Funimation know no shame. Really, really wish some other company would take over the distribution rights because Funi clearly don't care as long as they can shat out these lazy releases, and the masses don't seem to care.

What about us younger fans? I don't have $3000 to put down on owning all the Dragon Boxes, and even if the new steelbook BRs have a lazy form of remaster, $350 to own a 4:3 version of DBZ seems like a good deal to me. Sure, I'd prefer to own a renewed Dragon Box or Level Set even if it costs twice as much, but what if the Toei DBZ remaster gets cancelled, and the steelbooks which literally say limited edition on them are discontinued while waiting for the Toei release? Then the only accessible release for DBZ would be the 2014 Blu-Rays, which I own and we all know are dog shit.

We don’t need steel boxes, bundle cases. What we need is a collector set that has all 9 season. 7 dics are inside replica dragon balls, 1 disc in a dragon ball radar replica, and one in a fly nimbus. That all sit on a nice platform that cause all of them to glow like your making a wish. Boom you’re welcome.

I wish they’d re-release the Dragon boxes. I bought them when they first came out but had to sell them because of medical bills. Don’t regret why I did it but oh, I miss them. So I’d so love to be able to get them again...
Might as well just torrent them. The Dragon Box Dvds are still being released in Japan in single sets (without subs).
Funi could release them, but they don't, so don't feel obliged to play by their rules.

I can relate because healthcare is paid here in the Philippines too, which is ironic since we are one of the poorest countries in Asia and we are mostly 30 years behind on technology.

@@PerfectSuperSaiyan dude it is, especially since they marketed it has "the ultimate way to watch DBZ" (they've literally said that for ever release they done). Have you seen the original animation cells/genga or even the dragon boxes, which are derived from the original animation film, and seen how badly Funimation treated the visuals? Dude u literally bought the 2014 blurays that they did but, instead they just cut their already cropped 16:9 season sets to 4:3 and sold it you because they took advantage of your nostalgia.
But yes it isn't as visually bad as the orange box, but it wasn't worthwhile either, especially not for the 30th anniversary for an Anime as important and popular as DBZ. Dude this fandom has it literally the worst out of any anime. They are older shows and less popular shows that get better home releases than us, even from Funimation.
At this point, saying "get the Dragon Boxes" is utterly useless because they're out of print and they go for insane prices, so unless you're willing to spill thousands upon thousands of dollars for them, you're stuck with the Blu-Rays.
Personally, I'd love if we had a level set remaster blu-ray box set for Dragon Ball, DBZ and their movies. Because even if DBZ gets the perfect Blu-Ray release, that still leaves me with Dragon Ball on DVD and movies in cropped widescreen blu-rays. How and why they feel the need to tinker around with the footage for this one god damn franchise is beyond me. Everything else is released in its original screen format, but DBZ just HAS to have cropped images.

I just want a release of z where the grain is kept in and it's in true 4:3. The 30th anniversary edition I heard they just took the cropped image from the blu Ray's from 2014 and put it in 4:3.
That's definitely not what happened. It's a new, better looking remaster. The 30th anniversary is almost entirely the original 4:3 release, however the first episode was cropped due to the fact that Funimation's film of the first episode is damaged. People like geekdom threw a fit over one episode being cropped. Which is kind of unfair.
Grain removal isn't bad: It CAN be done well, and grain itself after all is just a arfacte/flaw of the production process. It's just funimation keeps being lazy and uses super automated, super strong grain removal that also wipes way detail rather then being careful about it and doing manual touchups.

Icarus Kid yeah or rerelease the Dragon Boxes but on blu ray WITH the Faulconer score included and while you’re at it let the fans give you the damn original audio masters instead of having us listen to the compressed mono sound.

So I bought the Steelbook blu-rays simply because I’ve accepted that I will never own the Dragon Boxes in my life-time and as I was watching the discs on my screen, I went to my computer to look up and compare footage from the Dragon Box sets of DBZ and footage from Dragon Ball Kai for double checking. From I can tell, yes the Steelbook blu-rays are cropped, but not by much. If anything, it’s kind of like the blue bricks for Dragon Ball where the footage is a bit cropped compared to the Dragon Box sets for Dragon Ball, but it’s not too bad. The coloring and shading doesn’t offend me that much, although there was a frame where Napa’s right eye was completely gone and that wasn’t pretty to see. All in all, it’s a fine alternative to the previous blu-ray season sets and especially the orange bricks DVDs.
Leave it to Funimation to once again screw over fans with their DB Physical releases. They continue to not listen to the criticisms. I'll wait for Toei's remasters.

Haha this is hilarious, another DBZ release, they could at least try another series like the original DB, GT, or IDK Super, not another Z release. Hell even Yo son Goku and his friends return, I'd love to see that dubbed in a steel book, but nope, just another Z release.

If everything you bought were American made and supported your neighbor then T-shirts would be 30 bucks and up. The cheap products and labor from china has you spoiled as fuck. Truth be told we're all too used to having non-stop access to cheap goods. It's not going to last. Gonna have to get used to paying more for less. TheReelSketchman because the general audience only knows dragon ball by the Z title. They are far more likely to make a sale on another Z release from a few people who haven’t seen it before just because they know about dragonball z. That’s why we keep getting the Z story in games instead of the full story as well as why the games are always titled Dragon ball fighterZ and DBZ Kakarrot. It’s what sells the most which is still no excuse to fuck over the other old series that don’t look to great today compared to the upscaled Z’s and Kai.
i wouldn't. from what i recall, they actually didn't fuck around too much with the blue and green boxes, but they probably WOULD screw up the quality if they resold either DB or GT on blu-ray.

I'm still going to be holding onto my Dragon Boxes for the foreseeable future, as it appears FUNi just can't seem to get it right and put out a non DNR'ed and oversaturated edition of DBZ.

I own the blu ray set of the 16 x 9 aspect ratio one . I know the picture have been reduced or chopped but I still enjoyed it. Especially on my 75" tv. I wont buy another set until they release it on a 4k level . We ALL HAVE TO STOP buying their repetition garbage. We're better than that. We have to hurt them financially for them to understand, no more. We are here to support Dragon ball but not like this.

You guys have no idea how good you have it. I bought the entire DB/DBZ/GT and all the movies off of a bootleg site called 24star Dragonball. They were fan subs on VCD. Bad audio that wasn't always synced and some poor video quality as well. Still loved watching them all.
Maybe Funimation also got jealous of Mill Creek Entertainment with the Ultraman Blu Ray Steelbooks and decided "Hey, we can do the exact same thing but without any of the quality!" That's just my theory anyways.
Edit: Not gonna lie though, the Steelbooks themselves look pretty damn cool

It’s insane to me that they advertised the 30th anniversary set as a once in a lifetime release, and then they quickly released these. I wish they would loose the dragon ball license.
Guess I'm holding onto my Dragon Boxes then. I knew they were gonna do this, take that supposedly "limited edition" 30th Anniversary set and break it off into separate releases. It was only a matter of time. I feel bad for those who bought that set in the hopes it was actually limited. Screwed over once again. Also $60 for a steelbook? That's a god damn ripoff.
Personally I'd just recommend saving your money and wait for Toei's ACTUAL remaster of the series. Because that release is going to become the NEW Dragon Box.
Yeah, FR. I think I'll wait for Toei's remasters, too. I just hope they are uncensored. I'm also waiting for someone to do a fan project where they take Toei's HD masters and sync the original broadcast audio for all 508 episodes (spanning across all three animes) together. If Star Wars fans can find ways to restore the theatrical cuts, I don't see why that approach couldn't work with the entire Dragon Ball saga. Only time will tell.

Doesn't ultimately matter. Dragon Ball has sadly sort of ran its course and been bled dry. All of these decades-old franchises are just starting to feel long in the tooth. Whether you are talking about Star Wars, Star Trek, Godzilla, Dragon Ball.....this stuff just feels completely milked at this point.
Every new iteration is like a somewhat weaker re-hash of something we've had before, but done in a more flashy way.
Sequel Trilogy is a flashy, inferior rehash of the original trilogy. SO many elements of Super just felt like flashy, less creative re-visits of popular elements of Z.
We're in an age now where I get much more value, entertainment, and reward from being a My Hero Academia fan than I ever got from being a Dragon Ball fan, unfortunately. That candle has pretty much burned out.

Funimation doesn't have access to film prints of DB and GT, they have digitapes, which are standard definition. Putting them on a Blu Ray wouldn't help because the footage is natively in a potato resolution.
Is Frieza's name supposed to be misspelled on the back of the purple cover? Because it's correct on the orange one.
I have a theory on why it's taking Toei a long time in releasing they're Blu-Ray Masters other than it being done frame by frame, I think it's possible that they're making deals in order to possibly gain access to the broadcast audio for each episode, even though it's just a theory that's something I'm personally hoping for and maybe that's just wishful thinking

I get so tired of the so called "Dragon Ball Elite" looking down their nose at us peasants for enjoying the products that are released for the manga and anime that we love. I've seen several TH-camrs and forum mods saying that these steelbooks are just the 2013 Blurays in 4:3 aspect ratio. That's untrue and completely misleading. As a matter of fact, after watching the entire first steelbook set, I can say that the only episode that was missing picture info was the first one. After that, it was in true 4:3 aspect ratio and in some scenes it was less cropped than the Almighty Dragon Boxes. I remember when the aspect ratio was the only thing everyone cared about. Now that they've essentially put out a version that has corrected that, it's bad because the sky isn't green, the grain isn't grainy enough, the colors are too much like colors, and there's not enough black lines. I don't get this community. I honestly believe that the Dragon Ball community would complain and whine about any and everything.
Look, if you're a "casual fan" whatever the hell that means, and you want to watch the series as you remember it from Cartoon Network with the music you remeber and such, then this release is for you. It's not cropped, and it's amazing to watch. If you even want to watch in Japanese then this release is for you. It doesn't have the Japanese title cards so I guess that's another reason to crap on it, but it gets the job done. Plus, the cases are beautiful and look amazing.

@@ajaxmaxbitch Nope, but they're worth $40. Which is what I paid for each individual one. BTW, seasons 1-6 of this set are getting hard to find and most of them go for more than $60 now.

$350 was a bargain for the 30th anniversary edition of DBZ because it had way more limited edition stuff
I would like to see a 4K Edition of DBZ with no cropping whatsoever and original film grain with no fake grain added. I would like to project that through my projector as if it was the film itself.
Why must they deny us? They know what we want, what we deserve, and they refuse.

The 30th anniversary release was exaggerated by fans who called it bad. People expect a perfect release, but deny that the original film the show is printed on has been damaged. You can't get a perfect release that doesn't attempt to remaster it.
Can we please get a proper sub, ratio, grain, and resolution in one set? Just once 😂
Funimation why can’t you just listen and just give us DBZ with actual true 4:3, with grain intact, in addition with the 3 audio tracks (English with US music, English with Japanese music, and Japanese), add some good bonus content, and have them all available separately and/or in a whole pack? How hard is that to do?!
Please keep in mind
their voiceovers use voices that flatten the characters to the point where most people don't know them,
the context changes double down on the flattening,
they can't even count past 20 ( /watch?v=xFK7mDVqOlg ),
they got rid of a least-objectionable voice actor,
and
they're happy to keep using a guy who knows so little about Goku that he thinks he's the actual Goku despite destroying the character entirely.
*You're not going to get an actual remastery of Dragon Ball Z.*
Just as a side note, I wanna say the blue and green brick sets are close enough to perfect as DVD releases (if you ignore funimation's shitty voiceovers). I wouldn't bother worrying about getting another release there. They've got the actual original 4:3, grains, colors, and Japanese audio. The only shortcomings would be the occasional censorship (like Bulma's nipples being blocked by a glare on the window when Yamucha unintentionally peeks in on her taking a shower).
Im a hardcore dragon ball collector. That being said, I didn't buy that godawful release last year, and I'm not buying this God awful shit this year. Either make a perfect release like they got in Japan or stop trying to sell me the same shit over and over and calling it a remaster. Cutting off 1/3 of the image and putting a filter doesn't make it a remaster. I've seen bootleg dvds with higher quality than what these ass hats make

I just spent $30 ordering Manga Entertainment’s DBS Broly now I’m going to have to spend another $150 buying a region free blu ray player just to watch DBS on my TV again as I saw it in theater’s. It should not cost this must and be this hard to watch a movie I already saw on the big screen yet Funimation makes that way. Seriously WTF do they want to encourage people to pirate?!
My favorite release is the Kai blu-ray set released in parts. Some of them are a bit of expensive but they did a damn good job on it.
And watch them never release season 6 and up because of low sales.

Are you serious about the series being remastered by Toei? if so, would you recommend selling the dragon boxes in anticipation of dropping value?
Just because Geekdom says something is happening, doesn't mean it is. For whatever reason, they could get cancelled before release, or it could be Japanese only.
My recommendation would be to either copy the Dvd files onto a hard drive, or torrent the files, then sell the Dragon Boxes anyway.

Funimation failed again. Funimation/Toei did not restore the original color and necessary grain to given DBZ the presentation it deserves like the Dragon Boxes. The 4:3 aspect ratio in these sets is still not precise and zoomed in a bit too. Save your money. Shame on Funimation. These sets after sets all b.s.. money making schemes.
I am planning on getting the Dragon Box sets soon, but who’s knows? Maybe the Blu-Ray Steelbooks will actually be like the Dragon Boxes or the Level Sets. I might be wrong, but just let me not give up hope for now, okay? I’ll just have to wait and see just in case.
