  • Today I am comparing a lavalier microphone vs condenser microphone. The microphones are the RODE lavalier GO vs. RODE NT1. These microphones sound great but they are completely different. The RODE NT1 condenser mic has a richer cleaner sound, while the RODE Lav Go seems to have more bass. It’s also a little more muffled but is more versatile. Let me know which mic sounds better to you, the RODE Lavalier microphone or the RODE NT1 condenser microphone.

    I am comparing the RODE NT1 condenser mic and the RODE Lavalier mic in this video to see which one sounds better. Condenser microphones usually have better sound quality but are less versatile, while the opposite is true for lavalier microphones. I think both sound great on their own, but when compared directly against each other, I think I know which one I prefer, do you think it’s the RODE NT1 or the RODE Lavalier GO?

    Do you believe a more 'premium' lav mic like a Sennheiser MK2-II or Deity W.Lav Pro might have different outcomes? I'm quite a noob, but did notice the Deity site refers to the W.Lav Pro as 'Pre-Polarized Condenser'.
    Working on a setup that allows me to make talking head videos, while being in (different/changing) untreated rooms. Boomed shotgun mics give (way) too much echo IMO, but (many) lav mics are to poor in quality (i.e. lack dynamics/range etc).
    > Is there a balance to be found via i.e. one of these (or other) more premium lav mics you think?
    Ps. Love the video!

    • @TymekStolarz
      @TymekStolarz  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      if you want to record audio in different rooms, then lav is your only option. based on the side of the mic they will always have a lesser quality sound, but that would be in perfect conditions. a boom mic will always sound worse when its echoy. i have seen a few videos where they are using a lav, which is more expensive than the one i tested and seems to sound better. i have heard good things about senhieser mics so I don't think you could go wrong.

    Thanks for the video! If u want to really compare them as mics, the maybe put the lav mic on the mic stand in front of your mouth. The way you did this test the condenser mic gets an unfair advantage from being right in front of your mouth. However, given that lavs tend to be out on the shirt i can see why u did it. Would be intersting to compare them at the same distance and position.

    • @TymekStolarz
      @TymekStolarz  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you :) Yes i had thought about that. but i thought it made more sense to test how the mic would 99% of the time be used - on the collar. but for the condenser mic i did put it at arms length away for half of each test in each room, placing it way farther then the lav mic on my collar. i think the condenser mic still ends up sounding better.

      Good morning :) that’s a tough one because I think it completely depends on what you are recording. If I am recording at home and sitting infront of a camera I will ALWAYS prefer the nt1 because it’s significantly better audio quality in my opinion. But if i am shooting anything that requires me to move, or out in the field then it’s always going to be a lavalier go.

      And thank you for the kind words :) If they are just sitting / not moving around very much for most of the videos the k669 will probably have better audio quality over a lav mic, especially a cheaper one. Lavs biggest selling are really their versatility, or concealment if that’s important. But because of that they are usually lower in quality

    Like your video. I do a number of interviews where two people sit next to each other and talk. Uses 2 lavalier microphones for this. The challenge is that each microphone picks up the sound of both people. The person who has the relevant microphone mounted has a higher volume than the other. When both audio tracks are added to the video, the quality becomes poor due to this. The problem is called bleeding I think. Do you have any good advice on how to reduce this problem?

    • @TymekStolarz
      @TymekStolarz  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes i've heard of this issue. not something i've had to deal with myself yet but i think what i saw others do, is go into each individual track and bring down the volume on the microphone that has the bleeding audio on. Obviously this is super time consuming, and i would image there is a better way to do it, however i haven't looked into it much.

      It’s a really good question and it’s something I haven’t tested side by side before. I actually wrote in my videos idea notebook 2 days ago to do a comparison video. What I do know is that the wireless go mic actually sounds really good, but it’s obviously heavier and bulkier so it’s difficult to get it onto a person as nicely and inconspicuously as the lav. I have a feeling that the wireless go actually has slightly better quality over the lav go

    To see an actual live performance of how these various mics can perform WHEN BEING RECORDED TO A RECORDER,
    please see this shoot : th-cam.com/video/Hxp4F4L_1Qw/w-d-xo.html
    The 3 speakers on YOUR left have Lav mics on their Lapels/Tie, while the two speakers (Later 3, from 3.10 mins) on YOUR right do not have those.
    There are also times when the middle speaker had NO Mic with him, but his voice was well picked up by the Lav of the speaker to his right! :)
    BUT be cautioned, that all this talk was recorded into a Zoom H6 Recorder - And NOT directly into the Camera.
    For recording directly into the camera, I have somehow ALWAYS found too much of a background hiss with the Dynamic Cardioid mics.
    The following was the setup for the recording:
    Camera : Nikon Z6. Lighting : Only the ambient room light
    Recorder : Zoom H6
    Lav Mics (3) : Below 10$ Lav Mics (I am forgetting whether we used the battery power or were they used without it)
    Mic number 4 : Beta18
    Pop Filters were On on all mics.
    Note : No equalizer or any modification was done to the recordings, except volume equalization was done in post processing in the interview video.

    What microphone would you otherwise recommend for recording lectures on my ipad where noise cancellation is the the most important factor (as the room I would be recording in isn't acoustically treated) and I would want to avoid undergoing the hassle of using a powered usb hub and a lightning to OTG adapter for a USB microphone. Would a lapel mic cancel surrounding noise. Thanks in advance.

    • @TymekStolarz
      @TymekStolarz  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Are they being recorded live or is it more of a voice over situation? The closer you can get the mic to your mouth the less reflected sound it should pick up. The rode smartlav plus works straight to a 3.5 mm jack on mobile devices, apparently has the same quality as the lav mic in this video. I think it’s 120 bucks. The Deity d3 pro is a shotgun mic that will have richer sound and also has a 3.5 mm jack that works with cameras and mobile devices. I have a comparison video of those two on my channel as well so you can listen to the difference if you’d like, in acoustically treated and untreated rooms. If you are off camera and are just recording audio talking as close as you can to the mic will give you the best quality.

      @@TymekStolarz thank you for the reply. It is more of a voice over situation where the mic can be positioned as close to my mouth as required. Yea so even some cheaper microphone options might be really good if you can speak right in front of the microphone. You can also construct a makeshift vocal booth with pillows and cushions - but I would say that’s only necessary if you are really trying absolutely everything to maximize audio quality.

I don’t specifically remember which ones they were though. The one creator I recall forsure mention it is Annie Dube. I have no idea which video it was, and I can’t try to find it now as I’m out at work, but I recall her saying she’s tried a bunch of mics but the best one she always came back to was a cheaper amazon one. She has some echo in her audio but otherwise I’d say its decent quality audio.

    • @TymekStolarz
      @TymekStolarz  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think with lav mic’s specifically you want to try to get them as close to your mouth as possible. Because they are omni directional and you will likely have to increase the gain to have your voice be loud enough, they are going to be picking up a lot more of background noice from your computer, furnace, outside noise etc., vs. If it was closer to you and having the volume turned out. Your voice would sound the same but the background noise would be lower.
      At the same time you might as well give it a try and see how it sounds.

      So the condenser mic would probably overall be worse. Because it’s so sensitive it would pick up the background sound more easily. What your recording would sound better though but if there’s too much background noise it doesn’t really matter how good what your recording sounds. The lav will over all
      Have worse quality but not pick up as much background noise. And it’s not even that it’s bad or anything, especially when you aren’t comparing them directly the lav does still sound great

      You could also record audio with your USB mic on your computer, and then put the audio and video together in your editor. And yea there is definitely a lot of videos that people make with a lav. It will always be better than an internal mic on a camera or phone. It could be a 20$ Behringer XM8500, Electro-Voice RE20 for 450$, or anything in between. Dynamic mics are great cause you don't have to care about treating your room that much as you would need to with a condenser mic.
