The reason the frequency response graphs look identical is that they have changed the old NT1's datasheet. It used to look very different. It's possible that the new one is simply more accurate with less smoothing (maybe..., the old frequency response chart never went beyond +2 dB, the new one goes up to nearly +5!), and that they're still the same mics, but the people saying that are not imagining things at least.

Well I have got very attached to my 4th gen NT1, and I'm a long time Rode fan, I did like the Austrian Audio and lewitt sound. The usb and the 32bit float all great addition. As you said they've moved the usb thing forward. Considerably.

Great comparison! XLR sounds more body and has a low end which fits your voice, while USB sounds more mid-range, losing some lows-end which is attractive to your voice.
I personally like Austrian Audio the best, which sounds more smooth, full and has more bottom. IMHO.

It would really like to see what sort of audio treatment you have going on for these demos. I bought this mic, plugged it in and it definitely did not sound like yours fresh out of the package so it's hard for me as a beginner to figure out why yours sounds so much better than mine. It picks up so much ambient noise no matter how silent my recording room is, yours sounds like you're talking directly into my brain and there is no other sound in the world. Even playing around in RODE Central isn't giving me the quality you have.

They later rebranded the company as RØDE (stylizing the "O" as "Ø" in a nod to the founders' Scandinavian heritage) and renamed their condenser microphone the "NT1." The story isn't verified and resides in the realm of urban legend, but it somehow lives on in RØDE's Wikipedia entry.

I feel wether you get a 4'th gen NT1 or the new 5th gen or even a NT1a, most people will be happy with them all, and the slightly bigger bulge in the upper mid and more top boost from the NT1a can easy be dealt with if you feel it's to bright. Especially for your first "pro" recording mike he NT1a packet is a no brainer. And remember .. if you put a 50$ mike in a pro's hand he can make great recordings if he knows what he's doing. Most people won't really notice the diff to mike's costin 1-10k. if the rest of the gear is still "intro" level using this kind of mikes is futile imo.

Sorry NOT EVERYONE is gushing over this mic. I bought it and returned it within my 20 days of testing to see if the stupid thing would stop dropping the first word of every other sentence spoken. Apparently a defective one but cmon....brand new and it was already having an issue. I only wanted it for the USB side and that is where it failed. Luckily I have my RE20 for my XLR application and that is still my workhorse. I will continue to search for a solid USB option for my mobile solution. The Rode NT1 5th was NOT A GAMECHANGER....for me.

That sounds like a defective device...combined with a nasty noise gate.
I have NOT heard of those issues what so ever

@@DarkCornerStudios Defective; yes....Noise gate; no. at least my conclusion after a battery of tests. Again,..perhaps it would have tested fine in the XLR connection but that is not what I wanted this one for. I will not begrudge anyone else though that enjoys great success with it. I wish them well.

I think there were decent UBS mics before NT 1 5th gen, and were even better "on the road" due to their size. Even from the same producer -- Rode NT-USB. They even released a new version recently.

i think he was referring to microphones you could take on the road and use for professional voice over work, but i do agree with you that there were good usb mics for stuff like podcasts, making youtube videos etc

what are your thoughts on the rode podmic usb vs the nt-usb plus? would be using it in an untreated room for personal use. obvi i love the sound of the nt1 5th gen but everyone is telling me i shouldnt use it in an untreated environment. So the recommendation in this video for a on the road set up was unexpected.

Most people who record VO...or voice work on the road, do so in makeshift "blanket booths"

Would it be possible to do decent stereo recordings with two of these mics connected, both via USB-C?

i'm not selling my 4th gen NT1 sorry .......... I can clearly listen the difference in the high frequency boost and it just sounds cheaper. 4th gen sounds flat and warm !!!

Whenever someone says " Huge gamechanger " alarmclocks keeps ringing.
    Please use another termonoligy.
    It is cringe and overused.

At the 6 minute mark into your video, you do other mic comparisons with the NT1. You used the pop filter for the NT1 but no pop filter for the other mics. I have done a comparison with the NT1 with and without the filter. Using that particular cloth pop filter with the NT1, the top end is reduced a noticeable amount. It was audible to my ears anyway. The newer steel mesh pop filter does a better job without reducing the top end as much. Alternatively you can still sing in front of the mic, but angle your head slightly to either side...

In every “5th gen versus 4th gen” it’s clearly audible- the 4th gen is extremely bright/there’s a dip in the upper mids while the 5th gen the top end is rounded off with the mids sounding a bit more balanced. It really sounds different; it’s noticeable even on my phone speaker. Thanks for doing this!

Sounds more like a NT1A rather than the NT1... And that's not good, regardless of the "game-changing" stuff...

This 5th gen mic has serious latency issues when using the usb cable and you want to monitor using headphones. Useless.

I think this mic sounds like trash in this video. I like every mic he put it up against better. I'm not trying to be a hater, but I'm really shocked that people like this mic so much. I feel like it always sounds distorted in that 4k-8k range. Maybe I'm way off and I just need time with it hands on.
