    163 bhp euro 3 no dpf is most trouble free an reliable one. 185bhp (silver cover) with dpf got some engine improvements(higher fuel pressure,vnt turbo) but those driven poorly and in town tend to clog dpfs and wack turbo seals eventually. also 185bhp gen2 d5 have swirl flaps but as far as i know they dont tend to brake like bwms but heard about them clogged with soot and immobile. yours is gen3 on twin turbo 215bhp. not mentioning de-tuned d5s at 124bhp or so.Not many of them around and not worth buying having 163/185 bhp available. before buying gen2 185 with dpf i suggest checking on obd for overboost fault. thats one of easy ways to determine (after giving it some proper boost on test drive) signs of clogging dpf or plug it in and check dpf pressure through scan tool and look for 5kPa value or so,also pcv will seem blowing by from dipstick and oil cap(opened). regen turbo around 260GBP + fitting not easiest but not the worst scenario either. best way is obviously gutting it all out - then you have proper d5 that will last long. also s60s and v50s - rear calipers tend to seize ,possible shock mounts fails - rear, on v50s with gen 2 dpf. + many more but mentioned few. Thanks.

      The early Twin turbo D5's were 205HP Still a great engine, very pleased with mine. Bendy headlamps though a very sharp cut off, are fantastic on high beam and around corners.

    The original D5 was 2.4 litres rather than 2.0. The earliest euro 3 design was arguably the least trouble free without all the DPF gubbins. On the later cars (2010 on) the Bosch CP4 fuel pump is a weak point, if the car runs out of fuel the pump will eat itself sending swarf and metal fragments through the injectors, pumps and fuel rail = expensive.

    On top of what you mentioned, I can add two more things. Sometimes the injectors can fail, which is normal due to age and some countries using poor quality fuel. And cracked heads. I have seen a few D5s over the years crack heads and people are having tough time locating used one. Other that that, great engine if it was taken care of.

    The D5 is 2.4 not 2.0 litre! It is based on the 2.4 petrol block, Euro 3 163 bhp's are the best of the bunch IMO and i own one, Really torquey, Economical (Mines a 2003 V70 and i get 54 mpg on a long run, 44 mpg around town and it's got 242K miles on it!) • @granttaylor8179
      @granttaylor8179 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Volvo D5 are not related to the VAG 5 Cylinder engines.
      Volvo used the 2.5 TDi 5 Cylinder VAG engine until the D5 was Released.
      The 2.4D models used a detuned version of the D5.
      My parents have a late 2002 Xc70 D5 with around 200,000 miles on the clock.
      It is a lovely car with that lovely 5 Cylinder sound when accelerating hard.
      Volvo Penta also used the D5 for marine use.
      The D5 was rated at 163BHP but may have been more like 175BHP.
      The latter single turbo D5 were 175BHP to 190BHP and the latter twin turbo versions were rated al 235BHP.
      235BHP was not bad for the time when you think BMW were getting 282BHP from their 3.0 Litre twin turbo diesel engine at the time.

      Andon .. you are aware of the other positions than idle and "put the pedal to the metal"???
      I'm driving a 2014 XC90 D5 AWD Executive (D5244T18 200 BHP engine) and the way, we use it, it's more like 2,5 metric tons on the road than Volvo's 2.280 T but still doing 8 - 9 L/100 km in town and on long haul 5 to just up under 6 L/100 km on the straight country road .. yes in the mountains, I turn off the milage measure (14 .. 16 .. 18L/100 km) but I'm also keeping the same speed there as on the straight .. actually some times just keep the cruise control on in the 4 or 6 lane mountain road and stay in the outer lane. But the +700 km to the capitol from here (our house) I can easily do on one filling with a loaded car and drive around in town for days .. filling at my favorite gas station on the way home (they have some very!! good, homemade ice cream .. 150 ml in any flavour make you feel like heaven) Mrs Schmidt can even get under 8L/100 km in town.

I know my old 2.0d could do 250k easily but ULEZ and general anti diesel policy will probably mean she is scrapped despite being only halfway through her service life. Seems wasteful. I'd rather have a 10+ year old Volvo than a brand new city box.
