  • Four years after Sticker Star heralded in dark times for the Paper Mario series, Nintendo released a sequel that basically no one wanted. But is that ire deserved, is it just an HD remake of Sticker Star, or is there more to it?

    40:30 - Weeeeell, it kinds _does_ end up being a bit pointless, unfortunately.
    See, if you get all of the the in-game "achievements" (which includes filling in all the colorless spots),
    you get a short after-credits scene that shows Huey falling back down to the island and bouncing into the Prism Fountain.
    Which certainly suggests he survived that whole thing, kinda taking the 'sting' outta the whole 'sacrifice' thing.... again.

    To think that this games' development not only started immediately after Sticker Star, but its inspiration literally came from one of the devs kids getting into art.

      That’s impossible. I saw someone comment on Reddit “Am I the only one who don’t like the paper Mario games after 1000 years door”. I assumed he was the MC in life who has original thoughts and ideas who deserves to be followed because he’s not like a NPC like me, you and the uploader.

    Edit: alright besides the battle system he said mostly good things so yay, plus I agree the battle system is boring.

    I personally really love Color Splash. It is my personal favorite Paper Mario game for many reasons. I grew up in the modern era of Paper Mario. Sticker Star being the first Paper Mario game I played. I liked that game. When Color Splash came out I was excited for it, and really looked forward to playing it. When I did play it, I LOVED IT! The music, the visuals, the dialogue, everything! It was amazing! I do admit that there are somethings that aren’t the greatest about the game, but the positives outweigh the negatives for me. I have a ton of fond memories with this game which is why I love it so much.

    Nintendo had some braindead responses to third party developers during this time. Some developers pointed at the extremely underpowered CPU of the Wii U (the GPU was decent), basically saying there were a lot of genres it just couldn't do. Their response was "the other consoles are HD, we're HD now too so there's no issue".

    Hard disagree on the music. I think identity is even more important than quality when it comes to a series like paper mario. If you put those tracks up along with mario kart 8 tracks and asked people to choose between them, I doubt they could. Not every game with Mario needs the jazz band music, it's feeling overused at this point

    23:15 Lucky for you, as I've NEVER, not ONCE, have had a good time with the bloody Wii remote; it's trash garbage, and I abhor how Nintendo (and, as a result, third-parties) shafted the Wii Classic Controller.
    I've always considered the Wii U a return to form, a massive upgrade and righting of the ship, after the utter *turd* that was the Wii. The GamePad is a massive improvement over the Wiimote.

    • @Mike14264
      @Mike14264 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Damn, really? You had that many issues with the pointer?

    • @PokeMaster22222
      @PokeMaster22222 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Mike14264 Yes, I have. I've got a bunch of Wiimotes, both basic and MotionPlus, and not _one_ of them were anywhere near close to accurate.
      The cursor kept blinking in and out, or kept tilting to one side, or zooming across the screen - which made it incredibly frustrating trying to do *anything* with it. Skyward Sword's Goddess Harp? Almost impossible to properly use. The Beetle? Kept leaning to one side, and trying to fly straight was straight-up a no-go.
      I can't even imagine trying to play Pikmin or Pikmin 2 with this shit; they're better off on GameCube (or now, Switch). Twilight Princess Wii at least allows you to turn the stupid pointer *off* and just use analog controls for the Bow and Slingshot (and analog's far more accurate too, in my experience).
      As I've never *once* had a good time with the Wiimote gimmick, and Nintendo completely shafted the Classic Controller, that means I've only had a good time with the Wii as a console when I was playing GameCube or Virtual Console games, or TP Wii or Super Smash Bros. Brawl (which doesn't use motion at all). Otherwise, it's a shit console, and the Wii U was a massive improvement by being a return to form.

    • @Mike14264
      @Mike14264 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@PokeMaster22222 damn. I never had any issues with any of the games I had. Both Mario Galaxys, Epic Mickey, Wii Sports and Resort... almost no issues at all, really!
      Plus, while I didn't play them, I hear many people say that the Wiimote control is their preferred way of playing Pikmin 1 and 2, being able to control with precision where they're aiming.
      Maybe the problem is with the sensor you put on top of the TV instead of the wiimotes themselves?
      On the other hand, the Wii U might as well have been called the Neck Snap. The most common complaint I hear about the games that used that piece a plastic tablet is that the gameplay is too much "stop and go". I don't think I've ever heard anyone say "the Wii U's tablet was a great way to implement this idea to its fullest".

    • @PokeMaster22222
      @PokeMaster22222 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Mike14264 About the Wii's sensor bar - I also experimented with putting it above the TV and below it, and with moving myself closer to or further away from the TV. Nothing worked; the pointer still kept glitching out.
      As for the Wii U GamePad, I never really had "neck snap" issues. I first played Deus Ex: Human Revolution on the Wii U, and that used the GamePad for hacking sequences and inventory management, not to mention a map; never got a sore neck, from what I recall. Same with Twilight Princess HD and The Wind Waker HD.
      If it did cause people neck pain, then most games also supported the Wii U Pro Controller; heck, because I didn't need constant inventory management or map access for TP HD, I actually preferred playing that game with the Pro Controller. TWW HD, on the other hand, was much better with constant map access, considering you're sailing everywhere, and the treasure maps you find.
      I dunno, I just had way more frustration and anger and discomfort using the Wii, rather than the Wii U. I can only speak of my experiences, at the end of the day.

    • @Mike14264
      @Mike14264 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@PokeMaster22222 I assume the sensor bar itself was what was broken, for the pointers to glitch out that badly.
      Also, yeah, for most folks, the controller for the Wii U was probably a saving grace. The main gripe I see with the Wii U is that the tablet... feels useless. It's very situational in the things it does, and what it does feels too segregated from the game most of the time. At least the controller kept the whole thing on a single screen... though sometimes to a detriment anyways, like with Pikmin 3's Koppai Pad thingy, where you either had to look at the Wii U for little reason, or stare into a reduced screen within the TV screen.
      But yeah, at the end of the day, it's all down to personal experiences. Same thing with some folks' grievances with the Switch's Joy-Cons.

    Am i really the only one who thinks color splash is way worse than sticker star? I'm not saying sticker star is a good game, but that color splash felt like the same game only with way worse battle mechanics and physics. All the color mechanics were effectively useless to absoutely annoying. Everything feels slow and the mega attacks are even more of a pain.

    Look Eventho fans don't like sticker Star it sell better thin the others so denpening on which way You look at it paper Mario sticker Star could be the worst Game is of all time or the Best 3ds Game ever so Eventho color splash does improve on sticker Star a little bit it still has it's flaws like sticker Star altho most the toads looked the same some of them have outfits so You can tell them apart so i don't see why people don't mention in there reviews? It's not like You cant see it so what's up with that

    • @Mike14264
      @Mike14264 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Well, let's see... Super Paper Mario was the best selling game in the whole series, followed by The Origami King and Sticker Star. I think Sticker Star sold better than Color Splash because of the initial expectations the fans had. It was a beloved series that was coming back, and in a more typical form, an RPG. Folks adored Super Paper Mario and its excellent story, so a follow up that returned to its RPG roots seemed like a great sell!
      ...but only after everyone bought it, did they actually realize what they signed up for. Ever since then, people have been extremely cautious of Paper Mario releases, cus they knew these design choices weren't it.
      And when they saw Color Splash kept much of what was wrong with Sticker Star, as well as the inclusion of other typical grievances with the Mario series in general, like the inclusion of the Koopalings as the bosses... well, of course folks weren't gonna sign up for that. Hence Color Splash being the worst selling game in the series.
      The Origami King, while it still has a weird and divisive battle system... it has a cool story and adventure, as well as actual characters that aren't Toads. It's a very divisive game that, on one hand, made some folks appreciate what the game was for what it was - if this was what Paper Mario was gonna be, it's probably the best this format had to offer, with different characters, partners of sorts, a battle system that wasn't a complete bore, and an actually deep plot with multiple arcs and stakes; but on the other hand, the puritan fans of Paper Mario absolutely loathed that this seemed to be the culmination of the series' style and gameplay, and the meta story within the game only seemed to fuel their anger regarding their criticism - Nintendo was hearing them, but it felt like they weren't allowing anything to be done about it. Still, it did fix many of the things wrong with Color Splash, and the majority of folks liked it, including many of the older Paper Mario fans, the Color Splash fans, and whatever two or three people that like Sticker Star, so it sold much better.

    • @Mike14264
      @Mike14264 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Also, the Toads with different outfits, you mean Color Splash, right? I mean, there were the Rescue Squads, the Roshambo Toad guy, the fancy Toads from the mansion (do the ghosts also count?), the uh, the train conductor I think, and the Toads with accessories, like hats, scarfs and glasses. Ah, and those that looked like keys.
      ...and yeah, that's pretty much it. Still no actual names tho.
