The picture is great of this version (not as good as the level sets) but a lot better than the horrible orange bricks or the other BLu-ray release).
But people are always complaining and wining... no matter how good it will be...
Noo it's not 4:3... nooo it has a lot or noise in the picture...it's to dark... etc. etc.. this version fixed almost all those problems... and now AGAIN no the colours are a bit off sometimes.. it's always something

With the way Funimation has been throughout 2019... I'm not surprised that they're shipping defunct products.

I want Viz Media to own the anime rights. They'll probably make a far better release then Funimation's past releases. Basically the only way to get DBZ in 4:3 and in better quality is getting the (now expensive) Dragon Box sets and the old Funimation Singles DVDs. Both out of prints versions...

Faulconer score has never been included due to contractual issues. Aside from that and the extras, it's not that hard. Toei's masters are goddamn beautiful, and it's a crying shame.

The real answer is simpler. They haven't worked on the content in years and are just repackaging it over and over. The only cost on their part is manufacturing and distribution.

I've got the Kai blu ray version with the Bruce Faulconer score, found it somewhere on the internet like 2 years ago. For me this is the best version and it's a fan made one.... So in other words... Fans make better versions than Funimation.

As far as I'm concerned the dragon boxes are the definitive versions of the series. Unfortunately they are hard to find and extremely overpriced.
I would like to note: Piccolo isn't *supposed* to be light green indefinitely, it depends on how the colors were on the animation cels, which surprisingly are *very* bad looking at times color wise at least, there are instances with Goku having a blood red gi despite the fact that it needs to be more orange. And another important thing: The Dragon Boxes are NOT accurate color wise to how it's supposed to look, due to the fact that it used Toei's original filmprints, which in 2003 when they released in Japan, was already very degraded. Kai is also not accurate because of how inconsistent the colors are overall. The closest Dragon Ball Z home release color wise when it comes to comparing it to the Original Japanese Broadcast is the Level Sets, which *at times* look IDENTICAL color wise, so use the Level Sets as reference points for color.
People who knew better tried to warm these buyers, but they didn't listen, that's on them.
Just order the original Japanese ones. Much more collection worthy.

I was 6 years old when dbz was broadcasted in France in the late 80's and believe me or not, i've still most of the sayan, namek, cell and boo arcs recorded on vhs.

6:01 That's not the Orange Bricks, that's the Dragon Box on the left, you can tell by the green-ish sky, which you see very often on the set, as well as the fact that the left and the right have the same aspect ratio as you can see, but the Orange Bricks and 30th anniversary Blu-Ray have different aspect ratios.

Out of curiosity, is there a collection of the Ocean Dub available? After the Vic Mignogna situation I have been wanting a cleansing of sorts. On our TV station over here back in the day when DBZ was the hottest new thing, we started off With ocean, then there was a voice change partially through Namek(Mainly Goku and Vegeta). The original Vegeta got reinstated during the Android saga but Sean Schemmel stayed. I want to rewatch the Ocean Dub to cleanse meself of the lies and deciet from the current dub cast of Dragon Ball. I feel like I betrayed the Ocean Dub, and the the Vic Mignogna situation proves this. Goku became a lie to me and its Sean Schemmels fault, the funimation cast have in turn, betrayed me and so many others. I'm sorry Vic, sorry for not digging deeper about the voice change and for being ignorant of the truth behind Chris Sabat and company, I just gotta put that out there. I should find Vic on social media to apologise to him there, actually. I wonder if he has Facebook?
Well actually, the original Vegeta, Brian Drummond, didn't get reinstated during the Artificial Human saga, that was just Chris Sabat doing an impersonation of him (and a bad one at that). But, to answer your question about an Ocean collection, yes, there is. It's called: Dragon Ball Z: The Rock The Dragon Edition, it came out in 2013. It was released by Funi and contains all 53 episodes, plus the Toonami versions of the first three movies. It's was a collectors item so they didn't make many of them and they're out of print now, just like the Dragon Boxes. It actually has the uncensored versions of episodes 1, 2 & 3 where they mention death instead of "being sent to another dimension". It doesn't have the next episode preview for episode 10 because they skipped in on the original syndication run, both episode 9 & 10 have the preview for episode 11 because of this, you can only get the preview for episode 10 on the Australian Madman dvd singles. It's the first, and only time the 1997 Saban dub of The Tree Of Might has been released on dvd, the one with the funny censored Gohan and Ian James Corlett as Goku, rather than the uncut version with Peter Kelamis. It comes with a book that talks about the history of the dub and its impact on pop culture, its censorship, and all sorts of other cool stuff. Well, actually, it doesn't come with a book, it IS a book, the discs are in the last pages of it, stored in cardboard like the 30th Anniversary set so your discs might have some scratches, but not as bad as the 30th Anniversary set I assure you, plus it's a might, not a definite. Since it's out of print it'll go for a high price, but if you have the cash then go for it, it's worth it. There is no Japanese audio, but that's okay, that wasn't the point of the set, it's pretty much Funi's only other great release beside the Dragon Boxes and the Level Sets. Big plus, it's in 4:3, exactly how it ran on syndication, exactly how it was seen on Cartoon Network's Toonami block, just like in 1996. If you're that big a fan of Ocean's cast, like me, then this is right up your alley so go for it.
@@bleedingfromtheanus240 Yeah, Peter Kalamis, Brian Drummond and Scott McNeil are my BIG 3, of Dragon Ball Z. The episode when Piccolo fought 17... OMFG!..... He was like Bruce Lee on a MAJOR HIGH! Scott McNeil's vocal range is so impressive and Brian Drummond is so Snake-like in his performance, but when he screamed and also when his voice deepens as he angrily, he just sound psychotic. Peyer sounds like the all around nice guy in his performance. But to his credit, he was my first Goku but for me, lasted til the voice change on Namek. The episode when Frieza assume his James Cameron's Alien-like form was the last one before the voice change. But know this, during the Android Saga, Brian Drummond was reinstated for us over here. I live in Ireland, so things were different for us and Vegeta's return to true form was GLORIOUS!]XD
I could never stand the Ocean versions, but I just cannot bare to hear the Funi voices knowing how big of assholes they are. I watched Super since 2015 on livestream so I am now used to the japanese voices honestly, Naowaza is my Goku for all I am concerned.

And as for Japanese Goku, Masako Nozawa isn't a scumbag thankfully. I'd highly recommend watching the Japanese version of the original Dragon Ball and continuing all the way through the franchise, you'll get used to the voices and even prefer them, the series creator Akira Toriyama personally handpicked Nozawa to be the voice of Goku, and going from Kid Goku to adult Goku, you really get to hear how much more mature she makes Goku sound during his adulthood after deepening her voice. Trust me, you'll love Freeza's voice. Again, start off with the original Dragon Ball, the go to Z and the movies, TV Specials and the Plan To Eradicate The Saiyans OVA on kissanime, you can also watch the original Dragon Ball movies too, GT and its TV Special, then the 2008 OVA, you don't need to watch Episode Of Bardock but you can if you want to, then Battle Of Gods and Revival Of F, then Dragon Ball Super, and then Super Broly. Try to find Dragon Ball, Z and GT in Dragon Box quality online, you can buy the Dragon Boxes for Z if you have the money. Trust me, you'll gain a deeper appreciation for the series like me.

That's really sad. I seriously considered buying this as a birthday present to myself. I'm glad I hesitated.
Back in the day I paid about $100 for a guy to make ALL of Dragonball, DBZ, GT, and the Movies, all on a collection of VHS tapes, and the artwork he put together for every one was excellent. You put all the tapes together and they even formed pictures. It was just something I bought to decorate the room though, they weren't a collection or anything.
This is really insulting to Toei, and they are missing out on big money from all of this.

Why not just release the "Lazy box" and give the fans unedited 4:3 footage? Its by far the easiest, laziest, way they could do this. Plus, its exactly what the fans want.
I want to offer a few pieces of information from what I know through forums and the fact that I own this piece of crap: the first 4 episodes have rather excessive cropping (actually only the first episode has excessive cropping, episodes 2-4 just has odd frame adjustment at times), but episode 5 and onwards are completely fine, there is most certainly no censorship as the footage has been uncut since 2007 with the Orange Bricks, and the grain is indeed artificial as evident as early as FUNimation's blog post in April which showcases how their remastering process actually caused detail to be lost in certain scenes due to heavy DNR.
In case anyone's wondering why I own this crap, it's because I linked the page to my grandparents so they wouldn't waste over a thousand dollars or so on getting me the FUNimation Dragon Boxes again after they were stolen from me over three years ago.
Why spend any dollar on dvds when i can watch it all on the internet for free
Funimation can't even do DVD subtitles. The english subtitles never match the dubs. Just lazy
I mean.. We're talking about a company that constantly shits on the franchise with immense context changes. To expect GOOD THINGS would be like sprinting into a mine field for half an hour and expecting to walk away in one piece.

Let's not buy any of the Funimation Merch and hope that it would start a boycott and just watch the e-z way of watching our anime shows on the streaming websites. Take my advice and make it happen!
Only collection worth having is the Dragon Box collection. Far more pros than cons. True 4:3, uncropped, all detail visible. Only cons is the color is a tad bit muted but, nothing, and the audio output not being the best, but other than that, the Dragon Box is undefeated.
Good thing I'm saving for a laptop, a diamond deal already! No time for trash.
They've been doing Dragon Ball dirty for 25 years, so this doesn't surprise me. They know people will buy this shit up no matter what, so they do things half-assed and cut corners. I was really excited when they first announced this set because I knew how much potential it had. Then they go and screw it all up again. I'm just glad I have the Dragon Boxes (which are still inferior to the ones from Japan for the record).
I prefer dark green Piccolo tbh, I don't really like how "colorful" Kai looks.
For blu-ray discs to come scratched someone had to do it intentionally or dropped them on some sandpaper like surface and dragged it across. Blu-ray discs are not easily scratched like DVDs and CDs can be. I only have the orange box sets for DBZ and that'll be the only version I ever get unless another studio gains the distribution rights to the series.

I remember spending almost that amount of money for La Blue Girl Live DVD collection almost 10 years ago.
The difference with me was that I never regretted that decision considering how hard those DVDs were to find.

YellowFlash 2, I just want to personally thank you for keeping us up to date with everything as I'd have no idea what funimation (and their actors) would be doing behind the scenes without your videos. I'd most likely of bought this collectors edition if it wasn't for your news reports about their shady goings on.

Going back to the orange box sets from a few years ago, can someone please explain to me WHY did Funimation crop them? Not sure what the deal was with the white speckling but I'm 100% sure it wasn't present in the original broadcast.
