- New York has had garbage problems since before it became New York. New Amsterdam’s first sanitation department was a bunch of pigs…..And those pigs stuck around well in to New York’s early history. They were finally banned the late 1800’s and the city commissioned a sanitation department. Until that point though, New York STUNK!!!!! It was well documented that some areas were knee deep in garbage.
By the early 1900’s New York began to use its less populated southern shore as a dumping ground for its garbage. It had to go somewhere. The garbage was supposed to stay in sealed containers but by the 1950’s the seals broke and the garbage began to wash ashore.
America’s most polluted but perhaps most fascinating national park is littered with glass bottles, shoes and toys from old New York. Its called Glass Bottle Beach off of Dead Horse Bay. New York’s ghosts are out in full force. You can literally interact with the past.
This sites history dates back to the 1700’s and there is still a millstone that can be seen from Dutch New Amsterdam. In the 1800’s the area was full of glue factories where animal hides were boiled down to glue. Many of the bones and remnants from that era wash up on shore today. Right across the street from Glass bottle beach is Floyd Bennett Field, New York’s first major airport, which is now a campsite for New York residents and a training site for many of the cities municipalities.

Just recently saw videos from 2 different youtubers. Never heard of it before.
That rectangular piece of metal with the two holes in the middle is actually an old light control
plate. In the early electric years, you turned your lights on and off by pressing buttons. At the end of my block is a home built in about 1907, and that is where I first encountered this.

Thanks for the history lesson Merrill, fascinating. I'm familiar with Floyd Bennett Field, as it was where Russell Boardman and John Polando took off from on their record-setting flight to Istanbul back in 1931.

The bottle opener I would say is from the brewery Ballentine. The horn button my guess is from a Plymouth. I would have to agree with you that "Mudlarking" would be the best way. You will have a nervous breakdown digging every beep! I live in Tampa but started out in Buffalo. Have a Genesee beer for me!

The garbage is washing down from the upper part of the beach and going out. The landfill has broken wide open . I’ve been there since 1981 and watched this all unfold
90% of the garbage is from 1954 the year they caped the dump. All the old garbage is under the airport and Flatbush ave
Thanks for the trip,nice merc and broach......heads up ......no metal detecting allowed out there.....park rangers usually allow some ground pickups but can give you a hefty fine if they see fit.....again,just a heads up......make sure you have your NYC MD permit with you at all times

I grew up 5 minutes from there, in Canarsie. I live in NJ now, and I used a Safari for quite a few years too...it's one of the best detectors ever...especially on coins & silver. Found boatloads of coins and relics with it here in local parks. You seem to know your stuff, but one tip...you REALLY need to use a small coil in trashy areas like that. The little sniper coils are great. They're a bit larger than a hockey puck, and are like laser beams that can cut through the garbage. Other than that, well done, sir!
P.S. - I hunted Marine Park last year with a buddy of mine. The soil was bone dry because it was during a dry spell in the summer. Only got a merc and some wheats, and it was BRUTAL digging in the hard, dry dirt.

Apparently when the factories shut down many people living on the islands in Jamaica bay had to leave quite suddenly.and most all of their possessions..what lift!e they were got left behind
This is true if the industry, horse bones and brushes and such. However, the land was an island before and is now connected to the mainland. When Robert Morris was building expressways and parkways, many of the people who lived on that land were brought out, their homes, which were bulldozed and thrown in a landfill in the water to connect Barren Island to the mainland in the 1930s. This was covered with soil (capped), like most landfills are. Unfortunately the landfill (cap) broke in the 1950s and everything from that time has been washing up on the beach.

Those people were looking for silver coins to spend as coins. My sister lives in Rhode Island. She got a 1916 Mercury in change, less than ten years ago.
the aviator is a convention center. as far as pilots go, nypd's aviation unit it stationed at fbf.

You might want to start looking into old bottle prices. In the 1800's and early 1900's they killed horses to make fertilizer and glue.

(if you pick it up , its yours )and if you dont want it put it in the trash can , clean your state , this should be a law or way of liveing there
