Early this morning , searching facebook marketplace for old motorcycles. Watched your video. My bank account is safe. Thanks Dave! Lately your videos have kept me from buying any more old bikes. My wife thanks you also😅.
I owned 3 (!) Cagiva 500's. They can kick back. One time the kick starter came back and tore out the entire lenght of my High Point boots. I had the boot sown and all was good. I thought it broke my ankle. The pain was a 10 but after 3 hours . And on 3-4 occassions I started it and put it in gear and took off in REVERSE! First time really gets your attention. The other times I caught it right away. nothing quite like taking off in reverse with a 500CC 2 stroke.
I just keep checking things, then sometimes rechecking. Eventually I will get it. The timing was pretty advanced on the Pursang, so we'll see and keep trying.
All in all, a great day. Norton is interesting though, one, called a Roton, raced a 500cc GP at Eastern Creek Australia (Norton claiming it's capacity at 588cc 4 stroke in the age of 2 stroke) and Steve Hislop won the senior TT at the Isle of Man in 1992. As with most English bikes it's a case of what "could have been".
Check the timing check the owners manual. Check the thing that is the thing. Hit it with the ether. Tick a tick a little timing. use the Norton to pull the Bultaco to start.
Is the tach ram off a cable? If so maybe the cable is dry? If that doesn’t fix it , maybe it’s like the tach on older BMW’s and needs services from time to time ie opened up and greased. Anyway great video it really shows what it’s like owning multiple old bikes👍🏻
Big bore 5 speed (square barrel ) I think have copper head gasket. At least Sherpa and Alpina do. Those bikes should fire up with a couple of kicks if the timing is correct. As I mentioned to you, sacrifice a spare flywheel (cut the cam out ) to do the points easier. Or just buy Electrex World ignitions for them.
That was a Doc Z starter, but Doc passed away. I think someone took over the business but I dont know who. You can google Doz Z, paddock starter, roller starter or go over to vft.org. Sometimes they're for sale there.
Thanks for the video Dave but man what a comedy of errors. Do you have a source for that wheel starter? I could use one myself but don't really want to shell out $1500 for one.
The unseen problem with two strokes is porting tools. Check the port timing and compression. Someone who didn't know what they were doing might have been fooling with it.
I didn’t know you couldn’t sing Dave 🤣…there is nothing more scary than seeing one of us Boomers throwing caution to the wind and tempting knee and back failure in the pursuit of victory over a stubborn bike.
ROLLING STARTER. BEST THING TO DO SERIOUS GET A BIG STRONG KID GIVE HIM $100 START BIKES RIDE UP AND DOWN THE STREET PUT BIKES AWAY. 100 BUCKS. DAVE SAVE YOURSELF FROM A SURGERY AND WHEELCHAIR FOR A YEAR.
Old men & old two stokes....😂 I old & walk with a permant limp. Shed full of Old 2 strokes. Will add roller starters are useless on big bores with Knobbies👏😉👊🇭🇲
At 1 minute and 11 seconds in I see somebody finally took my advice about a roller starter. Bravo.
I dont always use it, but I've had it out before.

Ha! Usually, its the other way around.
@@bullpencycles Yeah, There's a '73 RD350 in my garage now, my first vintage bike. All thanks to your videos. Love it, Thanks

Dave, The Norton is BadAss! No more singing!!!
So I didn't pull it off eh, I was trying to keep it light.
Great Real World video Dave.
Thanks for sharing your enthusiasm and knowledge about bikes. Wish I had your patience.
Yeah, it was a frustrating day.
I had some succes starting stubborn 2strokes with a bit of brake cleaner on the air filter. I am shure you chequed the fouled up ( oily) spark plugs.
I just keep checking things, then sometimes rechecking. Eventually I will get it. The timing was pretty advanced on the Pursang, so we'll see and keep trying.
It was warm enuf in Maine today to ride in a tshirt on ,a CT90 . Great bikes ! Love to see enduro history .

Yup. 588 is the claimed capacity
Every video an adventure! Thank you sir.✌️
Glad you like them, even when I fail! This was a big failure!
@@bullpencycles - Naw, sometimes success can be boring; failure is an opportunity in coveralls.
Geeze, can’t believe I said that.
Check the timing check the owners manual. Check the thing that is the thing. Hit it with the ether. Tick a tick a little timing. use the Norton to pull the Bultaco to start.
There's a thought. Use the broke down Norton to start the broken Bultaco, might make a good video.

I dont know. I kinda doubt it. Where would you connect a cable on a wankel?
I saw the Nortons run at the Isle of Man in 1989..Didn't do well lots of power but did not handle very well..

They came both ways for a spell. These motoplat bikes do not have points.
Start out at TDC before kicking . Really digg the greevs! Yea
We've got it going, sort of. The timing was off.....th-cam.com/users/shorts1xlsh0bQcrs?si=RitdWYSiPXhrOcx0
Dave, in Australia these bikes would be in a museum!
Aren't they simply Georgiou's!
I should be in a museum too, though!
@@bullpencycles 🤣
Those Bikes were a bitch to start when we were young , well for me anyway , you're a wildman Dave , never change...... Osprey's nest ?
Yes. Ospreys with little ones
I suggested a roller starter before...... My knee still hurts from watching you hurt your knee.
Unfortunately, they still didnt start.
Oh yeah bunch of beauties love the 2 strokes forever.
I would like you to comment on your starting machine. Where you got a question how much? Stuff like that

Yeah, sometimes the day doesnt work out.
Money Taker, Leg Breaker...sounds like a Rolling stones tune.
I was thinking about a gospel tune, but I think maybe the Stones too.
Also music sounds good and is the right volume. Much better.
Thanks.
Listening through headphones I can hear music and a freeway.

Someone who didn't know what they were doing might have been fooling with it.
Yes, there was someone fooling with it. It's pieced together from who knows what. I'll just keep digging deeper. Eventually I will get it.
Been there. Done that!
I didn’t know you couldn’t sing Dave 🤣…there is nothing more scary than seeing one of us Boomers throwing caution to the wind and tempting knee and back failure in the pursuit of victory over a stubborn bike.
Victory at all costs - Victory in spite of all terrors - Churchill, but I'm not Churchill.

you need to yell SUNOFABITCH while kick starting. it scares the bike into starting.
Yes, but I'd have to bleep it out!

Some of those old bikes are cool but if they're that much aggravation and you can't get them running or ride them, they would be going up for sale
Ocala , that's where I live. Just curious why ocala
The Bullring and Hardrock.
@@bullpencycles ok thanks
Hey hey, dont give up your day job.We enjoy it to much and you cant sing...
Yeah, I was trying to keep it light!
