Gary Moore did not pester Peter Green for the guitar, it was Peter who said to Gary that he wanted the guitar to have a good home, and he suggested Gary buy it. Both Peter Green and Gary Moore have recounted the story many times over the years. Gary couldn’t believe it and told Peter that he could never afford that guitar, Peter told Gary to sell his best guitar ( a Gibson SG ) and give him whatever he got for it, that was Peter’s way, he also loved Gary Moore’s playing and got Gary his first record contract. “ Under the wings of a man they call Green I found freedom” excerpt from ‘BUSINESS AS USUAL’ by Gary Moore.

I saw that guitar up close a few times between 1968 and 1970 when it still had a strong burst. Seeing Peter Green from a few feet away changed me forever. He was beyond any other guitarist I ever saw.

Don't know why you all argue over something no one really knows for sure 100% except Gary and Peter, the guy was a fuck'n legend on a guitar, got screwed over, had to part with his gems and probably died a broken hearted man, seems ironic for a killer blues guitarist, R.I.P Gary, you are a life long inspiration for years to come, one of the greats.
There is no argument, Gary told the story himself in the liner notes on "Blues For Greeny". It was Peter's suggestion that Gary buy the guitar.
Gary got jabbed by the courts. It's a shame that Gary's guitars weren't his till his death. Unfortunately, pure talent doesn't always come out on top.

Musical copyright is a goldmine for slimy lawyers because they change the premise of the case from whether genuinely original material can be proven to have been copied to just whether the tunes sound alike. A very lucrative form of bait and switch.
Wonder if it caused him to give up in a way and drink so much. It would have been extremely bitter and disappointing end to his career

Hi! I’ve been lucky enough to work as a drum tech off and on for Joe Bonamassa since 2011. He played Greeny at Royal Albert for the second shoot, it was my understanding that Moore used it as collateral for a 6 figure loan, and then passed away before payback (I think you’re correct 300k). I heard that his family then approached the gentleman to pay off the loan but he refused and wanted more than 1M because now it was infamous with Gary’s passing. Joe played it at RA to kind of “cleanse” it from the dirty financial mojo. Main thing here is as far as I know, it was collateral for a loan and ended up in the middle of nefarious greed. I’m glad Mr. Hammett has it now, he seems to have pure heart for it.

Gary's peacefully at rest. All of life's troubles were left here. The legend of all of his guitars will live on. His playing lives on and inspires guitar players for decades to come. For those of us who followed GM in real time-were mesmerized with what he made. He was imperfect, as we all are. All of the guitar greats stand alone on common ground to them. As they pass on, they are collected in heaven above, and collaborating still making music amongst each other. May they rest in peace, and may we all eventually be added to heavens collection as we ourselves pass. RIP GM.
Back as a teenager I returned home eagerly with my brand spanking new copy of Still Got The Blues and of course headed straight to my room to play it. My mum was ironing in the next room and after the title track had finished she shouted out "Oooh I liked that last one. But I thought it was going to be Lionel Richie's Hello". I've never been able to listen to that track ever since without my mother's comments ringing in the back of my mind. A lot of friends I've mentioned it to down the years have gone "Oh yeah... I see what she's saying..."

The guy still had the blues his whole life. So sad to see so many great players barely make ends meet, having to live among a pack a vultures known as the "music industry".
Kirk Hammet owns it now. I know he gets a lot of shit, but it still gets played live and people get to hear it.
At least it's not behind a glass in some musuem and hopefully it will pass on to more great guitarist.

It's great. He uses it consistently when they play fade to black, and it sounds as good as they have ever played. You can hear every note perfect when Kirk plays "Greeny". The outro solo is magic

I dont know if this is to the credit of the late, and undeniably great, Gary Moore, but I am a huge fan, and this is honestly the FIRST and ONLY time I have ever heard about the court case. We all know that it isn't ripped, but goddamn, how sad of a story, and disgrace of his legacy. RIP GARY MOORE

Ridiculous, there was one turn of a phrase that sounded similar. Gary's song was firmly based in blues changes, while the Jud's tune was a jazz fusion thing with one blues interval. He was robbed.
"Hendrix played it, Rory played it, ... ... i played it!" - Gary said. True. But above any of them, Peter breathe most beautiful soul in it and played most beautiful tones and melodies off that 1959 burst Les Paul... Period ;).

@@fu6223 This was in the 60s. Hendrix played it in a jam. I don't know if you're aware. But Fleetwood Mac used to be a killer blues band before The Munich incident that ruined his brain and life. Peter played with BB King, Jimi, Jeff Beck and everyone else in the UK. Jimi loved Peter because he replaced Eric Clapton in The blues breakers as a kid and no one cared. This was literally when people used to paint Clapton is God on walls lol. Also the magnet was flipped in one of the humbuckers. So in the middle position it sounded out of phase. His tone was insane. Everyone wanted to buy or play it. Black Magic woman is actually a Peter Green song too. Santana covered it after Peter had that bad acid trip he never recovered from in 1970. Peter from 66 to 70 is definitely top 5. He went years without playing and lost the magic after that. The 1st Orange amp was made for him as well. And Jimi played that too. Sorry to ramble but just wanted to give some background as to how Hendrix would have played that guitar.
Regarding plagiarism i dont buy that . However, everyone knows that parisien walkways is jazz standard Blue Bosa played on sax by dexter gordon and many others. Its more likely that this had been floating around his head since childhood, just waiting for an invitation from the fingers! Gary moore was everything a legendary guitarist should be: fiery, mysterious, musically aggressive and competitive to the end
I love anything to do with Greeny - he inspired me to learn guitar.
What's interesting is his casual attitude to letting go of that instrument in the first place..!?
I don’t think that Gary needed to copy anyone’s work. Gary was an innovator with more talent and creativity than the German band had in their whole outfit. Artists frequently create works that have a resemblance, which is completely different than stealing or copying. Courts do not have the knowledge or discernment to determine what actually transpires in these cases and they shouldn’t allow frivolous lawsuits to ruin an artist’s life or threaten his livelihood.
It must have been heartbreaking for Gary to part with that guitar. Too bad there wasn’t online crowdfunding then; I would have gladly chipped in to see Gary keep his beloved guitar.

Need and doing so is different thing. Music history is full of similar stories, even with say "more talented people" (=famous). Like Ritchie Blackmore and Jimmy Page, copying and recycling other musicians/composers ideas in away that is just more than being influenced by some sounds, but clearly stealing riffs and melodies. At least Blackmore has been more honest about it or in those cases where it has been so obvious. One I spotted, Rainbow - Temple of the King, has melody from Rimsky Korsakov Scheherazad. But anyhow, Moore was amazing musician/guitarist whatever the case here =)

@@TheGuitarShow Agreed. I wish the German court had considered damages. Think about it: Judds Gallery had the song for YEARS and did nothing with it. Wasn't pressed onto LP for 10 years, If I understood correctly. So what did they loose? NOTHING. They wouldn't/couldnt get that song to sell. They had little interest in promoting this cliche of chord and melody. Gary came along and put his magic into the chords,melody,recrding and performance. He pressed it, toured it and promoted it. He , by all that,imho, owned it. The Judge put him in a terrible position, and I think that did not serve justice at all.

Nordach and Still Got The Blues are both adaptations of Autumn Leaves. Gary did considerably better with it than the other band though I think!

There is similarity between the two songs, however, my feeling is that both leads are following the chord progression- which is actually Autumn Leaves. Gary got screwed.
All blues shares similar musical ideas. Soloing in aeolian etc, just variations on straight scale runs etc. They all do it. Where did it start, who knows and who cares. Blues is old traditional music. Gary was a great blues player, up there with best. He gave his life to music. Introduced the blues to a new generation. The only one being ripped off here was Gary. RIP

I hate when some people try to destroy a persons reputation with bullshit. Gary Moore did not copy them, that is why he was so confident and faced up in a German court, which had a German judge and a German band set to profit. It was a bitter pill for Gary and another nail in his coffin.
When the Narrator said that, despite his agreement to sell Peter's ' Greeny ' BACK to Peter should he want it, and Gary Moore's later statement that he would not... leads me to believe, had Gary made these remarks, he would be untrustworthy, at best...sooo ... anything is possible.

A falling Circle of Fifths (4ths...) starting on different chords gives you Autumn Leaves> Fly Me To The Moon> SGTB, Pictures Of The Moon, Parisienne Walkways.
If you noodle over them long enough you're going to come up with similar melodies. It's possible Gary heard it in Germany, sure.

I've noticed from this picture of the 'Greeny' that the strings are wound over the tail piece, not through it. I've heard it can produce more susstain.

So sad to hear that Gary, like so many legendary musicians, died poor despite having entertained millions and sold millions of records. And we wonder why Gary was a kinda brusque guy with a sometimes abrasive personality. He had to have known he was the best in the world at what he did . . playing Blues-Rock better than any man alive! How frustrating to be not recognised as such by fans of pop bands like U2, from his own country!
It seemed that every project he did was met with cold disdain by the completely unforgiving and openly hostile music press. I mean, Gary released an album called A Different Beat, in which he played Blues songs with a hip hop style nite-club beat. The press savaged that album, yet when Jeff Beck did the exact same thing years later he was hailed as a visionary!!
Gary and I wrote to each other on MySpace back in the day and he was a man of few words. I just accepted that. I'll never say a bad word about Gary and I won't accept criticism of him either. Walk a mile in his shoes if you dare . . and if you can!!
@Boony Tooty . . Says you? Gary quit Thin Lizzy because he couldn't work with the guys and their drug abuse. Gary an alcoholic? I think not. He did his best to get healthy and stay that way . . out riding his pushbike and keeping as fit as a touring musician can keep themselves. I will say though, that during his final year of life he did look particularly unwell. It was like he'd given up on him self physically. Right up to the end though, he could still play up to the best he'd ever been. Gary kept a lot of things inside, being the loner that he was. Who knows how long he knew that he had problems, yet he still toured relentlessly. That's the way of the Bluesman. Die on the job. When my time comes I hope they find me dead in my car on the way home from a gig.

If Gary heard it in the 70's, possibly he remembered the melody ( involuntarily as a musician absorbing music that attracted him ).
Personally, having seen Gary Moore play, its tragic that injury and a court case led to this.
He was a gift.
An iconic guitar for sure, just a shame that Peter didnt profit more from it considering its worth is mainly down to his ownership of the instrument.
The riff is so classic ... I mean, I'm sure , if we look for it we can find it as a transition, or a small anonymous part of a greater piece. It's like some blues turnaround. There shouldn't be no damned copyright about it. Why didn't they claim that parisian walkways was copied too ? because it's like the reverse riff so ... poor Gary Moore. And he kept discreet about these problems. I remember reading an interview in Guitar Player couple of months before he passed, he never mentioned it. RIP, play blue with the angels.
You could also say that Parisian Walkways is like a slowed down version of Blue Bossa. It doesn't really matter, Gary was a fabulous player and its sad he had to sell his guitars. RIP
Gary Moore sold the Peter Green Les Paul because he fell in love with an Epiphone Les Paul Studio. Not just any Epiphone Les Paul Studio, a made in Korea model.
john deaux there is something pure about Peter Green. It’s a romantic notion but if you look at the way he lived his life then and now there wasn’t much yearning for money. It was about music. Even in his band he had 2 other guitar players that he gave pretty much equal time. One could say it’s a tragedy but he still lives and plays music. The value of that Les Paul is artificial but the value of Peter Green is real. Beauty where there was none.

I bought a honeyburst Standard in 1998 because of Peter. I promptly named the guitar 'Peter Green'.
The strap on my guitar actually has a bit of a connection to Peter Green as it is a strap once owned by John Mayall. A friend of my father got it from him after a gig in New Orleans in the early 1970's and later gave it to me. (True Story.)

These music copyright cases although this was an early one and the recent high profile cases make copyrighting music increasingly more ridiculous as a way of protecting art. Ultimately don't think anyone listen toJuds Gallery and go wow. Gary was a legend in my mind a great great player and having seen him a few times over the years did not need to plagiarise some hick German group. But as with many guitar players guitar runs are often based around scale around the melody.

That progression is just a diatonic cycle of fourths with minor alterations: II V I IV (III7 or VII7 - same tritone) VI. There are probably many thousands of tunes that use a similar progression, going back centuries.

i just listened to the song Nordrach of the band Jud's gallery, it's similar but not all the same notes and when the solo /melody changed , it's logic that the chords also changed and maybe the chords are similar but it happens in music, coincidences ....
A very revered roadie in the biz told us a wholly different tale of how the guitar came into Garys ownership and that was in the mid eighties

Would’ve loved to hear Gary and Terry Kath jam. Terry left us way to early. Gary will always be in my top 10.
To play the blues, you have to live the blues. In mid September 1970, (after leaving FM at the end of May), Peter flys to the states for a two month visit. On the weekend of October 23,24 he flys to Los Angeles to see Gary Moore opening with his band Skid Row for a weekend at the Whisky A Go Go. Also, on October 7, he's glad to join the Allman Brothers on stage at the Warehouse in New Orleans, and jam with Duane. Mid November he's back in London. Watch out for those hellhounds on your trail.
The Nordrach tune is similar in chords structure and tempo, much dissimilar in the melody.
My guess is that even if 1974 recording year is genuine, Gary's tune 17 years later is just an unintentional unfortunate coincidence. My feeling is that such plagiarism cases should be resolved by arbitration with a panel of independent knowledgeable musical peers and not in nationally biased courts.

Usa Vintage guitar mag pulled Gary up on his intro using " Manic depression " on one of his originals,it was patently blatantly Manic depression. He just skirted around it like he did with the intro to "Need your love so bad" on another "original " not to mention " Parisienne walkways " reportedly being not wholly dissimilar to another piece ,it seems the maestro had a penchant for borrowing well known pieces of other people's music ad hoc and to his ultimate detriment it came on top in the end ,costing him dearly financially and on a personal level to such a degree his lifelong drinking problem was exacerbated resulting in self medicating at the worst level ,understandably so ,the intensity of the full extent of the blow dealt to him in the foreign court,which was reportedly biased in the extreme ,and albeit it may very well have been a case of "unintentional" plagiarism, granting the maestro the full benefit of the doubt wasn't on the cards in that setting .He didn't stand a chance. But the aforementioned " Manic depression/ Need your love so bad/ etc were blatant plagiarism .
His management let him down in that area,they should've had his back.
Warned him off .

I was just thinking very unfortunate that Gary had to sell that guitar but I can totally understand needing the cash and having to sell a prized possession guitar to pay off debts. I personally have been in that situation before and it literally hurt mentally to have to sell my gibson.. but realistically I bet Gary Moore probably got low balled when he sold that guitar especially if he was that desperate for money. I bet he didn't get nowhere near $750k. Of all the guitarsist in the world to end up with that guitar, I would've never thought Kirk would be the one but hes got enough money to buy multiple greenys. I like the fact that he bought it as a fan and still plays it too. I can't stand when people blow so much money on a les paul but then never play it and just have it sitting away like a museum piece. It's meant to be played!
The ‘nordrack’ track is terrible!! ‘IF’ Gary had channeled this tune into his own, believe me he done the world a favor! And the same applies to that Stairway to Heaven Jimmy Page court case. R.I.P. Gary Moore.

Here's another little story my very close friend backstage with Thin Lizzy, the Lizzy after Gary had left, he was sat there with Brian D and Scott G warming up before the gig!! Security came in and said "Hey Gary Moore is outside".. Scott turns and says.. "DO NOT LET HIM IN HERE!!" true.

I say this with a confused and heavy heart and a Moore/Lizzy fan. I have been a full time musician all my life. I listened to the German track, I heard some "hint" of the riff near the start, I listened as I thought the song was fading out (wicked drumming by the way), then my musical jaw dropped, song came back to life with a solo very similar to the song in question. Thank you for you work. M.

@@Kreln1221 Yes all music should go through a 'Sonic Fingerprint Identity Filter' which will automatically send a bill of legal rights to the perpertrator of said music and said owner of said copy should be legally bound over in court and brought to measure with either a hefty fine or imprisnment or both, which will teach them a lesson. All copies of said ripoff should be taken off the shelves and destroyed, and anyone caught listening to it should also be fined or sent to prison.

It is pretty funny that one of the most iconic museum worthy Gibson Les Pauls, Greeny, was purchased by a great guitarist, and has had more Metallica riffs played on it than your average Epiphone floor model in guitar center.

Yep, sound like Gary was influenced by the Jud's Gallery instrumental. The mood swings are the same. Gary's solo is head and shoulders above the German original, but that unfortunately does not count in copyright.

Kirk Hammet recently purchased this guitar for an undisclosed amount, and recorded with it on the recent Peter Green tribute album. I believe he can be seen playing it in a video for the release.

Still Got The Blues and Parisienne Walkways melodies are built on 'Voice Leading' through the the Cycle of 5ths progression. The German guitarist does a similar thing it's a generic sequence centuries old. I'd say Gary had no case to answer whatsoever. He was an endlessly creative guitarist who didn't need to ripoff some forgotten German prog outfit.

Outside of the main riff of a song I had no idea that guitar parts, solos etc - or any incidental musical parts of a song for that matter - were copyrightable...Chuck Berry's estate is owed a hell of a lot of money...
I guess its a significant part of the melody and was deem intergral to the song. I agree about Chuck Berry! Although Chuck stole a lot from his piano player.

I find it hard to believe that Gary would've not sold it back to Peter had he asked for it. Gary's principals were quite strong and he knew Peter very well. It would seem out of character for him to do otherwise. Chinese whispers here I think. I mean he even wrote that song about Peter (Jumping At Shadows) showing that he had deep feelings for him.

He did not pester Peter Green for the guitar. Peter wanted him to have the guitar. He said I wanted it to have a good home and I believe Peter said it sounded better in Gary's hands. I believe the guitar was first loaned to Gary by Peter and thex sold .

Wow so many experts in the comment section lol, it's quite amazing how many people know the TRUTH.
This is not the story reported even in his biography. Gary had injured his hand and got to cancel a whole tour, and as tĥe insurance estimation was that his condition was prior to the tour, Gary had to assume all the costs, and his situation was not that great after two weak albums that failed to chart.
Gary still used Greeny partly on his records by the time, but he was not outing it in the live situation anymore, preferring Stripe. Selling Greeny was the rational and easy way of getting away with the financial crisis.

I suggest you speak to Rick Zsigmund who will tell you the whole story about how Winfield told Moore that the guitar was not for him and going to a collector. He didnt want Winfield to have it . Also when I spoke to Gary the other reason was school fees as he said.. The price was about £300K AFAIK..

Not sure what you mean by the SGTB 'riff', its a set of chords and a melody, I wouldn't describe it as a 'riff' exactly. The lawsuit for SGTB was ridiculous and should never have got to court. It's a generic cycle of 4ths chord sequence derived from classical music and most famously used in the standard Autumn Leaves. The melody is just a product of 'voice leading' through the chords picking out chord tones. Lionel Richie didn't sue because he understands this and besides Gary could have claimed he stole it in turn from Parisienne Walkways. A variation on the chord sequence was also used in The Loner, Gary made this chord sequence very much his. He was a great composer, improviser, writer any 'borrowings' were due to the nature of 'classic' cadences not some need to appropriate or 'steal'.

By the end of the day it seems that Stripe (the still got the blues guitar) was better than Greeny and that is why Gary Moore kept that one.A food for thought for people who idolise guitars.

I never knew this had happened to Gary Moore. He had taken the progressions of a few traditional jazz standards once or twice and rearranged them into his own songs. Still Got The Blues is a rearrangement of Autumn Leaves, as is Nordrach. There's nothing wrong with that, you can't copyright a chord progression.
In this case though, Jud's Gallery got there first. I saw Gary Moore live, he was a genuine artist and performer and a superb guitarist. Still Got The Blues is a much tighter and more complete piece of music than the german one, they must have been delighted when it was a hit for Gary.
"Still Got The Blues" is basically the same chord progression from the song "Blue Bossa".

Peter Green and Gary Moore have both recounted the deal, so there is absolutely no honest reason to listen to hearsay.

Can anyone explain why the strings are wound over the top of the tailpiece in this video? Surely the break angle wll affect the tone and the less the angle the less vibration is transferred into the body of the instrument? Was it always like that when Green played it?
