Autism and Sensory Sensitivities...what are they for me?

  • It's been really helpful to learn about what exactly are hypersensitivities and what are hyposensitivities with regards to autism, and just what that means for me. I knew I was more sensitive to certain things but it's only recently that I'm realising that my strong reactions to smells, heat, and sound is part of a bigger picture. I feel like understanding these are helping me to understand myself better. And that I'm not wrong because I have these, it is just part of who I am. I know that part will take longer to get my head round, but understanding my sensory sensitivities is really helpful.
Thank you for watching my videos, I hope these are helping you.

Thank you so much for talking about yourself! This helps me and many other high masking autistics and we are building community. Keep sharing your thoughts and experiences!

Late diagnosed middle aged AuDHD here, I can relate. The analysis and discussion process in itself can be overwhelming, but thanks for noting your response to heat, as I do that too (I suspect it's a proactive/pre-emptive survival reflex to protect oneself from injury i.e. seeing a heat source in itself isn't enough to assess the risk of injury.) It takes several seasons to re-evaluate one's life experiences in the context of autism, take it one day at a time. 😊

I took all the televisions out of my house. id rather smell a dog than a person. i can smell people when they walk by. the extreme heat is giving your brain a dopamine hit. we seek the good and recoil ftom the bad.

This is just my thoughts but I am starting to wonder if we should add amygdalas to the sensory impacts. I am extremely sensitive and extremely anxious ( fight or flight). Could one describe this as just another over sensitive "receptor" and attach a sense (or senses) to the amygdala. It might be core of all senses or where all senses converge. Playing devils advocate not stating this as fact.

This is fascinating, I think I'd need to learn more about the amygdala to comment properly on this, but I understand that we are learning more all the time about how our brain interprets information like sensory impacts so I think its a good question to ask.
