Just bought a 1ST Gen 2.9 S80. Best car I have ever driven. No turbo fun but what a fantastic engine and nice drive. Going to use time and money to restore it to 100%.
Nice. Love my 03 2.9 p2 s80. Unfortunately I have a coolant leak that just started but it’s almost at 200,000 miles so I’m not surprised. Slowly getting him back to pristine condition since November. Yes the seats are comfiest, I love daily driving it ✨
that P2 is beautiful - that era was the last gasp for automotive design imo. cars have steadily gotten uglier with the advent of CFD and the need to hit lower drag coefficient targets, going from the 0.4-0.5 range (90s-00s) to the 0.3 range for efficiency and performance. it's nice to have a slippery car, but god they're ugly. at a certain point the designer's hand starts to fade away more and more - when you're trying to hit 0.3, every body design starts to converge towards being a "type of Prius". and the P3 volvo isn't all the way there yet, but you can feel how much less attitude and style it has than the boxier, less rounded P2 model.
It was my first car. Black just like the one in this video and an '01 except it wasn't a T6, but a 2.9. I miss it dearly despite all the problems it gave me.
Hey man, that was a nice review! I just bought my first volvo s80 P2 2003, mine is the 2.4 D5 diesel though. Came from a honda civic and oh boy do i feel like royalty, indeed these seats are the most confortable that i've ever sat on any vehicle. Mine has the phone thing which is kinda cool to show friends. Got it for 2500€ from my uncle who was getting rid of it for a XC90. Best deal ever!
Technically you could fit the 3.0-litre T6 or 4.4-litre V8 into the original S80 because Volvo offered them in the XC90, which has the same chassis as the S80. It's been done before.. There is a P2 V70 floating around with the 4.4 litre V8 installed.
I'm driving S80 model year Early 2016. Inside and outside tweaked, only downside is it only as 4 cylinder 2.0 liter engines - I have a diesel... and I am really big fan of it... The interior is bit more sophisticated compared to 2009 model
I have a 2004 S80 T6 in great shape, low-ish miles. It's actually my daily driver! There's something about it I absolutely love! It has the phone on the center console with the number pad on the dash 😂
I'm interested in the newer S80. It looks very understated, elegant and sensible. I just wonder how they are in terms of reliability and cost to own in terms of potential repairs.
Volvo S60 P2 is sedan version of V70 P2 so this one is predecessor to S80 P3. Volvo changed little bit markings with P3. First S80 is a another model even though it being in P2 platform also.
i have one from 2005 with 210 hp and I love that car. My dream is to buy a Porsche when I have more money, but then I know I will miss the comfort of the driver seat. Your review is quite on point, but I have actually never used the crotch pocket. Mostly because my phone can't be charged there and Im driving alone anyway.
I have a P2 2004 S80 2.4 5-cil 170hp non turbo. Almost two years now, it's so comfortable to drive ❤ Planning to keep it for long. (I have a yt shorth with the acceleration) Edit: thnx for the good and funny video.
It might be rough shape and look like poop but ill let you know that this engine and those seats will serve you if you drive to the moon and back, strong non turbo engines and most comfy seats ever... i have same seats on my 2002 S60 and 2.4i , it has 300k km goes like new. More comfy than my 2015 Polestar V60
Interesting comparison and you actually gave better insight the most of the automotive media. The core of the problem was not random Ford parts that people want to make a mountain out of a mole hill out of (Volvo was permitted to maintain separate engine lines, were given superior transmissions than what they had during their own management that Ford was willing to pay a premium from third party vendors to get instead of using their own in house designs, most of the interior is unique to the model, and remember that Volvo used joint venture designs in the past like the PRV engine and the DeLorean used interior parts from them so it's not like every Volvo was 100% unique to Volvo alone). It wasn't Ford cheapening it (Ford improved that part). And I don't think it was the styling or the platform as I think this was still based off of a Volvo platform just Ford shared it. It was they transitioned from LUXURY to luxury SPORT. This and the price increase that would go with it more than anything else would alienate customers. When you need a vehicle that is about comfort more than anything else you understand this principle. You don't care about a lot of these other things as long as it gets you from point A to point B in comfort.
I have a 2003 P2 S80 2.5T with manual tranny. Would go for the T6, but they made only automatic ones. Great DD and sort of a sleeper too - no one expects a grey old clumsy Volvo to take off like that.
@@muckle8 yeah on the electrical parts it would be a very Complicated process, and most very likely it would need a Volvo Technician/Tuner that knows how to work on Aisin Auto Gearboxes. Although, You most definitely would need a wiring harness, Transmission control module with Code that fits the Gearbox itself, and a Proper not very high mileage but mid or low mileage Aisin Tf80sc Gearbox. Note: you would also need to Rewire a couple of things, as for the Ecu from a P3 Doner car, i think you wouldn't need it, since i do not think P3s have a separated Unit managers like the P2 cars.
They both look pretty nice. But always heard the 2001s were very unreliable and often broke down. Maybe it’s the twin turbo version particularly. That’s why the 01 can be had for a song. These problems were ironed out in the P3s, so the story goes. For value I think the P3 wins hands down.
@@TopherParkerCars With about 10 years of experience with Volvos, P2 is higher quality than P3 but not much. @@calamityyy I’m LOVING the S80. All options without the trouble of the V8. I’m good. The R is annoying to drive sometimes because it’s so small but it’s a sports car so I expect that.

Not too bad as a description of the characteristics. The P2 S80 will become a classic.
FINALLY SOMEONE MADE A VIDEO LIKE THIS. FIRST COMPARISON VIDEO OF THE 1ST GENERATION AND 2ND GENERATION S80 VIDEO, THANK YOU

So did I! And same. Reminds me of the Saab 9000s that my parents had when I was a kid. Love my p2 S80
👌💪🏿
Great motor the 2.9
nice review, I have S80 2.3 T 2005 and S60 2.3 T 2003 also Xc90 2.9 T6 2004, All Volvo is confort and classic car :), I love volvo :)

Had a 02 and ever so often my coolant would just disappear.
Got a 02 2.9 also here in the Uk - great old cars.
Have a 2010 S80 with nearly 142,000 miles. Still drives like the day i bought it new!
First generation Volvo looks better than second gen in my opinion

The P2 6 cyl gearbox was made by GM. I worked at the engine center assembly line back in 2003-2006
Iirc it was meant for cadillac, shame it ruined the 1st gen s80s
There was nothing wrong with the transmission itself. It just wasn't rated for the torque of the engine volvo was matting it to
170k miles on mine , gearbox still smooth
I'm interested in the newer S80. It looks very understated, elegant and sensible. I just wonder how they are in terms of reliability and cost to own in terms of potential repairs.
They arnt too bad provided you get one that's been cared for. I'd avoid the 4 cylinder models but the 5 and 6 cylinders in the P3 are pretty solid.

I will always love the first generation Volvo S80 I have a the first generation executive t6 premier very nice and beautiful and very high quality car
P3 was compromised by sharing a Ford platform. It did not have Volvo proportions. The front overhang particularly.

Be nice to have the p3 t6 engine/ transmission in the p2 body
If you have the transmission/Gearbox mount from an S60 p2, you can definitely have the Six Speed Automatic fit into a p2 s80.
