Nice work! I'm sure Master Matsuzawa would approve of your work. Creative conversion of a Gyoto, that through decades of hard use became a Hawkbill, for you to convert into a Bunka -- brilliant.
Thanks ! These are some shavings from glue sticks that are made for glue guns ! I just use the beeswax at the end to do a final seal and prevent water from leaking inside the handle

So a kirtuske is traditionally a single bevel knife with about +200mm in blade length. The use of the term kiritsuke deviated from its original meaning and it is now used to refer to double bevel knifes with a k-tip (that pointy tip) that are +200mm in blade length. When a knife has that k-tip but is closer to 170-180mm, it’s called a bunka. If it’s below 150mm, it’s called a ko-bunka !
This was my first time using it so I can’t really talk long term but for 100€ it’s really quite decent ! I had to buy some separate finer sanding belts but I was not satisfied with the quality so I would suggest buying some higher end ones !
@@dnarvarg Yeah I can imagine, can't expect too much, how's overheating? I saw that you are diping your knife between grinding sessions into the water, seems to work pretty good
@@skillshamer194The sander itself didn’t seem to have any overheating issues, but of course whenever you’re grinding material, the latter will get hot ! I was very scared to fuck up the heat treatment so I was really careful not to let the blade get too hot
It makes it lighter ! The full tang handle was extremely heavy, and as I reprofiled the blade, the knife became very unbalanced. I had to make the handle lighter, and converting it to a wa handle was the best option I had
@@rock_machine01 well that depends on the quality of the steel and the heat treatment. Masamoto knives have solid performance in terms of edge retention
Rust doesn’t form in seconds. 😂 that’s a process that takes place in no less than around a couple days worth of time. But I did enjoy the redesign into a new knife. Looks great.
Yes it does, on carbon steel blades rust can form in just a few minutes, even quicker with acidic foods ! And the blade was wet for about an hour while I was grinding the bolster so it had a lot of time to rust
Gorgeous!!!! Such a beautiful knife, and such a beautiful job! You're incredible sir, congratulations!!
pretty amazing hard work
very nice work! i especially like the handle
Thank you very much!

Thanks ! :)
Awesome video was great to watch!
Bloody beautiful
thanks !
Fantastic!
What a nice knife this turned out to be. I would love to have one like this in my set of Masamotos
@@stoneform thanks ! Making a k-tip is quite easy actually, the hard part is the handle transition
Not a restoration, but a repurpose. Good job.
Awesome transformation my fiend!
Great work 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Excellent job on the resto! I've subscribed to see more knife work. Request: do a Western knife when you have time, please.
Thank you ! I might do western handles at some point but I first want to be really comfortable with wa-handles, so I’ll stick with that for now

Good job 👏
Wow, damn good work!
thanks :)
It has been decades since Masamoto makes knives. They are now only knife seller. Reselling knives with their brand name on it.
Even though the initial model of the handle was stronger, it was actually made smaller so it was fragile and easily broken.
Amazing jobs bro! You totally can sale your own brand knife! Also I think this knife can sale kind 200USD !
holy shit thats amazing!!
Thanks man !
Nice work man
thanks man !
Superb.
SRY,
to use a band grinder is a crazy idea it would be much easier when you take a flex to shorten the blade
Cheers from 🇦🇹
Yeah is know unfortunately I didn’t have a flex back then… Cheerz from 🇫🇷
Da bursch hod scho recht, de flex hed des scho gricht 🇦🇹
curious, why a slow grind on the tip rather than take a chunk off with an angle grinder/band saw/etc?
Restauración tiene otro significado en cualquier parte del mundo. Eso sería una transformación, modificación o un reciclado. Saludos
nice work. what are those white pellets you stuffed into the handle?

thanks you :)
Ніж вийшов гарним! Тепер треба закріпити стола, або зробити нового верстака, бо так працювати неможливо!
Haha thanks and yes, I really do need a proper workbench…
incredible work. how the hell did the knife end up looking like the first version though?
@@TheLeesto haha yeah i wondered the same thing, maybe a pull through sharpener ? It was like that when I bought it
Amazing. What glue did you use inside the handle?
Wax :)
@@methilda2927 beeswax?
@@soverain I think candlewax, the beeswax is just to top ot off as the final layer. At least thats what I think from watching the video 👍

please pardon me for my ignorance, but isn't that the shape of a kiritsuke?

Is that pieces of a hot glue stick you put in the tang insert?
Yes it it. I prefer this to epoxy as it’s easier to remove if I ever want to replace the handle

Lol, why use cutting only on tang lol.
Blade could be cut as well as bolster. You have to much free time.
