Thanks for this! Definitely getting the AKG Pro Audio C214.
Quite surprised by the sound of the Blue Snowball, though.
And the Mini Directional Shotgun almost gave me cancer of the ear 😂

Thank you for review. You made me want to buy 214 now! Zoom sounds really good too. I didnt know it is a stereo mic before I watched your video.
One thing I wish to see in multiple mic reviews is to hear the mics one after another without talking in between.
If you have a second, could you please give me an advice: if I had money, should I invest in pair of 214 from the beginning or mono rec is enough for single instrument? I play the viola and I often record multiple parts of the viola by overdubbing. Thank you bro. Sending love from Seoul, Korea South.

Like we couldn't figure out how small the mic is from the size of his fingers, he has to use a penny and its not just a penny but a 1947 steel one.

I think the first mic attached to the cello was the nicest. Thus I propose that placement is more important than microphone.

    • @CelloCoach

For me 1. AKG 2. Zoom 3. Røde
My personal preference right now for solo Cello is my TLM102 straight in front down by the floor pointing towards the bridge and a pair of pen mics in stereo about head level with the player pointing down at the cello body. All of them fairly close to the instrument. Really intimate yet open sound.

I find the lavelier mic through the rode clip to be best for recording due to it retaining the most personal detail and requiring the least amount of gain, naturally isolating the strings and allowing for lower background noise from the rest of the room. The proximity mics will all vary depending on the acoustics of the room they're recording in, so a proximity mic in my situation might sound vastly different than your examples. Not to mention, the proximity mics will require a quiet controlled environment at all times for recording. For casual recording in my office, I don't want to have to worry about my nearby computer fans being picked up by a shotgun mic further away from the instrument. Plus I can move the instrument more freely with the lavelier mic and a cable. My question now is which lavelier clip mount to go for, as it looks like the Rode clip is no longer available? :(

    • @CelloCoach
      @CelloCoach  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yes they have discontinued the clip but there are other solutions

Thanks Jonathan for sharing. I have been looking for this info. The AKG sound is head and shoulders above all the others. The only one that even came close is the fuzzy one. Recording my cello is always a challenge to get a real warm acoustic sound.

Unless there is wind, or breath from a vocalist, there is no need to use pop shields or deadcats. All it's doing is blocking sound, and can reduce the higher frequencies reaching the mic, which can, especially on a cello, make it sound boomy and woofy. That C214 could sound so much better without that foam pop shield on it!!!!

I have a Blue Yeti that I have used for recording voice. It seems to not pick the cello at all. I have adjusted the gain to lower settings or higher. Is the Yeti microphone not meant for a lower pitched instrument? I will try the Rode ideas.

@@youuoy5722 break it down: first the notes (no rhythm, dynamics, etc), then speak the rhythms with metronome, then put the two together, then add dynamics...once you add rhythm, most important is to choose the right speed: always choose a speed where you can succeed in doing everything EASILY. This may be very slow at first, but if you stay in the zone where it's easy, meaning you have time to think ahead while also paying attention to what you're doing right now, your tempo will increase on its own. Enjoy the process. And be patient.

Jonathan, i just joined a 100 piece string fiddle group, on my cello, and i am having issues hearing myself during rehearsals. Is there a pickup i can use that would go right into an earbud, or that i can plug directly into my earbuds? I tried having my head against the cello, but i feel a bit silly and it gets in the way of my form.

    • @OttosTheName

@@Kenji1685 Yeah that would work, might not sound as good as a microphone, but you can hear it decently. You can DIY something using Colins Labs video on Piezo elements if you can solder (pre-amp in that video is Mono and uses a 9v battery) or get a piezo+preamp from Aliexpress.
