    Impressively pertinent video. Covers exactly the topics needed to help someone move from a Gen III platform to a Gen IV. Also, there aren't a lot of people that can speak that intelligently, yet understandably, about topics of this nature. Someone give that man a raise!

      I had a question right now I got a junkyard find it’s. 5.3 iron block from a 2002 suburban and I have a 08 gmc Sierra I want to put it in I was wondering if it’ll bolt right in. Right now the 02 5.3 has the electronic throttle body a cable that connects to the oil pan and the knock sensors maybe I can by pass the oil pan with the old one as well as the intake connecting the throttle body but now what about the knock sensors ?

    Thank you for the information sir. I hope this gets shared 10000 more times. Solid ideas for a 5.3 in my 76 Chevy. I have everything for the swap exept the computer. I was going to do a stand alone tci box on a 4l60, (wrong bellhousing) or manual trans/carburetor for simplicity.....the great debate is on.....

    I love seeing these various sensor converters that make these stock computers work.
    I learned about it for the first time back in 1998. When getting more than 400 horsepower out of a Nissan 300ZXTT, the stock MAF becomes a choke point. Various sensor formula converters would make it possible to fit an oversize MAF and still get proper drivability.
    I'm kind of surprised that the 24 tooth computer couldn't be reflashed to understand the 58 tooth wheel. Oh well, as long as there is a quick solution, I'm happy.

We didn't know they was different until we put motor in and started hooking things up. The cast iron block had knock sensor's on top of engine and cam sprocket was a 3 bolt with sensor on timing cover. We bought the sprocket that will adapter to that but the engine runs but no power. What do we need to fix this problem. Thanks for any advice on fixing it.

      I switched out a gen 4 engine to a gen 3 and had the newer reluctor wheel pressed on and changed the cam sensor out. My engine only ran on 4 cylinders.
      I had to take the computer out which takes less than five minutes. I took it to a tuner and told him what I had and what I switched to. He reprogrammed the computer and now it runs perfectly I hope that helps.
      It cost me about $200.

      If you mean putting a Gen 4 block in a Gen 3 car and running it on the Gen 3 PCM:
      th-cam.com/video/CBvmETzImY0/w-d-xo.html
      If you're trying to put a Gen 3 block in a Gen 4 car on a Gen 4 PCM, you have to change the reluctor wheel on the crank as well. Considering the price point on all that, it's usually easier and more effective to just start with a Gen 4 block.

    I need some professional advice please.
    So I have an 08 Silverado that came with a gen 4- 5.3 liter engine. I bought a gen 3 LS in a 6 liter.
    I had a piece pressed into the crankshaft, I think it was the reluctor wheel? And he switched out the cam thing on the front. Then my engine ran on four cylinders until I took the computer to some guy who reprogrammed it so now it runs great.
    Here's my problem. The guy who did it decided not to install the knock sensor at all. I would like to eventually install a basic turbocharger on it. I think I need a knock sensor for that. What is the most easy and cheap way to get a knock sensor on this engine?
    One more problem is I have a ridiculous oil leak that looks like it is coming from the rear main seal. It's losing several quarts a week and I'm getting tired of putting oil in it plus it needs to be fixed before I can put a turbo charger in it. It has a new high volume Meling oil pump and I have lots of oil pressure, 40 psi idling warm 60psi while driving, so the engine seems pretty solid. How hard is it to put in a rear main seal and any advice on that?
    I had no idea this guy was going to half ass everything like he did but I'm kind of stuck with it and I would like to make it right. Is there anything else that would cause a leak that looks like it is from the back of the engine close to the transmission underneath? Thanks

    • @Sdpartscenter
      @Sdpartscenter  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You'll need to remove the transmission, torque converter and flywheel to gain access to the rear main seal plate.
      If the harness is still there, you might be able to run some knock sensors on the outside of the block if you have room and might be able to find a hole to tap the right thread for the sensors.
      It would be recommended to find a good shop to take care of both of those issues especially if you're losing as much oil as stated.
      It's one of many reasons we usually recommend finding a good gen 4 block because of all the extra work involved of making a gen 3 work in a gen 4 vehicle.

    • @actionjksn
      @actionjksn 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Sdpartscenter I didn't know anything when I was buying the engine and the guy lied to me about everything. I don't have the money to replace the engine again, I'm stuck with it. I don't have the money to pay a shop now so I'm going to have to figure it out on my own.
      The guy who sold me the engine said it was compatible.
      His brother in law had the crank sensor done and put it together and installed the engine.
      I'm wondering what he did wrong to cause the severe oil leak. Maybe reused the old seal? I didn't even know a rear main seal could possibly leak that bad. BTW I told him if he needed to replace any parts I would pay for them, so there's no excuse for not replacing the seal.
      This has been well over a year ago so I'm stuck with this thing. If I could get these two problems with the oil leak and the knock sensor sorted out the engine runs really well. It runs smoothly and doesn't miss out.
      It does lack power on the low end which I suspect is because the timing is not being advanced with it not having knock sensors. But that's just a guess I don't know for sure. I'm guessing this is going to behave similar to an older engine that doesn't have a functioning vacuum advance?
      I'm not even sure where to look to see if there is a wiring harness for the knock sensors. If I could find it I could probably tap the side of the block for the knock sensors.
      Thanks for the reply.

    • @Sdpartscenter
      @Sdpartscenter  ปีที่แล้ว

      Then you'll have to change the reluctor and update the cam sprocket to that of a 58x setup. All in all, it's easier to just get a Gen 4 engine than it is to go through the hassle and machine work of trying to make a Gen 3 work on a Gen 4 pcm.

      You can, but you'd need to of course remove the crank, remove the reluctor and have a 58x tacked on. Most of the time it is easier and more cost effective to just buy a Gen4 block and let it eat.

    That clears up swapping newer engine to old computer but what about putting a gen 3 engine in a gen 4 vehicle. For example, let's say you have a gen 4 4.8L truck but have a built gen 3 LQ4 engine you want to swap in?

    • @Sdpartscenter
      @Sdpartscenter  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you're going to run a standalone like a Holley Terminator, fire away.
      The Gen 3 would need a 58x reluctor added to the crank. You can't just increase a 24x signal to a 58x as there isn't a way to properly convert that signal and step it up unlike the Gen 4 engine on a Gen 3 computer wich takes the 58x and steps it down to 24x.
      You'd also have to find somewhere to mount the knock sensors on the side of the block.
      Then the cam signal.
      General rule of thumb there is just sell it to somebody for a good price and get a Gen 4.

    • @Sdpartscenter
      @Sdpartscenter  23 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Not directly, and you can't use anything like the LG control box. You'll have to disassemble the engine, install the 58x reluctor, a 4x signal sprocket on the camshaft.
      You can step down the 58x signal to run on a 24x pcm, but 24x cannot step up signal to run on a 58x pcm.
      If you haven't disassembled the engine, it tends to be easier to sell the 24x engine and snag a 58x setup.

      The piston slap was evident in some LS1s on cold starts that was just the name of the game back then.
      An LS3 is going to start you off with an engine with more baseline power, and fresher components. It might be a little more investment right off the bat, but the LS3 is a great foundation to build from.

      The only way is to disassemble the Gen 3 and put a 58x reluctor in it and run a cam with a 3x sprocket.
      Otherwise, sell the Gen 3 and find a Gen 4.
      You can step down a 58x crank signal to 24x, you cannot step-up a 24x signal to 58x.
