Thanks Geekdom for shouting this out. I already knew this history in and out - I literally lived and have the Pioneer DVDs, the early Funi BiLinguals, and on down the line. The funny part for me as a teen getting these was that I typically had no idea, until I popped them in that was, just what was actually going to be the product. But man, the almost accidental discovery through them of what Japanese DBZ was like was one of the greatest thing that ever happened for me.
That's why I feel grateful to being raised in Latin America, No Karens in companies saying what is good or not for us, no censorship, all the original material. With the explicit violence and even the soft erotic moments in the Dragon Ball saga and other animes. Even people from Spain in Europe prefer to see the Latinoamerican version of DBZ because is the most accurate to the Japanese version as many of them said.
When Geekdom accidently said Funi stopped making orange bricks near the end, I was thinking, (no they didn't. I saw the orange bricks at Walmart last year in 2022. Now they're bundling 2 volumes together)
I got the the Dragon boxes, Blue rays and pioneer sets on DVD and vhs. I find I watch the ocean dub sets and Ocean dub of the first three movies most. The worlds strongest ocean dub uncut is my all time favorite DBZ movie 🎉
A very informative video. You know you messed up a home video release when fans have to make a 2-hour history guide and end up overwhelmed by the sheer stupidity from Toei and Shueisha.
I've heard mentions about what if a company like discotek would get the rights to actually fix it. Sure the average Joe doesn't care but these bautique brands usually will make an effort cause they know who they sell to
Discotek will never get the rights to Dragon Ball. Even if Crunchyroll (which FUNi got absorbed into last year) were to die tomorrow, it's not feasible for Discotek to buy the rights to Dragon Ball. They just wouldn't have the money for it all.
I prefer the level set blu ray with the grain instead of the torrent “fixed” version thats in the internet, i did download episodes 35 to 39 just to have then on 1080p HD
Wont lie i bought all the orange bricks and still remember going out and picking each one up. I know they sucked and i knew then but was all i could get at the time! Even now you cant get a perfect release its sad, we rely on fans to make hte best releases xD. Thank god for fans!
12:00 madman from Australia region 4 had an uncut re-dub of the first 13 episodes of dragon ball. Funimation never licensed this slight difference edited due to licensing restrictions
Funimation fucked over did with there releases,it still sucks the ultimate uncut edition of Dbz was canceled and I watched it on Cartoonnetwork in 2005 when I was in high school.
@@JEFFMAN901. Universal has Hulk & they share him with Disney, not Paramount. 2. Kidmark got absorbed into Lionsgate, which extended their ownership of the distribution rights of OG DB until 2009, not '06. 3. Monica Rial didn't take over for Bulma in the English dubs until 2010 when they dubbed Kai. Before her, it was Tiffany Vollmer. Vollmer's in the redubs of Z episodes 1-67 & the first 3 Z movies, not Rial. Admittedly, here he may have misspoke, but still. 4. The Orange Brick masters _were_ a remaster, it was just poorly done with the DVNR being cranked up way too much, the colors being too bright & oversaturated, & what not. 5. You CAN have a high def remaster on a DVD, it would just have to be downscaled to 480p for the format, which it was. 6. A dual layer DVD can go up to 7-8GB. 7. Originally, the Toonzai block was owned by 4Kids & was called the CW 4Kids block until 4Kids went bankrupt & Saban bought the block from them. 4Kids originally were the ones censoring Kai for that block & since Sean Schemmel worked for them in NYC as a voice actor, they had him rerecord some lines as Goku, King Kai, & maybe some other characters to censor certain terms or words. 8. 4Kids gave up the rights to Pokemon back in 2006 & ever since, the Pokemon Company International's been dubbing the series & movies with a different dubbing studio in NYC. 9. 4Kids is no longer around. In 2011, they were sued by TV Tokyo & Nihon Ad Systems because they alleged that 4Kids didn't pay them the right amount of royalties for Yugioh based on some agreements that 4Kids allegedly made without them for the franchise. Eventually, they'd win the case, but it exhausted a lot of their money, but they'd end up filing for bankruptcy. In the wake of that, part of their business was sold off to Konami where they rebranded it as 4K Media & Konami uses them to dub & release Yugioh media in English. 4Kids would rebrand as 4Licensing Corp, but would eventually sink & they've been gone as a company since 2017. 10. DNR = Digital Noise Reduction, not Dynamic. 11. FUNi didn't change the results of the poll they did back in 2013 for what aspect ratio people wanted the show in. They just ignored it because of how well the Orange Bricks sold.
A shame for US fans, here in Mexico we got all anime uncensored in a kids channel similar to Cartoon Network. Even DBZ was uncensored. But here we never got home media since Dub was owned by Televisa. Even now there’s no home media we watch it by buying pirated series of course 1080p but pirated.
Part 2 will be up tonight

The most accurate version to the Japan version is always the better version. I always hate when they water down anime like that
Fun times, I don't know why I think the DVD release history is so interesting, but it is ha

History repeats it self

OG Broly and Fusion Reborn are my next faves then the ocean dub of tree of might

Love these types of videos
I didn’t realize that pioneer dbz movies were valuable! I have all three of the first 3 dragon ball x pioneer dvds!!!!
28:17 can confirm.
SAD BUT TRUEEEEE!
1:00:24 4Kids doesn't dub Pokemon anymore. It's dubbed by Pokemon International
I prefer the level set blu ray with the grain instead of the torrent “fixed” version thats in the internet, i did download episodes 35 to 39 just to have then on 1080p HD

I’m here
Who did the music for Kai? The score is amazing, specially in the Frieza saga
Initially Kenji Yamamoto until the score was replaced with re-used Kikuchi tracks. Now, the Yamamoto blu-rays go for a fair bit on the after-market.
Geekdom needs to hit up more Toy TH-camrs!
We’ll continue bringing him on
Oh dang
@Geekdom101,
The Ultimate Uncuts were finished, but were never finished releasing on dvd.
Funimation fucked over did with there releases,it still sucks the ultimate uncut edition of Dbz was canceled and I watched it on Cartoonnetwork in 2005 when I was in high school.
The fact that Geekdom can have so much knowledge, yet get some basic facts wrong is baffling to me.
What does he get wrong??
