I don’t think we have to look much deeper than that. Ofc culture can play on that and exacerbate it even more, like I think it does but it’s not an INVENTION of our culture.

honestly shocked that we don't yet have mirrors that apply filters lmao I think one of the issues too is the lack of "artistry" when it comes to surgeons performing these procedures. you see a lot of plastic surgeons being like, "oh, this is what I would change about your face blah blah," to fit to the current beauty standard, rather than looking at a face and using an artist's eye to give someone a result that would fit them personally. I don't feel like that is something every surgeon is capable of
There’s also one major factor which is the media, in the older days the media was not as prominent and strong as it is now, as well as the use of face filters that has become so prevalent it has obscured the normality of an ordinary face. Celebrities don’t want to get bullied or scrutinised for their unique looks or style which used to be intriguing back then. The overconsumption of media has also fuelled the same beauty standards for everyone globally which is probably why everyone looks the same now.
Its sad because I saw it coming. Its the same in places like South Korea. First I thought I was racially blind but Im a black woman raised in a very multicultural city with over 130 ethncities and MANY Asians of all types of backgrounds, so that didnt make sense to me. Thats when I found out about how normal surgery is in South Korea ( and how filters etc are used), and they have a list of things like shaving Jaws to the same shape, changing the eyes to having a double lid, etc gave the same type of face as a result.
I get my hair cut every 8 weeks and that feels like a chore. I can’t imagine doing all of this. I’m 58 and I love seeing people as they are naturally. Have you seen Noah Wyle lately? Oh his mature face is soooo handsome 😊.
That’s funny same here am 71 and it’s been since May - hair down my back due to just not wanting to bother and I just go to Kiddie Cutters for straight cut across and bangs. It’s ridiculous - you’ve encouraged me to make that appt. :)
I do not agree with the woman in the video claiming that beauty standards were more diverse and unique in the past. Women like Rita Hayworth, Grace Kelly and Farah Fawcette were all young, thin and extremly attractive women. The only thing that change are trends. The "Instagram Face " will be a thing of the past in less than 10 years.
This beauty hysteria is not going away. Look at the bright side Gary; you will not be out of work until the day you retire. If I was studying to be a doctor I would surely opt for becoming a plastic surgeon. By the way is there a fancier word for plastic surgeon??
And then they have children that look nothing like them....... but run out and get the 16-year-old the nose job. I'm so glad I'm in my 50s and not a youngster
It does! David Bowie was always a beauty but his original teeth had so much more character. A popstar ex of mine had his snaggletooth fixed and he was cuter before. Not saying to leave it your teeth are a health hazard etc. but I can see veneers coming a mile away
I’m a high school teacher in Thailand. What my students are bombarded with as beauty standards makes me shudder. As someone nearing 40, beauty and makeup were so different back then.
Just turned 46 and only received filler for the first time 2 years ago to my lips. 3 sessions, 1mL per visit. Since then the info has come out about the filler not “going away” as quickly as it’s told to you. Each of the 3 estheticians said I would probably need to come back in 9-12 months to maintain. I plan to hold off for another year to see what I’m left with and it’s been 9 months since my last top off. May get a touch added to my upper cheekbone as I’ve lost weight in the last year and have lost some volume along with being middle age. But definitely never bought into standardized beauty standards. I love my schnoz and would never want a skinny button nose.
Rather be unattractive which I am than eff my face up completely. Used to hate my round face, as I grow older and the bone structure became a bit prominent I have started being kinder to it lmao.
I think nowadays some if not most people don't appreciate unique beauty they only appreciate beauty that fits current beauty standards. I notice in vindictaratecelebs a women's only sub. the top 10s or 7-9s all have almond eyes, straight nose, full pouty lips and obligatory snatched face . Even without men that sub is misogynistic. They love putting Sydney Sweeney down for being male gaze, keeping setting her up for failure making her out to be at best average, imply she's a butterface and outright state shes only attractive and famous for her big chest and being popular amongst men. I even once saw once saw comparison vs post Angelina jolie or Jennifer Anniston. Those comments were so catty one even replied "that's why Brad chose angelina". They consider girl next door beauty boring and neoteny average. They always underrate poc mostly east, southeast and south asians if they're baby face. You'd be surprised how many kpop idols they under rate. They don't admit it but they do apply eurocentric beauty standards to poc. They complain about Instagram face yet always apply insta beauty standards in that post. Anyone that doesnt fit that standards are down rated especially if they have neotenous faces.
The the inflated "fish lips", aka "russian lip injections" aka "Kylie Jenner" lips. It has become a rite of passage for women wanting to alter (or "improve"?) their appearances. It's cheap and immediate, giving an instant dopamine boost. Not only does it seldom look good (imo), but almost everyone with lip injections has the same mouth shape, whether at rest or smiling 🤔 this is not really a gripe with fillers, but when it's overdone on too many people. Uncanny, unappealing, cookie-cutter, and and robotic. It's too much, and the alterations are obvious. But those who've overdone it don't see it that way, and eventually want to get more filler. Is this what people mean when they talk about filler blindness?
Celebrities are looking so similar that some of them you have to check the description of who they are. I'm new to this channel and I had an interesting time wondering who is who since the facial distinction have become extremely cookie cutter. In my family's history of professional photographers there has been ways to touch up the appearance of the people. The actual physical filters on lens or even Vaseline coating the lens were used along with time consuming hand editing. Ageism is rampant out there at any economic level so the idea that prolonged youth has a factor now more than before, unfortunately.
@ the point is not if they had surgery, the point is that they did not erase their looks to all look like generic cookie cutter Hollywood actresses. You couldn't mistake Rita Hayworth for Elizabeth Taylor or Betty Grable or Bette Davis. but I can't tell the difference between Amy Adams & Isla Fisher or Keira Knightley and Natalie Portman,, All the Kardashians look the same -- I kind of figure out who is who by their height and size of their rear ends,,,,
I look forward to the day where our unique and natural looks are celebrated. It’s so unutterably BORING how people embrace plastic surgery trends and end up looking similar to each other and, increasingly, also look weird. I mean, people have always followed trends, but surgery is invasive and long-lasting compared with a look created by make-up.
Yes, mostly the influencers and celebrities are looking the same... eyes, noses, face shape and especially the lips and teeth!!! Sometimes when I scroll through Instagram, I have to scroll back up twice or thrice to identify the influencer or celebrity 😅😂 At certain angles, many of them look like photocopies. And their fashion and accessories are also the same because they just always get those similar brands.
The fact that plastic surgery has become affordable (just like luxury brands) plus the global reach of social media has made this trend possible! 😊Or the fact that the middle class has grown immensely and can spend that kind of money!
I really enjoyed this video, I think that a lot of standards today are based on a digital image of beauty very videogamishy….with an ideal woman look that has them all: larger breast, full lips, large glutes…fit toned …flawless skin, you literally want to have them all in one package ….but really an idealized, artificial image from a video game.
I remember finding my father's Playboy magazines when I was a kid in the 1960's. There were so many different kinds of beautiful women's bodies, while today's fashions have 'flattened' the varieties of beauty. Both the young Faye Dunaway and the young Sophia Loren were beautiful women who looked nothing like one another, face or body. I miss that variety.
Can you possibly do DARCY AND STACY SILVA??? They are always going back to Turke . Doesn’t Turkish plastic surgery last? Plenty of online pics available from them and TLC shows.
the thing about thin vs thick eyebrows, that was so annoying for me as a mid 90s baby. As a teenager I got my eyebrows waxed all the time to be super thin. Then in my late teens, I remember suddenly thick eyebrows were in, and there was nothing I could do because my eyebrows were so waxed that they wouldn't grow back in thick. That's when I learned beauty trends are all bullshit lol
As I get older, I better appreciate looking like I belong in my own family. I look in the mirror now and see the features of my ancestors, which is a powerful thing. I'm glad I never played with my natural appearance. At least I know who I see in the mirror.
It's true. I can't tell the difference between any of the actresses anymore. they all look alike. When you look at the famous movie stars from the 40's and 50's, they all looked unique, different and beautiful. Elizabeth Taylor looked different from Katherine Hepburn and different from Grace Kelly and different from Audrey Hepburn and different from Marilyn Monroe.
Marilyn monroe got so much plastic surgery...... so much and even Audrey Hepburn got a small nose job .... even in the 50s they all got plastic surgery. Sry to say the truth
These facial fillers and surgery look better in pictures than in person. I see women at the grocery food store who look ridiculous, their faces look weird. Why Dr's let patients leave looking this this, unless they don't know what looks real anymore.
I specifically didn't want to get braces because my teeth were unique but also symmetrical. Like Kirsten Dunst. Maybe because I never focussed on comparing myself to models or wasn't affected by bullies, one girl tried to bully me over my big butt (when flat butts were the rage) who's laughing now! haha. But maybe because back then surgery wasn't even thought about, I can't change it so it's not worth my energy to think about. But it's also a good example, that thinner lips will probably be in fashion in 10yrs so it's really not worth obsessing over. Sadly my bottom teeth needed straightening due to more overcrowded, and I got braces for both top and bottom. If it affects your quality of life, there's no question. But also, if it makes someone happy, who am I to judge.
Snapchat made me feel so ugly. I got so used to the filters, then I’d go in and photoshop out the tell tell signs of the filter then I’d post it to all my social media accounts and I took A LOT of selfies. Even today I will take a pic of myself and be a little shocked at how I look. 😢
I've always found you attractive, Dr. You have a special magnetism and unique look. More importantly, your kindness and being an overall good person shines though in your videos.
It’s kind of always been like that. Hollywood actresses held the standards and women tried to copy that. But true way more people are using botox and getting face lifts. ❤
It’s the eyes and lips that seem to be the same. I definitely think something is up. Can plastic surgery adjust someone’s eyes? They all have the same tilt.
Saddest part is history repeats itself and trends recycle. Just a couple of years back, everyone wanted the Kardashian BBL look, now we're back to heroin chic (even the Kardashians have gotten rid of their BBLs and going for ozempic). Unique visuals will eventually have it's re-comeuppance and people who have gotten "instagram face" enhancements will scutter to undo it which will be costly, risky and a potentially prolonged process.
It's disappointing and deceiving how many people don't look like "themselves." I remember when my grandma tried talking me out of using a push-up bra, which I didn't need, but was fashionable. She told me a story about a woman who went to bed with her boyfriend and took all these things off and then he saw who he really was and was disappointed and confused. Well, that's an example. It would be hugely disappointing. I now see 👀 the message she tried teaching me. 😊😊😊
One thing that has remained consistent, has been thin. It never goes away, and is very 17:07 aging once you hit your 40’s. Aiming for a slightly more idealised version of yourself, especially actresses and models is understandable. Buying themselves some more time in their careers. I’m choosing to lean into being older, for a start, because I’m broke. 😁
Regular people notice that many famous and successful individuals have that typical "Instagram/plastic surgery" look. The industry heavily promotes this appearance, encouraging regular people to spend thousands of dollars trying to replicate it. They are creating insecurities we shouldn't even have in the first place and then they prey on it.
For sure, totally agreement w all, even the men, y’all today R looking like live Ken & Barbie (dolls). Vanity is off the charts today, so unnatural looking. Back in the day the ideal women & men were naturally unique, beautiful so different, the real deal, so stop striving for false perfection, it’s not there doesn’t exist, not healthy and eventually it’ll still catch up w you! Excellent video! Thanx Dr. G 😘
How much responsibility do plastic surgeons take for not rejecting certain patients? For example, is it not unethical for a plastic surgeon to give a 34 year old a face lift? Since cosmetic surgery is optional, it appears that some plastic surgeons are more motivated by money than adhering to the principles of the Hippocratic Oath.
People never appreciated aging, since forever we have followed a fashionable look and perfect body in the current beauty canon, we had also toxic trends like tuberculosis beauty in the Romantic era, skinny, pale, sickly looking girls with wet eyes and blushed face like in fever were the most desired and celebrated. The only difference now is it speeded up a lot and got more global and accessible. Trends don't need years to spread now, it's a matter of hours.
What’s also weird about this ‘Culture’ are influencer’s fans fighting tooth and nail that they are ‘natural’. These fans are so wrapped up into this parasocial relationship, they’ll get mad if you call out the influencers or celebs procedures. A good example are Kendall Jenner fans. They die on the hill that she’s all natural. They’re instant that her shaved nose is ‘growing up’. This is why i think disclosure is somewhat important. Because it messes with young women’s heads.
I don't think this is so unusual. A trend gets set by someone beautiful or popular or heralded, and then others follow the trend. For instance I find the overfilled lips to look horrific but it's still on trend so people do it. It's always been like this to some degree but is probably somewhat worse now due to the availability of fillers, botox, laser treatments, and plastic surgery.
Can you explain what has happened to Nicole Kidman's face. She stands out as the actor who has most lost her natural face shape. Even Demi Moore "fixed" her face I don't understand why Nicoles face has ended up this way? . Also some of the most iconic female actors - Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Meryl Streep, Jamie Lee Curtis et et et their faces to age naturally and they remained in high demand because of their acting - so it's not as if Nicole has to do this stuff to her face - thanks it would be great to make sense of Nicole's "face" 😅
I usually agree, but your one statement about how the thinner upper lip and more full lower lip being more standard or natural for humans is only applicable for certain races (i.e. caucasian). I've had people comment on occasion wondering if I had filler in my upper lip, but no it's natural. I'm guessing the people who are over filling their upper lip are trying to emulate a more "exotic" (global majority) look
True, I feel like the telltale is the lack of natural creases. Some people don’t pay attention to detail and assume people have filler. Some people have smoother lines, that may look like filler.
could you make a video about how getting some injectables like biostimulators could complicate getting a facelift? i saw an article on allure about it recently and it blew my mind. would love to know your opinion on this!
Ahem. The social media algorithms are a tad more nuanced. The platform offers up what is trending, (i.e. popular), what the visitor has engaged with before (i.e., targeted) and what is most profitable for the platform. You have to be ruthless and very very persistent to defeat the algorithm. I researched emergency back-up generators for my home, since monsoon rains knock out the power from time to time. For a WEEK every single video offered to me was a sensationalised fear-mongering disaster/tragedy reel. I had to turn down hundreds of them before the damned algorithm conceded and stopped offering me dead baby stories. If it was strictly popularity/engagement, and not impacted by profitability, the algorithm would have adjusted much sooner.
This is US Hollywood culture, where the elderly are marginalized. Europeans respect and revere the elderly. I would like to think in Canada we respect the elderly as well.
I think since the masses are beginning to understand that a GREAT surgeon will render results that look natural, people are taking more interest in the option for cosmetic surgery. Many people no longer believe that cosmetic surgery is meant to be obvious. A great plastic surgeon will enhance or accentuate what you already have rather than make obvious changes. Bad surgeons give surgery a bad name. We can thank Florida and Mexico cosmetic surgeon standards. You can be a regular family doc or dermatologist in those places, but you can take a two month course to be able to slap the “cosmetic surgeon” label on your placard. If cosmetic surgery is something you’re interested in, at the very least, make sure you go to a board certified PLASTIC surgeon.

Can you do a video on You Tuber Kate Cassidy - Liam Payne's ex girlfriend (not the actress) ? She says she is 25 years old but she looks so weirdly old. Sometimes she looks like she is 40 years old. Why is that ? I know she isn't a celebrity, but I can't figure out why someone so young looks so much older than she is. My guess is that she has had bad work done on her face.

I don't feel like that is something every surgeon is capable of
Great video. Thanks for this, Gary.
Thank you, Dr Linkov - thoughtful, insightful, expert - and professional - comments.
Everyone also has the same hairdo !
Well not everyone
Well. Hair changes are not permanent
I think so too. Long straight hair seems to be very popular. Even though there are cute short hair styles not a lot of women want that
It's so neat that we watch the same videos that professionals watch too- much appreciated!!!
Why almost every mature women starting looking alike chucky the killer doll?
😂😅🤣
I do not comprehend emulation. Celebrate the soul and natural gifts in self and others. ❤🇨🇦
It saddens me to see so many beautiful people not thinking they are. Just because of social media (she says on social media...)
@@Candleflower42😊
@yesiamsharon...preach! is it just me or does Noah Wyle look more like Keanu Reeves as he ages? Very handsome
@@Mimi-ix7zv I think we win because of both!! 🤩
The sad thing about Rita Hayworth was she was Latina and did things like electrolysis on her hair line to look more Caucasian.
@InvertInteriors I did not know that. Thanks for the info.
Her given name was Margarita Carmen Cansino and her father was Spanish. So I should have said Hispanic not Latina.
The thought of plastic surgery is equally terrifying as it is alluring.
This beauty hysteria is not going away. Look at the bright side Gary; you will not be out of work until the day you retire. If I was studying to be a doctor I would surely opt for becoming a plastic surgeon. By the way is there a fancier word for plastic surgeon??
you could say a doctor that performs facial plastics😊
And then they have children that look nothing like them....... but run out and get the 16-year-old the nose job. I'm so glad I'm in my 50s and not a youngster
I have a crooked smile, and I think it gives my face character 😊😊
It does! David Bowie was always a beauty but his original teeth had so much more character. A popstar ex of mine had his snaggletooth fixed and he was cuter before. Not saying to leave it your teeth are a health hazard etc. but I can see veneers coming a mile away
I LOVE crooked smiles, and/or big teeth. I think they are so enchanting 🥰
It makes your smile stand out, and become unforgettable!
I miss seeing unique beauty. I hate this influencer culture 😒
14:25 "Oh wow their forehead is moving" Laughed out loud
I think the wrong video was linked in the description. I wanted to check it out and was redirected to another video. Just to give a heads up!
I don't know if people know that algorithm is a programm not a person😅
7:26 OMG wasn't Rita Hayworth just gorgeous ???
Yess ❤
Didn't Rita Hayworth have her hair line raised and a nose job so she didn't look so ethnic ??
@ the point is not if they had surgery, the point is that they did not erase their looks to all look like generic cookie cutter Hollywood actresses. You couldn't mistake Rita Hayworth for Elizabeth Taylor or Betty Grable or Bette Davis. but I can't tell the difference between Amy Adams & Isla Fisher or Keira Knightley and Natalie Portman,, All the Kardashians look the same -- I kind of figure out who is who by their height and size of their rear ends,,,,
This is so refreshing to hear. I really appreciate the videos you guys share!
"Fitting in to a system that awards conformity...". I don't want any part of that system, thank you.
How has it become more affordable. It's totally expensive!
The middle class is about dead. There is only the filthy rich or the impoverished.
I totally agree...have always thought that...very insightful observation.I hope it will lead to change
I want to see "perfect unibrow" trending now.. 😄
You just captured my biggest sentiment on plastic surgery
They all look alike, yes, and the look 👀 is NOT good.😼
LOVE this video!!
Dr. Gary, i hope you are doing well and your health has improved. A huge fan of you. Love and best wishes for you sir 🤗
Can you possibly do DARCY AND STACY SILVA??? They are always going back to Turke . Doesn’t Turkish plastic surgery last? Plenty of online pics available from them and TLC shows.
It is much cheaper to have plastic surgery in Turkey.
the thing about thin vs thick eyebrows, that was so annoying for me as a mid 90s baby.
In France a lot of star have différentes face bécause Franch star are more natural than usa star
Europeans embrace aging and respect and admire the elderly.
As I get older, I better appreciate looking like I belong in my own family. I look in the mirror now and see the features of my ancestors, which is a powerful thing. I'm glad I never played with my natural appearance. At least I know who I see in the mirror.
Thankyou enjoyed this very much
And they all had their tweaks but still didnt look exactly alike
Elizabeth Taylor went wild with the plastic surgery
@@alisonmercer5946 Yes but they was looking unique because of plastic surgery. But ok .
There was no plstic surgery in the 50s 60s
Been saying that fo years!!
It’s kind of always been like that. Hollywood actresses held the standards and women tried to copy that. But true way more people are using botox and getting face lifts. ❤
This look is not perfect. Its become a caricature.
It’s the eyes and lips that seem to be the same. I definitely think something is up. Can plastic surgery adjust someone’s eyes? They all have the same tilt.
face lifts can do it i think
botox, brow lift, face lift
Yes canthoplasty can
The noses also look pretty similar imo
The flappers all look alike to me though
I love Laura Jane Atelier!!
I'm not in the 'public eye' but I don't look like these examples!!😄
Dr Gary, did you adopt the term 'tweak-ments' from Stephanie?!
I have been saying this for a while, they all look the same!
Cookie cutter face and cookie cutter cars.
Back in the day (sixties) we had what was called "Charm School", for girls (ONLY) learning the basic beauty tips, hygiene etc and i rmbr vividly the teacher explaining how to apply lipstick and rule of etiquette then was the upper shld always be the thinner of the 2 lips bcz naturally our bottom lip is the fullest always. Boy how times have changed! Today they're full, full of themselves than any 😂
Please link to the creator. You’ve linked the wrong video.
Its ok just like how everyone has the same phone
i think the surgeries / injectables today markets more to young people, since they are the most impressionable, hence, more profitable
everybody should just become goth. Like, 80's Victorian inspired vampirey goth. If we're all gonna look the same lets all at least look cool
It’s like looking at a group of clones, fembots. So boring.
In the UK film and TV industry there are far more natural looking actors. I hope this remains.
Please react about a vidéo of gab jld he talk about the negatif impact of Kardashian in woman
He said thing intéressant
Can you do a video on You Tuber Kate Cassidy - Liam Payne's ex girlfriend (not the actress) ? She says she is 25 years old but she looks so weirdly old. Sometimes she looks like she is 40 years old. Why is that ? I know she isn't a celebrity, but I can't figure out why someone so young looks so much older than she is. My guess is that she has had bad work done on her face.
