I can't believe they made a gay character whose entire personality isn't being gay. In fact he's actually one of the best and most memorable characters in the game. Props to the writing team man.
When I first saw that scene:
"O_O...well...okay then. Good for him, good for him."
But Dion stands out so much for me in that he's the only one that slugs it out with Clive's Ifrit and *still* has fight in him left--whereas Clive just steamrolls anyone else that forces Ifrit out.
@Ilyak1986 Bahamut has always been known for being an abolsute beast in FF, and I'm glad that 16 didn't change that

not many have a giant brain like mine, but she definitely was hallucinated by Ultima to buff up Clive and take over his body. All good , tiny brain is a fate to many - no shame to that.
At the end of the demo I called "this game's Cersei." I stand by that, and this Cetsei had a satisfying death.

For clarification, Olivier wasn't a fake kid. If you check the ATL it tells you that by the time of his death, there was little to nothing left of the kid in him, meaning he must've been a real boy before becoming possessed or corrupted.
The Bahamut arc is hands down the best part of the story. If FF16 wins best voice acting, it’ll because of the cutscenes in that arc.
Hell yea it is, I dare say it's probably my favourite section of gaming period.
It is for me too. The voice acting, the characters, the story itself, the boss fight, the reunion that has been building for the entire game... I can't express how quickly that arc flew up there in my favourite gaming moments.
And I am a realistic person, I'm not in the pool of "FFXVI is the greatest game of all time", it has a lot of issues and things that bother me, but the characters and the voice acting has never ever been one of those things. The arc was phenomonal. That Bahamut fight really is the best boss fight in the game.
I also love the meaning and power behind the fact that Dion is actually their half-brother now, (as is Olivier), since their mother married his father. So that entire moment (minus Jill) is actually all members of one family.
I loved the Titan arc too much honestly, but Bahamut’s is definitely a very close second for me

I can see why so many people say this is their favourite fight. Without spoiling anything, I do think the last one is just as good, but Bahamut has so much history and is such a fan favourite that seeing him like this was always going to take the cake
Ehhhhhh, the last fight felt like "they're trying to replicate the Bahamut fight but going a bit tryhard". Not to mention there's the lack of "we need to do this correctly and save Dion too".
In contrast, the last fight just felt like "okay, and now we just go through the motions of the standard end boss."

Agree, as someone who haven't played FF14 I find Ultimalius to be way better.
Dion is such a great character. That scene in the throne room is one of the best in the game.
Dion confronting his father in the throne room was perfect. It's my favorite scene in the entire game and rocketed up to being in my top 10 favorite video game scenes ever. What an amazing game. Starfield, Baldur's Gate 3, or Spider-Man 2 will have to be an absolute masterpiece to not make FF 16 be my Game of the Year.
Edit: Welp, it turns out that Baldur's Gate 3 is an absolute masterpiece. lol Sorry FF16 but GOTY has to go to BG3. I still love ya tho!

Yup. That cutscene of Dion confronting his father is my favorite in the game so far.

Dion was such a phenomenal secondary character! Incredibly tragic and stoic in a non-try hard way.
I just finished the game last night. They did a great job with building Dion's character in the background of the main story. You can definitely see the GoT influence in this aspect
EDIT: OK i was completely wrong about this after doing his later side missions.
The same reason why Joshua lost control during Phoenix Gate. These guys holding onto freaking nukes with a sensitive trigger. This godlike power packed into a human package.

Dion is straight up my favorite character because he's extremely complex but also the get shit done type of dude.
Dion is an example of a perfect gay character. He is gay and that's that. It's not his entire identity, it doesn't dictate every single decision he makes because there are a million bigger things going on. One of my favorite characters in the game, liked him from the moment he showed up until the end. Good job writers.

Just to explain, that wasn't actually a fake kid. He was real, just completly corrupted by Ultima. The Active real time Lore explains it in more detail.
That was Clives, Dions and Joshua's real half brother. But as we know those corrupted by Ultima like the Akashic disintegrate into dust instead of Dying like humans.
It's not fully explained how he got corrupted but my explination would be that toy he carries around was slowly corrupting him and whispering thoughts in his ear his whole life. If you take a close look at that toy in cutscenes it would have glowing blue eyes just like Ultima.
So what you’re saying is we watched Dion brutally impale a child on screen? Sick.

I don't think Anabella was under Ultima's control for a second. She was just a crazy piece of crazy.
She was definitely being manipulated by Ultima, I mean he took over control of her son to bend the empire to his will. I just don't think she was aware that her son was a thrall for a monster.

She was manipulated by Ultima but was never under his control. Her Will, while a terrible person, was strong and I believe Ultima could only drive her deeper into her madness to manipulate her.
My theory on why Olivier was able to be controlled and become Akashic was because Anabella coddled him so much he was never able to develop a will of his own adlnd thus he could be controlled. If not for their father Joshua could have been the same, Erwin did chastise her for always Coddling Joshua.

I am glad to see Yoshi and the team really knock it out of the park with this game. They really put Final Fantasy back on the map.

@eltigreduarte8977 I think they'll make a dlc in all honesty. There's quite a few directions they can take it in. I'm not quite sure I would want a whole sequel game, though

thing is , she probably couldn't. She was hallucinating, the way how she reacted to kid's death and to Joshua afterwards, is like she couldnt see it was him. Ultima mentally abuses everyone just to make sure Clive is most powerful vessel.

I like how the best character in the game, Dion, is the only character thats like hey we should kill Annabella.

The scene with their mother was so, so perfect. I didnt expect them to handle her that way, but boy was it cathartic. I was screaming at my tv the whole time lmao
I love how at the end of the day, she didn't have some kind of redemption or sympathetic backstory. She's just a piece of shit through and through. It's kind of refreshing.

I personally was hoping that she would reach out and then getting crushed by falling debris. I wasnt satisfied that she basically went on her own terms.

yeah. FF has that effect on people. i mean, there's literaly a crying compilation for some of the games.
It is how it works with FF series I also was shocked when Ifrit "Killed" the Pheonix and in XV with all it's flaws I still cryied with the end and that's just to mention the latests examples
I rarely cry, it has to really hit home for me to do so. FF7 (You know the scene) FFXs ending. But man this game had so many of those moments, Bryan and Clive meeting the first time, Clive realizing he was Ifrit, Jill coming to terms with what she did and what it turned her into, Clive and Joshua hugging, Clive and Jill towards the end in a quest, and the ending...damn man the ending with the flash back...Yoshi P and team new what they were doing and where to cut those damn onions.
Love the Louisoix reference with that Bahamut fight. What an amazing nod to peak kino

The DNA of FF14 is all over this game. Just another example is how the titan music is like a remixed more industrial version of Under the Weight, Titan's theme in FF14

This might be my favorite line read from Clive’s VA in the entire game and he’s pretty great throughout the game. But the way he went nuts here just underlines how important Joshua and keeping him safe is to him
i think this is the best game fight of this year. it started up so epic too, that GIGACHAD clive just walk in front tanking the megaflare with a wall of fire gave me goosebumps.
Clive is such a badass protagonist. He truly lives up to his title as shield.
Dion is some of the best representation I've ever seen, I love him so much, what a noble guy ❤
Dion is definitely a case study on how to do representation correctly. When just about all of the association with the character is "holy shit he's awesome!" and then "oh, right, there's Terrence".

Yeah, because they don't make his sexuality central to his personality. They definitely wrote him without "representation" in mind, so he actually feels like a genuine person with depth and not some shallow token character. For many really dumb reasons Hollyweird fumbles that time and time again.

Couldn't agree more. I absolutely loved Dions arc. If I had one complaint about it would be I would like to have seen more Terrance. Not like romantic type stuff as I think the game does a great job on that front but more of Terrances personality. I want to know what the man who captured Dion's heart is like because he must
be something special as Dion himself is amazing.

I like how at the end of the day, after all the God slaying, space fighting, and apocalyptic destruction, Clive still struggles to open some doors.... and that okay. We all hate when you try to open a door but it's way harder than you thought it would be.
God of War syndrome. Kratos killed the entire greek pantheon. Still struggle to open a chest.
It's superman syndrome. It's not that they struggle to open doors, they are struggling not to simply send the door flying into next Final Fantasy game, or send the chest lid into space...at least that's my head cannon.

It is a crime that the theme that plays when you fight Bahamut in space isn’t in the music player at the hideaway, I collected all of them to only be disappointed at the end 😢

I feel like the game peaks here tbh. I personally found each subsequent boss either not able to reach the same hype levels, or they are underwhelming.
This is my favorite music from this game's amazing soundtrack. Such a perfect symphony to match bahamuts chaotically beautiful assult of attacks.

Cinematic clashes.
Cinematic scenes.
Great background music.
Super flashy.
And my imo, personal fav, the battles are somewhat dragged out but the hype does not fade.

The battle lengthiness is not so bad if you're the one actively playing and experiencing the adrenaline of not trying to die

Even before this moment in the game I already loved every single second that Dion was on screen, but after this part he probably became my favorite character
I wish he was part of the main cast (well he kinda is, but you get what I'm saying)
Dion isn't a gay character, he's a character who happens to be gay. His entire characterization doesn't revolve around that one single aspect of his being. He's not a token character. He has agency, qualities, faults, motivations, etc... Not ALL he does revolves around Terence. He's important to him of course, but that's not all there is to Dion.
But I guess the same can be said about Clive and Jill. They obviously care about each other but not EVERYTHING about each one of them revolves entirely around the other person.
This game certainly has its issues and low points, but some parts are probably among the highest points ever reached by the FF series as a whole.

Just for people who don’t understand. The child Olivier was real. He was corrupted like an Akashic and controlled by Ultima. He was birthed like a normal child and when killed faded into either from his corruption. Unless I’m wrong of course.
One of the greatest fights cinematically ever. Just finished the game today and the end had me in tears almost.

If anyone argues why this game should be Goty direct them no further than the Bahamut chapter. The lead up storming the castle and the fights up to that point and then the fight itself and the ending cinematics? On another level. Totk should be 2nd imo and i love both but the scale, story, gameplay, cinematics, VA, graphics of this game all of it combined.. I dont think you can make a case for any other game this year no way.
I love this game, but don't think it'll be my GOTY. There's a couple of other games I'm looking forward to. But damn, the music, the fights, the cinematics...everything in this game is amazing. The story has some really good high points too. The Dion/Bahamut arc being one of them.
@shadowace940 Thats respectable. I just think this game checks all the boxes of a great game whereas some other games that will be up for Goty this year will still be great but be missing in a few areas that this game does not miss on.

I think it's very boring and the combat is very shallow. Nice looking but not really substantial.
the fact that Ultima wants to absorb the power of the eikons through clive who can posses every ikons power is JUST like ffxiv, the ultima weapon is a robot machine who can house all the eikons and use theyre power for great destruction, and this take of ultima is amazing, i knew as soon as i saw ultima and that we could absorb eikons what his plan was! VERY nice
why does every streamer forget that ifrit has all of clives core skills after the garuda fight + a double magic burst. asmon literally forgot about the magic button entirely

Guy who said Megaflare isn't good doesn't understand how this battle system works. LV4 megalfare followed by stagger is by far the best damage in this game.

@Keln02 it's more of a playstyle than optimization for damage, BUT there is someone on TH-cam who has a video of ng+ killing all hunt marks. He uses odin's lvl 5 zantetsuken, and he executes without it looking or feeling clunky. It's pretty damn cool, lol
Very iconic that Clive said his famous line "It's Eikon Time!" as he protected Joshua and Jill from Bahamut's Mega Flare.

easily my favorite sequence in the game going from finally confronting annabella to Kaiju meets DBZ fight. Masterpiece of a game
Clive screaming “Yield!” while punching Bahamut in space really tickled me pink
3:21:26 just a tip for anyone who might not have considered it, when you are given control of an Eikon, take a few seconds to check your abilities In the pause menu if your interested in any extra moves available to you that weren’t explicitly listed in the pop-ups during Eikon fights.
Asmongold went the whole fight barely using super useful abilities like Ifrits circle dash-sprint ability and more importantly Phoenix and Ifrit Risen’s volley where can target many targets/projectiles simultaneously.
I’ve found whoever they given me control of the Eikon… there’s at least 1 or 2 abilities on scale with Clive’s normal (non-Eikon) abilities (lunge, slam, burning blade and charged shot equivalent that the game doesn’t layout for you like it doesn’t with Eikon-like ability(spitfire for example.)

I'm PRETTY sure the game did tell ya at one point "hey, pretty much all of Clive's abilities are now on Ifrit." And I'm sure of it because the moment I saw that, lunge was my mid-short distance gap closer on Ifrit just as it already was years ago with base Clive. I get what you're saying but it's not like the multi projectile was that useful.
I wasn’t saying it as like Asmon did anything or “played wrong”… I was simply trying to give an example and reminder to people who might not realize all the extra options there are. If people still choose to play a specific way and prefer specific abilities… great as long as they are having fun right? I just wanted people who might not have realized there were a decent more moves available than it explicitly tells us about to know they can easily take a look if they are interested.
I know I enjoyed incorporating more moves I found from the moves list after I checked it. Backdraft mainly is a fun one I think I learned by checking the list.

You are correct, Olivier was a real kid who went akashic (hence why he leaves no body behind). Becasue he has no will, no thoughts, no consciousness, Ultima was able to possess him.

Love how every streamer I watch has the same reaction to Zettaflare as I did when I played it for the first time. Just absolutely mindblown by the sheer spectacle.
Regarding their mom, Ultima's main motive was to sever bonds and strip away Clive's consciousness. It's never really explained what happened to her. But she's a little crazy already, so it was probably easy for him to manipulate her enough to make her see Joshua as some monster, maybe suggest some actions she could take like he did with Dion, and ultimately neck herself out of fear. She also has "royal blood" as well, so Ultima probably had some control of her no matter what, so it was easier to trick her, especially since Clive has been entranced multiple times already.
Nah she just crazy. Ultima only did his thing after she went to the empire to mess with Dion.
She might have just been so stubborn that she couldn’t accept that she was wrong and served the big bad, so therefore Joshua must be a false illusion.
@@MadPutz I think she never knew of Ultima's existence at any point. The moment her second son was killed and she saw Joshua alive broke her mentally. She very likely knew nothing like Dion's dad.

The entire Twinside subplot up until Bahamut boss battle is peak Final Fantasy experience. Also, Dion is just a very very well-written character.
Ill be honest didn't think the duchess had it in her thought she would waver in the face of death, too bad she didn't have enough conviction to stick by and love her family.
I think she loved power, ambition and the delusion of the purity of her royal blood line. So, the only good thing she ever did was birthing Clive and Joshua.
Dion is a prime example of how a gay person should be represented in a story
I love that they did the strike against Bahamas from ff14 in ff16. Now that is a well placed fan service.
I just did the Bahamut fight last night myself and while I still personally think the Titan fight was better, fighting in space with Joshua was fucking FIRE. God I love this game

You should do a reaction to a combo mad on this game Asmongold. Just so you can get a general idea of just how deep this combat system really is. True veterans of this genre don't have nearly enough exposure and they're the one's that should be getting review copies. They would generate so much hype if people saw more than just basics. I believe your mind would be blown by the possibilities in these character action games.
It's honestly a shame that most have no knowledge of how this genre is intended to be played. So they're always wholly misrepresented from a gameplay perspective and wrote off as just tedious and basic attack button abusers. Doesn't help that there's not much incentive to actually learn though. The games unfortunately aren't meant to be souls clones, so you can finish with only the bare minimum.
IMO it actually hurts a game when you have TH-cam critics like Skill Up or journalists being seen as a reputable source and they can't even acclimate to the fundamentals.
This game is meant to be played however to player sees fit. There is no one “way for the game to be played” for this game since that’s quite literally the combat appeal. Being able to choose how you want to battle.
Skill up point out only and only valid critism.

@@waifuhunter9709 It is FF. It's as FF as any game, if not more than FF13 or FF15. It has absolutely everything that makes it FF from the aesthetics to the themes. FF has never been about gameplay, because every FF changes gameplay heavily.
FF16 is one of the pinnacles of FF right alongside 4, 6, 7, and 10.

Which gives a negative impression to the gamer that is not familiar with the genre, and would be ultimately detrimental toit's success. Luckily that hasn't been the case for this game however, but I'm sure there are plenty of people that listened to someone like Skill Up that was undecided on giving it a shot.
I stopped listening to him after his Lost Judgment review, when he couldn't even grasp the most basic systems of its gameplay. Didn't even know you can increase your health, and still... opinions from critics like him influence others. That is inarguably an issue.

There were plenty within the comment section that disagreed with his overall outlook on the game, but were still able to enjoy the game for themselves. I don’t even remember him really speaking negatively about the combat, but I may have to rewatch the video.

I’ve seen some people say that they think Clive saying “f*ck” during these battles sounds cheesy and forced trying to be edgy, but honestly if I’m in a life of death battle against a godlike magic dragon I too would be saying “f*ck!”
game of the year 100%, i get zelda is awsome but its locked to 60 fps and its 30 fps half the time, also its not nearly as big as ff16
While I do think XVI is the better game, it also suffers from an atrocious amount of framerate drops. The game can't ever get close to 60 outside of combat (sometimes it's barely above 30 in performance mode). This game needed more time in the cooker, either that or CBU3 should have committed to a day 1 patch sooner. They made a slew of bad decisions pertaining to its optimization towards the end of development. Still, it's an amazing game regardless. Hoping they roll out the performance fixes soon.

Not to take anything away from Jill but I doubt she'd be any help and probably only be a distraction for Bahamut and Clive/Joshua. It's made painfully clear all Eikons aren't made equal. Something akin to Naruto (forgive me for my weebness lol) each Eikon is like a tailed beast some are just stronger than others. Odin being the Ninetails as the strongest with all of his broken abilities (most only used in cutscenes) and Ifrit is like the Ten tails husk absorbing the others. Would Garuda vs Bahamut be an even fight, Titan vs Odin,

Having a bunch of potions was out there for new game plus on final fantasy difficulty. You will need them too. First play thru was a cake walk.
