- Capture the Mood of France and paint this little sketch of a row of typical French shops. Add your own whimsical touches like I did, by putting in animals, people and features like bikes and scooters - the sky’s the limit! Keep the painting free and easy by painting the main parts first, once you’ve sketched the outlines, and then finish off with details using brush pens and a Tombow calligraphy pen. Such fun!

Love painting with you so fun
Diane, everything about this tutorial is charming. I love when you mentioned having gardens in front of houses or shops. For years now, although I live in a small cottage, I have enjoyed a front yard garden where I plant tomatoes, zucchini, carrots, herbs, and lots of flowers. My sunflowers are now towering over me at 10 feet high and growing. The birds love it all and so do the neighbors. It began because the sun was far better in my front yard than my backyard, and now, it has evolved to a great conversation piece offering a warm and welcoming place to gather. This painting is so vibrant and happy and I love the way you sketched out the bistro table and lamp on the side of the building. I've learned a lot about sketching and painting from you, and what I love, is that I continue to learn with each one of your tutorials. When I watched you sketch the table, I thought to myself, wow....Diane used only lines (which I can do) and created a whimsical bistro table. Same thing for the lamp. I'm learning that drawing really is about connecting various shapes. Thank you for a fun morning chat, as always. xo
Yay! ❤
I came from from a two month trip to Croatia to visit my mother-in-law. Land is used for gardens in the front yard or anywhere there is enough sun to grow plants. In my Maryland neighborhood a vegetable garden was planted in the front/side yard. The neighbors didn’t like having a garden next to the street - but it didn’t bother me after spending time in Croatia.
@@lizbogovich3822 The Croatia gardens sound lovely.I love utilizing as much garden space as possible. One can never get too many flowers or plants :) Thank you for sharing your story.
We had to pull out a large area of grass this year and decided to plant a garden. Although we don’t have any experience my husband is growing corn tomatoes, onions, zucchini and yellow squash, bell peppers, green beans, carrots and strawberries! It’s not a lot of each but we are having fun. It’s just off the patio so it’s the first thing you see! Who cares. Everyone is amazed
@@denisezimmer5886 How fun! What a great view to look out to every morning!
Yes, that is why I started drawing and painting not so long ago…because of all the chaos and lies from the media that is pushed on us. Art is great therapy. Thank you Diane for sharing your art. I love watercolor painting and I’m learning a lot from you. I also paint rocks with acrylic paints and give them all away. It’s my way of giving out a bit of joy to others. ♥️
I love how you share your thought process of planning your painting with us. Such a fun little scene. Thank you❤
Thingy-what’s-its!!! Lol! 😂I love-thingy-what’s its!!! 😍
Me too, Denise…..definitely my language, too….it’s great to hear Diane saying the same things 😂🤗
Delightful!
💗 🐩🌿🌼🌻🌷🌳🚃
Love the "flow" of this process!!! I could hear the phrase "no worries" in my head as I watched you ❣️👍
This is so much fun!
Love it soooo much!!
Love this ❤❤❤❤❤
Love to paint whimsical villages! So much fun.
Lov`e it
More tutorials like this with buildings! Love it! I love the thick and thin lines of the pen work. Please do another imaginary neighborhood tutorial like this one!!
This is another really fun one! ❤
I love this and in response to all the rubbish we are getting from media and those who think they are in charge I say to them I Do my art and they cannot take my spirit from me. Believe in ourselves for sure. 😊
Charming light hearted composition ….thanks for this
Diane, you have the most fun, yet instructional videos. I love painting with your videos. I love that it’s forgiving and whimsical. I took my first art classes from a local Chinese artist over 60 years ago but it never went any further. About 4 years ago my daughter introduced me to instructional painting videos in acrylics and I’ve really enjoyed taking them and growing as an artist. But I wanted to also use watercolors for fun. Your vide are my favorites. Thank you for sharing your talents with us . By the way you have ruined my vision of France!!!😅
Sorry about that Mimi! Don’t listen to me, I live in Brittany and it’s very different elsewhere in this very diverse country! So glad you’re enjoying the videos and having fun picking up watercolor!
Really love this ❤❤❤❤
Fun!
Love this! ❤️
Your little town is adorable!!!!! You make things look so easy i.e. the pots for your flowers…..I would over think the pots thinking I had to make them realistic and look at your pots!!!! So cute! I usually don’t try to paint/sketch “scenes” because I over think details etc😮. Yours are just wonderful! Thank you for being you…..❤️
Thank you so much! I’m so glad you enjoyed it - it was a lot of fun and very easy to do - I hope you enjoy doing it too! More like this to come soon!❤️
I've been in a rut. This painting is is hopefully getting me out of that rut and painting again. I love the pastel colors and the pen and ink. Since I found out my grandmother's family came from France. I'm loving all the old French villages.
WOW You can always tell when you use the Kurtake palette; the colors are so vibrant! I LOVE LOVE LOVE when you do cute houses and buildings and towns!! Thank You!
Thank you Diane, I always enjoy your adventures in art and your conversations with what your doing snd thinking. Keeping it simple is so good.
Thanks Jennie, appreciate your kind thoughts xxx
This is adorable. Would love to see more of these.
I would like to live in that street. Beautiful. Thank you
You made my day. Thank you.
My pleasure!
Love this, will definitely try it.
I think this is like Honfleur ? It's a lovely small city with buildings like that. This is so lovely. I gonna try..
Your teaching style is so fun! I ❤ it all.
Morning been on holiday, catching up on your videos .Thank u. I definitely agree with your thoughts on negativity 😊
Welcome back! Hope you had a lovely time xx
I had a go! Lost myself in it fun! Looks like a kiddies drawing & I like it! I’m alsonot an AI friend! Thanks!
Diane, I had so much fun painting this French Street Scene with you! I enjoyed your video and my finished product. Thank you!
You are so welcome!
Wow!!!! I had so much fun doing this drawing❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️Thankyou Diane.
Brilliant and charming !
You’re so right. We’re surrounded by lies and negativity. I also take solace in my art.
Your videos make me laugh and smile. Thank you for your authenticity and inspiration.
You are so welcome Delphine!
I love how this turned out! Thanks for sharing 😊
You are so welcome!
Diane, this was such a fun project to paint along with! Thank you SO MUCH! Love hearing you go about this and that…feels like we’re sitting across from one another as we paint!🥰
This is adorable 😍
Thanks Colette!
I just love this type of art work.....whimsical is what I'm wanting (and loose florals) to do but with 2 bum shoulders and don't like to sketch to begin with it's tiring but I'm not giving up if I have to learn to use my knees lol!😀 Thanks so much sharing these delightful watercolor pictures.
Magnificent! It transported me to France for a half hour. Thank you!
Wonderful!
Tack!
Super! Thanks so much for your generosity xxx
I liket the little red flags in the end! So festive :)
Very cute
Thank you! 😊
Very pretty, love your channel
Thank you so much!
Hello, Diane, your paintings are relaxing and happy. Thanks!
Glad you like them!
This is so cute. I love the colors!
Thank you! 😊
Your videos are a source of inspiration and motivation for aspiring artists like myself. Thank you for sharing your talent with the world.
You are so welcome!
Definitely a mystery😂 Thank you for your tutorials. I always enjoy you!
Glad you like them!
I really like ink and watercolor. It just adds so much 😅 the painting.
Thank you so much 😀
Such a charming scene! You make us all feel brilliant that we all have such wonderful imaginations! That’s why we love you! This reminds me of the illustrations in the Madeline book. So French! I love it. I love everything about this especially the finish pen work that brings it all together. ❤️
Wow, thank you Denise! I wish France was really that pretty but imagination is good at a pinch! Thanks so much for your lovely comment!
I love this beautiful little French town painting ❤. I think I should look up my fotos from my holidays in Bretagne and paint a scene for my 2024 calendar 😊. For my 2023 calender I painted your pelican and seagull for June and the 3 cats in plant pots for September. Greetings from Germany, Dagmar
Hi Dagmar, what a good idea! I should remember about the calendar and start preparing the paintings in advance for the months. Thanks for the reminder and have fun with this one!
I love this, Diane! I've recently become obsessed with urban watercolour sketching, antique shop fronts, and old country houses so I really enjoyed watching this one. Thank you. ❤
Such a charming picture and painting session. Thank you Diane!
You are so welcome!
Oh, I am not sure to understand well, French people do like beautiful houses too! Different ways to look like "nothing on earth" you know ...I am French of course. Thank you for your videos, it is very useful to me. have a nice day.
A woman stucked in a concrete flat, with a beautiful sight though, in the countryside of Drôme).
Oh, thank you for the insight on paper. Totally agree on being resistance to AI with our art! I love this little stretch of country shops.
You are so welcome!
Diane, you never fail to put a smile on my face and warmth in my heart with your talking and lovely art. Great inspiration thank you.
You are so welcome Elmarie, I‘m so glad you enjoy the videos and thank you for your kind support xxx
This is one of my favorites! Thank you for another great tutorial. You are so inspiring
Oh thank you! I’m going to paint the neighborhood I remember when little.
That’s a great idea Rebecca and I think I might take that one up!
As a complete beginner, your style & tutorial make this doable for me - I will give it a shot! Thank you for yet another fabulous tutorial & sketch.
PS. We generally always have grass out the front of our houses in Australia :)
Oh yes, of course, we used to have it in front of lots of houses in England but so many people have paved their gardens to park cars on! So ugly and hot!
Very cute and whimsical!❤
Another awesome video!! Thank you!!
Really enjoyed this, very quirky but lovely thank you Dianne!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love this style of painting plus I've had some success too
This is so nice! Thank you for sharing your talent!
Thank you so much!
Congratulations you have joined me ,I now paint on hot press paper, my watercolour friends almost faint in horror and I paint flat not raised which is frowned upon ,I don't care,I just blame you 😂 x
Wonderful! I’m very happy to be blamed if it makes you happier Annie!
@@DianeAntoneStudio 🤣 Bless you , you have to live on the edge sometimes haha xx
wonderful little example inspiration for so many more ..thank you for sharing
Thanks for watching!
I absolutely love your carefree style - both with the painting, sketching, and the commentary! These colorful scenes with the houses or buildings are really attracting me recently; I haven't attempted one just yet. This inspires me!
I have never been to France (or Europe, for that matter). In the states there are definitely paved-over, concrete jungle areas, but there are also "old town" areas in many cities, especially the smaller ones, where one might find quaint boutiques, cafés, shops and bistros that might be homes with storefronts or homes that have been converted, and these will have gardens in front. They are always so enjoyable and relaxing to peruse!
Thank you for this!!
Really enjoyed this tutorial. It is very relaxing and I am learning so much. Thanks for helping me to do so I am still in the hospital. I'm going to be Dischargedon the 19th. Lord Willing, and hopefully, I can get to my art studio and have some more things to paint with. However, I have some to paint with. And so I'm not totally Having😊. Withdraw LO LLO😊 L.
Hi Diana, hope you are making progress and will be home soon. It must be very frustrating stuck in the hospital. Sending up prayers for you and love from us both xxx
This is such a relatively simple and stress free little scene but it’s so blooming cute! I can just imagine strolling along to collect a baguette for lunch and stopping for tea and a cake before heading home! Thanks Diane …. It’s been great to watch you paint something fun and different X
Exactly Wendy, the way France should be! I remember those days too!
I love this street scene! ❤
Merci ce tutoriel est vraiment intéressant et le résultat est charmant. Thank you from Canada
Cute!! I like it!! It’s different!'💕
That looked fun. I’m going to give it a try. Thank you so much.
Have fun!
Your views on untruths, AI, etc. is so true. Our societal foundation based on reality, truth and integrity are being undermined, leaving people, especially younger ones, with no anchor and so causing uncertainty, confusion and mistrust. Certainly not a positive way forward for our world.
It is very worrying, isn’t it … Question is what to do…
Oh so charming Diane!! I love your tutorials! Not only for the great art lessons, but for your chats!! I love your sense of humor!!!
Thank you so much!
Lovely painting, thank you. ❤
I love this! It'll be a lovely picture for our dining room wall, if i can do a good job of it!! You're so good with the pen i can only dream about emulating you!!
Thank you for this lovely tutorial, Diane.
Love Mel in Devon 🍰🌻
You can do it!
Thanks! I just did this one. Got a lot out of it. Finally maybe I'm using enough water. Not using enough water is a sticking point for me. Thanks again!
Excellent! It’s all about practice x Glad you’re getting through the water crisis!
This is so nice! I watched it but need to buy more watercolor paper today and work on it.
This picture just delights me so much! It is simple, sweet, peaceful. It seems a street I would want to visit often, if not everyday. Lovely!
Thank you very much!
Another great one Diane. 👍👍
What a fun painting! I’ll have to give it a try.
I really like this tutorial. thank you for sharing
You are so welcome!
Absolutely love this 💖
Thanks so much ❤️
I absolutely love this tutorial. I need a painting in one of my freshly painted rooms. This is just the ONE! As always, Diane, you inspire me to paint. Thank you !
You are so welcome! I wish I had a freshly painted room!
I recently took a watercolor pencil class and we used a heavy weight mixed media paper and it was fantastic and inexpensive. It was Canson artist series.
Yes, I have recommended that paper, I use it in many videos!
Loved this tutorial! Subscribed and sgned up for the newsletter. Thanks so much!
Thanks so much, really appreciate your support!
This is a happy painting. I love the pastel colors. I've been watching videos on the French Riviera and videos of old France. The buildings were pastel colors with beautiful colored shutters. This reminds me of the buildings. I in love with the old French villages.
Thanks a lot Patricia, thanks very much for sharing! I think I might go and have a look at some of those videos too - do you have any suggestions? I think when I think of France, those are the kinds of images I have in my mind, going back to the days when we used to bring the children here when they were small on holiday and France was something special and different and beautiful. Which is the way I want to remember it and to depict it in my paintings. With grass in front of the buildings!
Beautiful
Love this one - really fresh and jolly. Definitely want you to stay! Here and on Patreon - today's two girls with the hosepipe was awfully challenging!!!! 🤗❤️
Ilfracombe has a small number of shops/cafes/hotels with gardens Infront of them, just down from where the Pavillion used to be going towards the pier. I don't know if you visited North Devon when you were in Exeter. Your painting took me straight back to my childhood in North Devon lol.
Yes, I know north Devon slightly and have been there several times. I’m sure things have changes and I heard that the towns had been gentrified recently… but Ilfracombe has a very pretty setting x
Hi Diane, I bought the 24 set of Kuretake paints you recommended and I love them. And you are so right about forgetting the world for a while when painting. Sometimes I think the madness is never ending ❤
Glad you like them! Therapy paints!
I so enjoyed watching this, Diane. My husband was in the kitchen making breakfast, heard your comments, and said: "That woman is brilliant!" "It's French Diane!" I bellowed. "Ah haaaa..." was his response. Like me, he loves your videos and commentaries! That said, this is a happy little painting and even I can do it, control freak that I am. Can't thank you enough for your gifts, Diane. You're so generous. And now that my sweet hubs is once more gainfully employed, I can show you my gratitude in better ways. As always, LOVED your "ramblings," as I learn so much. Glad the weather is cooperating too! Happy Wednesday to you and Tamsin. :) xx Fanna
Hi Fanna and thanks so much for your lovely comments! Am I really brilliant? I wonder what I said to make that happen! Glad to hear that your hubby is “gainfully employed” (hope it’s legal!!!!) but please don’t think you need make any contribution other than your lovely comments, which are so helpful for the channel’s continued success! Hope you have fun doing this one, sending love to you both!
@@DianeAntoneStudio My husband reads manuals for pleasure, I paint, and he typically hears my videos when I play them on YT. He's especially fond of yours, and particularly loved your comments about "lies and lying" during this tutorial. He loathes dishonesty, especially public or political, and hence, applauded you from our busy little morning kitchen. And he's not alone in his enjoyment of your comments, especially the more outspoken ones, I am too, as I'm sure gobs and gobs of your followers are. We've all had enough untruths (I also read Marianne Williamson's ..."A Course in Miracles"--met her, hugged her, had a long, tearful conversation with her as she signed her first book here in Denver), and welcome some semblance of sanity once more. (pardon my alliteration). But I digress. Thank you for loving all of your followers' comments. You are beloved hoot, Diane! Spending time painting with you and all of your animals is the most relaxing and joyful hour or so I spend each day. Many thanks for your daily gifts tool of us. xx Fanna (and her husband Frank in this one)
Hi Fanna, just wanted to reply to this comment of yours from a month ago and I hope you see this today! I am putting a little video up today in which I tell the truth about the way I feel at the moment in this shocking AI world that we have been put in, and I wanted to warn you that it will be different from what I normally do. I hope you find it interesting, I know you will understand why I feel the need to do this. It’s not about me, it’s about the way we are being used and I want to express my feelings on the platform which is causing me so much sadness (as well as joy!) Hope you and Frank are well, and that he’s found a nice manual to read, he sounds like my husband who is an engineer through and through and has only ever read one book, Call of the Wild, but has read many many manuals! Love from Diane xxx
I love watercolor and sketch doodles!! So fun. Do more of these. 😊
Thank you! Will do!
I love the buildings and towns and animals..., a nice change from all the flowers 😅
I love everything about this. So colorful and free. I'm working on mine and will post later.
Wow. You make it look so easy! I will “have a go at this”!
You can do it Lizzi, I’m sure of it!
I’m so excited my art nouveau pallet came today! After I try this one, I’m going back to your videos with this pallet and see if I love my art as much as I love yours! Cheers!
Hope you enjoy it Lisa, those paints really help the creative juices to flow!
