Awesome job brother!!! Imagine how many of house old cleavers and knives that have been trashed over the years and could have had a new life like you gave that old majestic piece!!!
That's a lot of band-aids on your fingertips. Maybe you should get some of those woodcarving gloves that are cut-resistant! Anyway, thanks for the video. It makes me want to try doing that myself.
Thank you sir, I’m glad you enjoyed it! As for the band aids, it’s actually a bunch of sand paper cuts 😵 there were two days of sanding on the blade and handle, at some point you can see I start wearing gloves. In any case, definitely try doing some restoration / knife making yourself! It’s very meditative and so much fun!! Just stock up on sandpaper, gloves and some bandaids ;)
Peanut butter will break down the adhesive property in the masking tape glue. Use dish soap & running warm water to wash away the peanut butter. This procedure may require a couple of applications in a row to remove all of the adhesive & peanut butter but it will get the job done.
Tried acetone, alcohol, turpentine, eventually sanded back down to 600 and up again. Someone did suggest a type of gun oil and I haven’t found the exact one yet. Cheers
In most European style handles, even for Japanese chef knives it’s quite common to see a Yo (western)style handle. In this case, and since I was going for a traditional Japanese knife I made a Wa (Japanese) style handle which is less known in the US for example. The design has to do with the weight and the force used with this type of knife.
BEAUTIFUL !!

When making knives, the upper part of the handle should not be higher than the back of the knife.
