20-Shot C96 "Broomhandle" Mauser

  • Early in the production of the C96 Mauser, the company tried a variety of different configurations of the pistol, to see what would be popular and sell well. Most of these were abandoned by about 1902, when the design was more or less standardized to the version were are familiar with today. One of the early experiments was with a 20-round fixed magazine, or which 188 were made. This was fed using two 10-round stripper clips, and that seems to have been the biggest problem with it. According to some folks who have used these, the magazines is quite difficult to fully load, making the 10-shot version rather more practical.

    Would be a great cavalry pistol. 20 shots without reloading beats any of the 6 shot revolvers or bolt actions of the day and certainly swords/sabers and would allow for suppressive fire in a charge. I think only the US embraced the pistol concept for cavalry around this time and up too ww2, the doctrine was to start firing within a few feet of the enemy.

    In Shingeki no Kyojin (SPOILER) the mangaka introduced the C96 as the marleyan official pistol. The Folk of the Walls (Paradise) adapted it to be used with the Antipersonnel ODM Gear, precisely this 20 magbox version, but with a second trigger under the main one, in order to use the ODM hooks (fired from a box attached below the grip and long magazine), it not just lets flying to the porter, but also works as a improvised secondary gun in case the pistol gets run off ammo. It's sick.

    I find it interesting that Mauser didn't use a detachable magazine on these guns initially since their 06/08 pistols had detachable 20 rd mags.

  • @NormanMatchem
    @NormanMatchem 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Well a couple advantages to having a 20-shot mag would be, firstly, perhaps you find it more comfortable to hold onto the base of the mag sort of as a foregrip instead of having your hand up under the barrel. Might help lessen muzzle flip. Secondly, with the magazine being longer, I imagine those first 10 rounds loaded would be more easily done than on a typical 10-shot C96. The next 20 would undoubtedly be very difficult, but the first 10 I imagine would slide in like butter.
    If only there was some kind of reinforced clip you could get; in vids I see of people reloading C96 pistols with clips, often times you see a round or two pop off due to the strain. If you could get a clip that could take more pressure and won't have rounds coming loose like that, then perhaps it wouldn't be such a pain in loading the 20-rnder. Sure it would still be very stiff, but you could be confident in that the rounds WILL go in if you just jam them down hard enough.
    Just playing the Devil's advocate here, I can see some advantages, but yeah, the extra weight, especially out front, doesn't sound particularly pleasant. With a stock though, if you were to push the butt down into your lap, while holding the pistol by the magazine, the two points might offer enough rigidity to make loading that 2nd clip easier. Or, another option; just reload when there's 0-5 rounds left. When reloading from empty, just use one clip, fire a few shots, then shove another 10-rnd clip in when the mag is at half or less.
    If the pistol is intended to be used as such; a pistol, then yeah, keep it at just 10. I wouldn't mind trying out that 20-rnder. Hell, who am I kidding, I'd like to try ANY C96! ESPECIALLY the Schnellfeuer! Detachable 20-rnd mags, plus select fire? Hell yeah!
    Edit: If someone started producing modern Red 9 C96s, as long as they could keep the cost reasonable, I think it'd sell well! Though the US might have issues with the whole SBR thing. Attaching the holster as a stock would essentially make it illegal for anyone who didn't have the proper paperwork I think. In Canada though, a Restricted license would be all that's needed, and I've had one since I was 18 years old :P

      @jedcollings3624 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Issue out 10 round and 5 round clips for a more reliable emergency reload, 10 then 5 or 5 quickly from the belt then 10 when clear, add a left side protrusion to the bolt to replicate bolt action loading when used as a carbine 👌

    The C96 was used by Indian revolutionaries during the Indian independence movementIndian independence movement.
    The story begins after Rodda Arms Heist took place in 1914 and refers to the theft of a huge consignment of pistols and cartridges from a Calcutta-based British arms retailer Rodda & Co. The arms and ammunition, stolen by Bengal’s revolutionaries and then distributed among their ranks to be used during the freedom struggle, was described by the British as the “event of the greatest importance in the development of revolutionary crime in Bengal”. The pistols from this stolen cache were used in events such as the famous ‘Kakori Train Conspiracy’ and even by revolutionaries like Bhagat Singh and Chandrashekhar Azad.
    Bhagat singh s shikh later hanged

      swdfsdft Actually no, its the opposite. The C96 has a ton of small internal pieces that fit and work together like a watch. It would be extremely expensive to manufacture simply because of the amount of machining involved. I would bet that the cost of a newly made one would be on par to an original one!

      sergeantbigmac I would consider "on par with original examples" to be relatively cheap... especially if they were made with modern materials and i could shoot it without feeling guilty or afraid i'm destroying an antique masterpiece.
      People in the CAS community pay upwards of 600$ for even the lowest quality colt replicas, and in the 2k range for their rifles. Why wouldn't similarly-minded people pay in the 800-1k range for a Broomhandle in 9, or .45 acp, or something of the like?

    One of the first things I do in Red Dead 2 is the outlaw mission that drops the Mauser pistol. Sure, a revolver will have more stopping power. But a bullet to the dome of an NPC doesn't really care which gun it's coming out of. The rate of fire, and 10 round capacity, really do cause me to never touch a revolver again. Pistols like the Mauser must have really blown everyone's minds back then. Given enough time, humans will figure anything out, for better or worse. Lol

    Ahh, I kinda miss the old intro a bit. I think I recall it getting a bit repetitive back in the day and was glad to see it replaced, but it's nice to see again. Going to be really interesting to revisit TH-cam decades from now to see all this old content I used to enjoy... I hope my son ends up being big into firearms like myself, I imagine he will be. If my daughter ends up becoming a female gun TH-camr I'd be so proud of her, I dare say she'd have me on from time to time for a skit. I'd probably fulfill the stereotypical role of the over-protective gun-toting dad. Already envisioned a comical scene, I welcome feedback from any who read it.
    So firstly my wife is Asian so she's probably going to appear a bit mixed, which I think would compound the cute factor. I imagine her being in her late teens or 20s. I'm in my study, at my computer, and she runs up to me in an animatedly effeminate/girly way even though I think she'll end up being a little bit of a tomboy, so y'know, it's an act. Then, building on the already excessive girliness, she cries "Daddy, daddy, someone said something mean about me on the internet!"
    I reach underneath my desk, produce a pump-action shotgun, and rack the action as I stand up and look quite sternly down at her.
    "What's his IP address."
    I think it'd be pretty darn funny, but she ain't even conceived yet so if that event ever actually occurs, it won't be until like 2040 or later. I'm going to teach any and all of my children, however many they may be, how to safely handle firearms at a young age. My wife and I are open to perhaps even five kids depending on if we can financially afford that many and if we can handle the stresses of parentage.

    Can you top off the magazine? Suppose you had a clip with a lip at the top. Could you pull the action back while applying pressure from this clip to prevent the round in the chamber from ejecting, then press as many rounds from the clip down as will feed before lifting it out of the way and bringing the action forward as you normally would?

    Strange that they managed to make the full auto ones load from a magazine but the normal mauser and red 9 mauser load from the top :( if you could get a 9mm mauser that fires a 10 round magazine that would be the gun but can you? Or is that basically what the luger is there for ahah

    • @ForgottenWeapons

      No. I suspect such a stripper clip would have too much friction to be practical.

    • @Resurrection06
      @Resurrection06 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Forgotten Weapons i figured as such but i would've figured with such troubles loading the thing they would've given it a try or implement a system that would make it easier to load all 20

    • @ostiariusalpha
      @ostiariusalpha 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why not a compromise? I wonder if a 15 rd. clip would have been sufficiently low on resistance to load quickly and you'd have fewer reloads than with the 10 rd. strips.

  • @EDSKaR
    @EDSKaR 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I was under the impression that the bolt hold open of this gun was the follower itself, and then the clip as you loaded. So when you pull out the first clip after you've emptied it into the magazine, wouldn't the bolt close?
    Do you have to manually pull the bolt open to get the next clip in? Does that mean 'wasting' a round that was loaded from the first set of ten?
    For an internal magazine like this, it doesn't seem practical.

    • @ForgottenWeapons
      @ForgottenWeapons  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct, or you can manually hold the bolt open while you load the second batch of rounds. There is a technique for pushing up on the hammer to hold the bolt open, but it's a bit tricky and definitely a pain in the butt.
      It's a forgotten weapon for good reason. :)

    • @EDSKaR
      @EDSKaR 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Forgotten Weapons *Thanks for answering*
      As you said in the video, the only practical way to use this is to load twenty pre-battle then during fighting just load from single 10 round clips, so that it essentially becomes a heavy 10 rounder.
      I'd always prefer the detachable mag version for the obvious reasons.

  • @DavidSmith-xv2hc

    When you say it would be hard to load, do you just mean that you'd have to load it twice, with 2 stripper clips? Or did you mean something to do with spring pressure in the mag? Confused about that.
    Also, in the comments you said that "I suspect such a stripper clip would have too much friction to be practical." Really? Then how do AK 74 15 round clips work?

    • @ostiariusalpha
      @ostiariusalpha 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The spring pressure is a large part of it. When Ian is talking about "too much friction," he means that a full, 20rd stripper clip would be impractical because the resistance increases as you make have to push on more rounds. This is especially true with these early style stripper clips which tend to be snug. On the ten rounders this isn't a problem, you can grasp the weapon for leverage with the same hand that's pushing the rounds in. Unless you have the kind of paws that even a pro basketball player would envy, you won't be able to do that with 20rd clips. On the AK74, the stripper clips have a looser fit (they use a retainer tab to keep the rounds on when fully loaded), and it helps that rifles cartridges give you more to push on.

    Are those pocket holes milled in to the body an after thought? I mean, you see the rest of the gun and it has no machine marks (apparent to the eye of the camera) whilst those pockets (and the recess up on top of the gun) have really obvious machine path marks.
    Regardless an awesome weapon.

    • @fraserdavidson6900
      @fraserdavidson6900 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      My guess is it was a forged frame, which gives a nicer surface finish, followed by milling of the reliefs, which is very dependant on tool sharpness, and machine set up to achieve a nice finish.
