- From July 5th to July [date], 2023,
Embarking on a thrilling solo adventure, I set out on a 3-day quest for bluefin tuna with Independence Sports Fishing, graciously sponsored by Young's Tackle. The Independence, affectionately known as the Indy, boasts impressive dimensions-117 feet long and 32 feet wide-making it perhaps the sturdiest vessel in San Diego waters. Under the seasoned guidance of Captain Brian, we charted our course for the elusive bluefin tuna.
Our journey commenced just 25 miles from San Diego, as detailed in the accompanying video map, where we hooked into some spirited youngsters, ranging from 20 to 40 pounds, around 7 pm.
The following day, our second stop near San Clemente Island, approximately 10 miles away, yielded action-packed daytime fishing sessions.
By the third day, everything clicked into place-no more tangles, just successful tuna hauls. We found that the prime catching times were at sunrise, sunset, and even during the night, with flyline techniques paired with dropshots (4oz), 30 lb fluorocarbon, and nighttime excursions employing 250 to 300g knife jigs proving most effective.
Overall, it was an unforgettable trip with favorable weather and the Indy's remarkable stability. Captain Brian's expertise, coupled with the exceptional staff and delectable cuisine, made for an unparalleled experience. Each meal surpassed expectations, and the camaraderie onboard enhanced the adventure.
The collective efforts of the entire boat resulted in a remarkable catch tally of approximately 190 bluefin, predominantly smaller grade, with notable jackpot winners including impressive specimens weighing 100lbs, 92lbs, and 85lbs, alongside 15 yellowfin tuna.
While I may not have showcased my best angling prowess, I still managed to secure my limits, with my largest catch weighing in at 43lbs-leaving me eager for a rematch in the future.
Thank you for joining me on this exhilarating journey. I hope this video serves as inspiration for you to pursue your fishing dreams with determination and passion. Tight lines!

The Independence is Heaven on Water..............🤙
I’ll be going next month. July 3 to July 5 2024
I do 7 day trips with Tahoe Tuna Club. Cant wait to get back on water.
I have 3 days trip coming up on May 25 on spirit of adventure. (My first time on this boat). It would be nice if i can make it back to the 100lb club again. (Last year, think my biggest was 45lb on 3 charter trips and 90lb on my boat. 2022 was better. 2021 was the best for me. lol)
All those "Weapons of Mass Destruction". Those fish must be scared to death with all those rods coming for them! Captains Brian and Billy along with crew are always great!
Lol. Wish big ones were there to get scared. Mostly babies 15 to 40. Think only 5 or 6 was bigger.
I have fished twice on the independence. 1 (10) day and 1 (5) day trips. The independence is a awesome boat because it is so wide and stable. The captain and crew are awesome too.
I do 4 to 6 BFT trips a year. But never done 5 days or 10 days or longer. Maybe one day but right now 3 days is good enough for me.
Yup I’m in agreement. Think it’s the best boat in San Diego fleet.
Wanted to go on the April trip this year one that had Youngs as well, but timing T.T wife said I can only go in June but busy in June XD.
lol. Hope you can make one of them. Discussing fishing plan with wifey is not fun.
There's Kevin, Mac, Greg, Robert, all the cool kids.
Nice video👍......Congratulations on the BFT......😋the food on the Indy is always great....... that tonkatsu looks like a new menu item. 🤣
Thank you - wish i caught bigger. Lol
Food was excellent!!! Think Better than intrepid, shogun, Royal star,….
Thanks for the great video, reminds me of a 10-day trip on the R P, long range fishing was the most fun I have ever had, just wonderful.
Nice nice nice. My wife approves 3 days only - anything more is automatic NO. Lol
More food than fishing
It was lots of babies. Just didn’t get a good enough footage but anyways food was excellent. Best ever. Lol
Keep fishing :)
Never been fishing on her, but check her out every time she's in at Day at the Docks and impressed by the size and space.
Yup she is a beauty
I like all other boats and captains but i love independence boat and capt Brian. I am going next year again - 7/3 to 7/6 2024. Come fish with me !! Lol
Wow! That rice bowl looks amazing. I gotta do that for wifey lol 😉
You better mention my name when you serve your wife. I want my credit. Jk
Enjoy. And go more fishing !!!!
@@Fishingwithjameschoi I did lol. She said

I just realized we were on two trips together this year Indy and intrepid 3 day lol
What ? Lol.
I just realized the same thing. Do you live near by ? When is your next trip ?
@@Fishingwithjameschoiyeah I was on both trips lol
@@FishingwithjameschoiI shared your videos on Facebook
@@thelongrangers when is your next trip ?
Correction: i used last years logo at the end. Lol. Trip was definitely 2023.
Congrats on the awesome trip! Would love to see some fish fighting videos of the trip if you have any
Sorry boss. No action this time - maybe next one in sept. 2023.
This is my dream of a lifetime trip.
Great video.
What set up did you catch the fish on, the fly line?
My dream too. Brother.
30lb floro fly line with rubberband tied 4oz sinker. We did hook up on fly line but very little. Mostly dropshot setup.
After seeing all these videos recently I reallyyy want to book a trip for next summer. Just debating if I should just rent rods or buy my own lol I’m from PA and only mainly fish the Great Lakes so if I buy, only gonna get used twice a year at best..
Ummm buy it. But if you can use it for years and years. For memory and experience - i think it’s price less. Lol
Plus bonus if you bring fresh tuna home in PA. You will be a hero ! Lol
@@Fishingwithjameschoi yeah I’m sure I’ll end up just buying a few set ups lol I already have thousands in gear, what’s a few thousand more! Lol 😂 how many of those trips have you been on?
@@jakejacobson2999 i go 5 to 6 times a year. Check my instrgram fishingwithjamesc
I am coming from Fort Wayne Indiana in August and I have decided to rent. You really need 2 speed reels and money can become a factor. You can get 4 real's for $50 rental and $50 rental for 100 pound set up if you have big bluefin.
@@davidhollingsed7756 nice good luck! But yeah I hear ya. I figure if I buy the gear I’ll be looking at spending around $2000 easy… what length trip are you doing?
You already got your bft ???
This is my 2nd BFT trip of the year
