A lot of people have confidence and, usually, the more confidence you have, the less talented you are (Tommy Wizeau, the delusional contestants on "American Idol", etc.). Barbra was the exception : her confidence happened to match her talent. But Barbra had one big flaw : she was undisciplined. Her singing was not the result of hard work : she never worked on her voice. She became known for her singing and as an actor, she thought she could be divine without work. As a result, I don't think she's a very good actress. You can feel when she acts that she is more concerned about how she looks, the camera angle, being cute, than playing with another actor and be real. She is always acting, big.

I do agree that in her later films she is far more concerned about camera angles and the way she looks on screen however if you look past that you will still see an amazing natural talent. Given the right material, her acting is nuanced and always hits the mark, The problem is more the roles that she accepted rather than the talent.
You can just tell that she puts everything into her roles. That line "With an American beauty NOSE!" Always gets me- there's some real emotions behind this song that I think Barbra really feels herself and we feel them as the audience through her. Amazing talent.

I love Barbra. No one can belt it out like she can. Some of us (like myself) may try but there comes a time when you have to face it. NO ONE can beat Barbra. This sing is so inspiring to me as an aspiring actress and it's nice to listen to when I need something to remind me why I love doing it.
I just loved Barbra soooo much growing up in the 70's and 80's... I did this exact scene to get in a part for a play in the 7th grade.... I didn't get the " main " part.... But... Got the 2nd leading part in the play. I didn't get to finish the whole song.... But when I walked home after the audition.... I sang the rest of it!!! I didn't care if anyone thought I was crazy!!! At dinner.... I told my Mother and Step Father about. I knew I was going to get a part in the play. I was told by my Step Father.... No I wasn't.... I looked at him and laughed!! I knew I would. And I did!! ( kinda funny how the characters in the movie thought how she wouldn't " make it!!".. And she Did!!!.. Sort of like what I was going through at that time!!! ). I just love Barbra!! She was and Still is an inspiration in my life!! Thank you!! NEVER GIVE UP!!!!! ( That's what this scene is really about!! Wink! Wink!!)
I for one am glad the songs from Funny Girl are on Glee - it introduces a whole new group of people to a really fantastic musical. But I don't get the whole "so-and-so did it better" argument. The people singing these songs were *inspired* by Barbara. They sing it the way she sang it, and they're practically trying to be Barbara Streisand while they sing it. How can anyone say her version isn't the best when it's absolutely the quintessential version?
