How to Paint a Whimsical Abstract Landscape in Mixed Media | Intuitive and Mindful Painting Process

- Experimentation and play are key to developing our skills and style as artists and I do this a lot! This little painting started with inspiration from my paint palette. Then, by following my intuition, I was able to take something that was only ok for me in the beginning and transform it into a composition I really love. Oh what a joy it is to create! I read the article you recommended. I'm feeling so relieved!! I am a great copier. What I lack in imagination, I make up for with precision copying. I've always given credit to the original artist, but still always felt guilty for using their design. After reading the article, I now realize that I am in the learning phase of my craft. Thank you for sharing. I read Christine's article. I copy all the time. I'm not selling any of my art or gifting any pieces that I've copied, but I reference my source on the actual piece even in my art journals. For the very few art pieces I've posted online, I reference sources and inspiration because I'm so worried about being accused of stealing someone's work. Peace.
I'm so glad you enjoyed the article!! ☺️ I find trying to replicate another artist work to be such an easy way to learn and that in fact it is exactly how I learned to paint many years ago. Today, I have the means to take some classes here and there and if I post the work I create in my workshops, I do the same. It's good to give artists prop for the work they do. And at the same time, we are learning about our likes and dislikes which leads to us developing a style of our own. Peace being sent your way as well ❤️☮️
I didn't read the article but My thoughts about copying someone's work, takes me back to workshops I did with Bob Ross certified teachers. We all painted the same subject, but everyone had their own take on the painting. Not everyone's brush stroke is the same and I don't think you could be as precise as the person who painted it. We all try at least some, to copy work done by the master painters and maybe only a few come very close. Yes , we need to be respectful and yet inspired by other people's works.
I agree with everything you say here! ☺️ I would have not learned as much as I have had I not first tried to reproduce work from other artists whose work I really appreciate. I loved watching Bob Ross on TV. He made it all seem possible and less complicated, didn't he. ❤️ The article has some other interesting things to consider, especially when wanting to produce work we want to sell and post as our own original work (and ideas). I appreciate you making the time to share this and love that we can all learn from each other through conversation. ☺️

I would like to share my personal examples for the topic "Inspiration / Plagiarism".
I also do handicrafts, often also very old techniques, such as Sprang on a Germanic weighted loom, I built myself following images on old documents and by using natural materials like my forefathers have also used. I am so firm in various handicrafts, that I can't possibly stick to a patterns, some one else came up with. I end up making so many change, that my final piece seems totally different and wouldn't be recognized by others as being somehow related to the original piece.
With drawing and painting I am somewhat a beginner in comparison to my handicrafting. So I try to learn from those who draw, paint, print, collage, form, etc in a manner that touches my creative self. There are various, completely different artist I follow and who I watch in the creative process they share online or personally. I love learning and exploring new techniques. Some I abandon at some point, others I experiment with several weeks or even months, and sometimes also really very intensive over very, very long periods. I also like watching good art videos multiple times, while drawing or painting along. Interestingly, the better I can use a certain technique, the more my artwork differs from the original. So in the beginning I might stick to the same colors and shapes, but as I move along in a certain technique or art style, my piece looks more and more different from the other artist's work in the video I watch.
Since I was a child, I liked the combination of watercolor and ink. This is why I started following your channel btw. 😁
I guess, the more sophisticated I become with certain techniques, which I like using, the more I build up my own style, thus move away from the final piece, that inspired me. And finally I sort of own it.
Also, I am totally crazy about colors and color combinations - as anybody doing handicrafts and having huuuuge stashes of yarn. So this is another reason to watch the videos of other artists. But then I also make screenshots while watching movies or documentaries, if I see wonderfully matching colors. 🤭 My ex boyfriend always got anniyey when I did this and then we had to see the scene again. OMG colors and yarns and books and animals really touch my heart. 💞

I think copying was part of the learning process for a lot of us & provides a valuable means to discover our own unique style.
Also, regarding adding white to your work - have you tried a dip pen & ink?
I began using a glass dip pen with Dr PH Martins white ink & it works a treat for me. Sometimes use a gouache too (Windsor & Newton is my fave for this).

I have had an interesting diversion recently, due to a health issue which prevented me from being able to get into my studio. I’m in my 60s now, and from a very early age I drew - pencil portraits, pen ‘line’ pictures etc, totally intuitive. It’s only fairly recently that I started using colour, and I’m loving it. I did a watercolour/pen picture a few months ago which was definitely influenced by your work, but in no way a copy. I posted it on Instagram and tagged you, which you graciously acknowledged. My current work however is using alcohol markers because I didn’t want to bring all my watercolour paraphernalia into the house. I am so enjoying experimenting with my dual tip pens that my husband bought me over a year ago, but I hadn’t really used. So, I’ve learned new skills just because I’ve had to adapt to a new situation. I will get back to my studio soon I hope, so in the meantime, I continue to watch your inspirational work, and enjoy connecting with you and others that ‘get’ this kind of art. ❤️

I love to see magic appear on your paper, its so inspiring, and I read the article and agree, we all find inspiration from others thats how we all learn, I love doodling and watching you create wonderful pictures on top of watercolour really resonates with me, and has certainly inspired me to maybe do my doodles on top of watercolour as its so forgiving, so thank you for these wonderful videos you share, because without artists like you sharing your work how will we become our own unique artist. And also new artist can also give other artists ideas too. I have always used fine liners, never thought to use a fountain pen, is it smooth to draw with, as it will certainly last longer than my fine liner tip, might give that a go

It would have been hard for me to resist putting at least one dot of gold, in the middle of the white "dandelions"! 😂 I love the way you enjoy what you're doing! Color = Joy! When I doodle I usually just play around and make little patterns wherever they fit, no plan just play, then I go onto something else. I am working on a page of doodles (no painting). I've gotten so much inspiration from you! The basic shape I'm using is an oval in various sizes and they go in different directions. I'm using black with white, silver and gold accents. I'm trying to pay attention to contrasts like you do, and trying to keep it simpler. I love this landscape and will try and copy it for my own learning and satisfaction. I have never shared my work on line and am not really interested in doing that (I am my own worst critic!). However I have just started to create designs and make cards to send to friends. These, with one exception, are not exact copies but heavily influenced by artists such as yourself and I should perhaps have credit the influencer on the back of the card, I will now do this after having read the article. I never claim to be a creator of art, I am definitely a copier and I would never sell or profit from something someone else created! Thank you for sharing the article, made me think about what I'm doing. Much appreciated.

Oh bummer!! I thought I had seen a British flag on their website, but I guess that doesn't mean they serve all of the UK 😔 Let's see! A friend sent me some Coliro paints and they are really nice - not quite as shimmery and brilliant as Star Gold, but nice none the less. This past week, I watched a video by Annie Claxton (@artyfartyannie - th-cam.com/video/oQh506lal30/w-d-xo.html) and she was using some handmade metallic watercolors by CSY that I thought looked really nice. I've never used them myself, but they definitely caught my attention in her video. And I think she's in the UK, but maybe I'm wrong... Hopefully this is a good start for some options! I'm going to leave myself a note to ask about this in my next video and hopefully we can find you some good substitutes ☺️

Thank you again for your kind words! ❤️😉 I love Kremer Pigments and I’m not sure why a link to their website did not make it into my video description 🤔 I have been including it in most of my recent videos and here it is: shop.kremerpigments.com/us/. I basically have put together my palette using the colors I love to paint with the most. I buy most of my paints in tubes and I bought an empty Arteza watercolor palette on Amazon to assemble them all together. There are other little palettes I also really love - like ones from CSY Art Gallery and Prima watercolors. Usually, I list the paints I use in my video description, but sometimes I do forget to list something so it never hurts to ask. I hope this helps ☺️

And I can’t use shimmering colors or our star gold, with my natural landscapes in watercolor, at least not much. But… I always find a way to apply it there too but only tiny spots😂✨

Thank you for your time to respond to my question. So, you prefer removing the watercolor page from the tablet and taping to a sequel but transportable surface. Have ever used anything other than plexiglass like a wood board, tile, tabletop, counter, ...? Do you always work on a flat surface? Have you tried incorporating Zentangles to a greater degree? I'm truly intrigued by your process. Keep up the great work and continue inspiring creatves .
Hi ❤️☺️ Yes, I like to work on a rigid surface and taping my paper to it for a number of different reasons. The first is that I love the white frame the tape leaves around my painting when my process is done. I also really love the fact that taping the paper to a hard surface helps to keep my paper from buckling while I'm working on my painting. I have used other surfaces like clip boards and my desk top but I do prefer to work from something I can lift to move the water and paint while I'm working. I also generally love to work on a smaller scale than the paper tablets I buy. I have a paper cutter and I cut the paper to different sizes depending on what I feel like doing for a particular project. This helps to keep the cost per painting lower for me. I do have some paper that comes in a block (my Arches paper for instance), but since I like to work on a smaller scale than the block will allow, I usually remover the paper from the block, cut it to the size I want and then paint. I usually work on a flat surface, but neck, shoulder and back issues have me rethinking my workspace and there may very soon be a day when I work on a tilted surface such as a drafting table (but I'm still working on figuring this out). I think Zentangles are so pretty!!! But, I don't tend to use them all that much in my work. This could change in the future, you never know! Thank you so much for making the time to connect with me! Firstly thank you for this beautiful tutorial. I did a "master copy" of this whimsical abstract landscape just to get the idea for the intuitive process, water color and pen work. I am an oil painter and have no clue about the power of water color and these techniques. I am very grateful to have somehow stumbled onto youtube videos as I struggle with the same issues you mentioned. Thx again.
PS- i looked up Kramer and I am having hard time finding a way to buy. Any suggestions?

I'm not sure where you are located - Kremer pigments are available in North America and parts of Europe. I don't work with Kremer so unfortunately, I'm not sure where else they might sell their products. (I'm just going by what their website shows.) A great substitute for Star Gold is 24K Merck Gold by CSY Art Gallery. They may be more widely available and they make many other really nice iridescent watercolor sets ☺️ I hope this helps!
I love this! where did you get the plexiglass board you are using to secure the paper to?
Hi Katie ❤️ Thank you ☺️ The plexiglass was actually from an old foyer window in my house. My husband cut it to size for me. I love how rigid it is, but sometimes it can be a challenge to control the glare from my overhead lights while I'm filming. I have seen other people use tempered glass cutting boards to do the same thing and I'm guessing a smooth surface plastic cutting board might also work well. I hope this helps!
