok up to 300K?
he was talking about the torque not the horse power. it has 281 lb-ft torque
If it ain’t broke, why fix it? Some nice modern upgrades are nice and it’s simple and proven. With the other Manufacturers making updated midsize trucks and outrageously charging for them, this truck is all around a great buy for anyone wanting simple.
So does the engine not have port injection at all?
You also have to put things in perspective too right? 20 years ago this truck would outclass most half tons for power.
These are REALLY overpriced right now.
I just got a 23' pro4x for $39K before TTL. It does not have any of the tech/convenience packages, but I kinda like that, simple. great truck for the price. already got a lift and 33' tires on the way.
I have a Pro4X the camera resolution is not very good.
Nissan made a deal with Nokia and bought all their old flip phones from 2002 just for the cameras. Saved Nissan a fortune. I swear I saw Bigfoot backing up the other day but after further inspection, it was just a tree.
@@clintshanks2538 Ha!!! It’s about that bad.
Maybe a telescope future if you want to sit on the back sit and drive the truck from back there 🤔...
Frontier offers the only half ton frame on a midsize truck in the class.
Nice truck
I pull a 3k trailer up 6000 ft on the regular
That truck didn't even come with fender liners.
Wait till the 2024 every thing will change again
So June/July is when they usually start putting out new models, so hopefully by May they start leaking info to TFL guys etc.
It’s 2024 and things haven’t changed for the frontier
Yeah. I wouldn't buy this truck to haul people in the back. That vertical seat is terrible. The tacoma is more reclined and within half an inch of legroom. My wife spends all of her time in the back with my son. The nissan would piss her off.
Nissan fanboys will probably ignore all your negatives.
💄on the 🐷 funny. A hill Billy joke. 🤣
Good ole reliable hydraulic power steering! Keep that unreliable electric junk off the Frontiers... eat some Wheaties.
That’s not a crew
My biggest complaints on the 22 frontier are as follows, first the worst handling truck on a windy day that I have ever owned in my 79 years, it blows all over the inter state roads. Second it has very little power on the road if you go up a very small grade it down shifts usually two gears, no torque. I brought the issues to the MN. dealer & was told that they were all like that. Still i traded my loaded 18,000 mile Colorado for it and found the Frontier a much, much, much better truck.
all these annoyances and he still buys it . this is wishbone it is all new truck he really should do his due diligence before putting out these stupid reviews. guy cant even operate his wipers correctly . holding lever back a half second longer and they do engage after spraying windshield. did he not test drive and go over it with the salesman. baffling .
