    Oh yes the cattle barges. Everyone all piled up on one side fighting each other for space. Miss it so much. Now i live in the pacific north west and nowhere hear the ocean. All my rods and reels are stacked and packed in boxes gathering dust.
    Is the SD a 3/4 day boat? Never heard of the boat back in the late 1990s. 🤔

    • @fishnsage
      @fishnsage  ปีที่แล้ว

      I remember those days fighting for albacore in the crowded corner. That's where I learned to back the drag off in a tangle and saw other people off. Oh the memories! Thank goodness we're much more civilized now. I'm sure there's plenty of fantastic river fishing up there?
      It was bought by Ryan Bostian sometime around then. He made it one of the top 3/4 day boats in the fleet. Thanks for watching!

    0801, thank you for throwing that bait fish over board instead of it suffering on the deck, becoming a slipping hazard and wasted bait=$$.you guys are lucky over there, here on the north East Coast it's 1 bluefin tuna of large size PER boat

    6:02 -- Nice that they let you troll. Lots of SoCal captains don't let you do that.
    Dropped $900 on a nice trolling setup this past summer, got onto the Sum Fun out of Dana Point for a 12 hour day, was super excited to use my trolling outfit for the first time... captain said "No way" to trolling. Was super bummed.

    • @fishnsage
      @fishnsage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No one likes to troll. Whenever there’s a jig strike, everyone is running to the bait tank instead of winding in the trollers. Maybe you can use your setup for jigging? Thanks for watching!

    • @jake9705
      @jake9705 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@fishnsage -- You're right that many trollers need to mind their rod when it's time to reel it in. I'm always posted up at my trolling rod when deployed, ready to reel it all in when we come up on a boil or patty.
      Trolling is too fun not to do though. Gets you more out of your ticket if you're steaming around all day. Also keeps me out of the galley and away from those beers! 😂

    #2’s are just fine! I’ve caught 80lb tuna on those! Just gotta let the fish eat it, and let the fish set the hook for you. You’ll yoink the hook out every time if you set the hook with a circle hook.

    • @fishnsage

      Fishing bonita was a different story. They would run with the bait in their mouths. I switched to 2/0 then got a bluefin. Thanks for your support!

  • @OutdoorAdrian
    @OutdoorAdrian ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Hey dude a couple of pointers for you.
    You should stop “thumbing” the spool so much. Let the fish eat that bait. What helped me was counting to 3 or 4 with “one one thousand, two one thousand” and so on.
    The smaller the hook the better. I’ve caught 60 LB bluefin on a #2 circle no issues whatsoever. With circle hooks you have to just count with your fingers or thumb lightly on the spool, then barely put it in gear. Don’t slam it into full strike. Then your circle hook will do what it’s designed for and land in the corner of the mouth. Hope this helps as it has me. Happy fishing dude.

    • @fishnsage
      @fishnsage  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, thanks for the tip! I get bit and they run and stop, run and stop, so I gently put it in gear and lift. Next thing you know, the hook comes out. You’re right, I should wait longer. Next time I’ll give it a longer count. Thanks for watching!

    • @jake9705
      @jake9705 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@fishnsage -- There's your problem: you don't "lift" to set a circle hook. You're supposed to set a circle hook by holding the rod steady and cranking until the circle hook sets itself. Lifting/swinging a circle hook outfit will yank the circle hook out of the fish's mouth.

    • @fishnsage
