Quite interesting (and often forgotten) is that Fiat also made a 5-cylinder diesel that featured in a number of Alfa Romeos from the mid-2000s. In my opinion, nothing beats a five pot diesel, and I love mine in my D3 C30.

We have a 2011 XC90 D5 with the 200 bhp version of the engine. Coming up on 180,000 miles and we still tow 1.5 tonnes with it several times a month. Doesn’t use oil or coolant, and the torque is brilliant. MOT smoke emissions below measurable levels for the past 2 tests. And very easy and logical to work on. Proper bit of engineering!

Here is 2010 XC60 2.4 D5 205hp biturbo with Aisin transmission and Haldex Gen4. Engine is so good, with a lot of power and torque and a lot of tuning potential but Aisin transmission limited torque on 450Nm. That's enough but that engine is real monster. Mine doesn't have swirl flaps, but manifold gasket is weak point, I already changed one. Change original A5B5 oil every 10-12k km, clean EGR and MAF/MAP sensors and very important thing is to clean area between AC and coolant radiators... The dust between them can cause a serious problems to engine because a plenty P3 models doesn't have preinstalled coolant temperature indicator...

Audi were the pioneer's of this engine the volvo 850 adopted the 5 cylinder tdi engine from the tdi 140 audi a6 it was identical other than in the transverse configuration. And volvo just ran and ran with this engine and later versions of it. Great engine if looked after. Nowhere near as economical as the early 850 models but still not bad. In my old 850 me and a friend set the cruise control to around 60ish from cornwall to Bristol and we pulled 68mpg on a run.

Make sure cambelt has been done or budget an extra £500 to have it done. Check for oil in the coolant which could suggest the head gasket has gone. When the car is running open the oil cap, if smoke comes out that's a sign the PCV system needs fixing. Not a desperate thing but good for bringing down the price :) also check the shock absorbers! If it has the same rear shock absorbers as mine you could be look at £550 per rear shock. Make sure there is no white or blue smoke and make sure the transmission shifts OK when cold.

  • @cvince2862
    @cvince2862 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

It's not all roses with these!
The drilling for the oil gallery terminates behind the flywheel, on early engines this is sealed with a rubber, yes rubber coated steel plug, in time oil rots the rubber, the plug is pushed out along with all the engine oil!
Volvo now supply an upgrade, the same plug but without any rubber coating.
Ignore the serpentine belt at your peril, should an old one snap, there is a very good chance it will be drawn into the cam belt, with the usual disastrous consequences!
Apart from these inherent manufacturing faults, I would agree with you, why else would Ford have bought Volvo, stealing this engine design, then selling Volvo onto the Chinese?
Other common (on early) V70 faults:
Rubbish ignition switch, the diecast aluminium breaks, jamming the switch
Rear handbrake shoes that de-laminate, lock the wheel up and breaking the aluminium hub carrier£££'s
Intercoolers that blow out the bottom 2 or 3 rows of airways
Drivers instrument modules, a chip becomes dry jointed

The D5 engine came from a time JUST before Ford purchase them. Volvo take their 5 cylinder petrol engine and convert it to a diesel engine using good quality components and SIMPLE design. You look at original Euro 3 D5 engine bay... there is no swirl flaps, there is no throttle valve, there is no DPF.
You get 163 BHP and an engine with strong in-gear performance and a good noise... Normally diesel engine sound like shit.

Volvo did use a VW/Audi 2.5 5 cylinder diesel but that was in the 90s. The D5 is Volvos own design, but I would be surprised if they copied some stuff from the VW unit. Are all the automatics unreliable? There afew different gearboxes they come with, I know the ford powershift gearbox was crap but not many of them have that. No the D5 is all in house Volvo and they made them for a long time.
The 6 Speed Automatics are pretty solid BUT the 5 Speed boxes are pretty weak. The transmission manufacturer (Aisin Warner) discontinued the 5 speed in favor their new much improved 6 speed design.
I think that transmission is still made today to a degree and its called the AWTF-80 SC.

"now for those of you who know nothing about Volvo at all, you will be very familiar with the D5 engine". Sorry, could you run that past me again?

no its not, Piston failures head failures, most vea engines use 1-1.5 L of oil between services i think we have changed pistons on like 10-15 cars this year using vea engines

@@CatManHDGaming yeah you should buy a late 2017 or 2018 model. They have better piston rings

Fiat's 2.4 JTDM is also 5 cylinder and honestly sounds better.

My only issue with getting a D5, it's so silly but the 2.4i s40 almost outperforms it, if you don't get the best version of the D5..
I could be wrong but won't you need the 185bhp to compete with the 2.4i 170bhp?
If I have a turbo, I want to feel it, I don't want an N/A cousin to be able to keep up 😂
