- Just like the Wii U, it’s no secret that Paper Mario Color Splash was a massive disappointment. Its announcement during a 2016 Nintendo Direct was confirmation that the formula established with the N64 original and The Thousand Year Door was truly dead. Paper Mario Sticker Star wasn’t just some one-off experiment like we had hoped, it was the new direction for the series. But, is this truly just Sticker Star 2? Or is Color Splash a step in the right direction for this new style of Paper Mario?

Remove the turn based combat and actually keep the partner system who each have their own unique overworld abilities to solve puzzles and this genuinely could have been an AMAZING game. Yeah, not the RPG fans were hoping for, but if they wanted to make it a puzzle adventure game akin to an old LucasArts style game, they could have nailed it with a few tweaks.

I never played this game when I bought it for cheap 3 years ago but you’ve convinced me to give it a genuine shot 👏

The main criticism with Sticker Star was the battle system, they did want to fix it but it was too far in development to change.
Its design was also bad and its lack of story
Its not even Intelligence Systems fault but a certain individual didn't like what an old partner did with the Mario IP.
Now they can only use well established Mario characters in the series
Origami king is definitely better than this, even if it does have its own issues, and still not to the level of the previous games like the first three, but definitely better than the other two of the modern series

so many new characters and they kill them off almost IMMEDIATELY after, some in more bullshit ways than others, and not only straight up copies the damn super paper mario ending -- in the WORST WAY POSSIBLE, but also does the same "character sacrifice" cliche AGAIN. God, it's like the game hates me lmao.

If they don't want Paper Mario to an RPG, why does it still have turn-based gameplay!?
For the recent games they have said they stick with a system until they master it then they move on
I honestly liked Color Splash now I’m not fond with many paper Mario games the only ones I’ve played were PM64,CS,and TOK and for all of those I’ve played I’ve enjoyed all three of them I never finished CS due to losing it but for as much Ives played I enjoyed it now of course there’s a lot I would like the game to nit have such as how you lose a card if you mess up using cut out and running away isn’t based on skill but I still liked the small charm of the game and it’s design over all plus the card battle system isn’t hard to me or difficult I was able to have the exact amount of cards I needed for a specific battle now will I say TOK is better? 100% I enjoyed way more but I still liked CS for what it was now no this isn’t me saying PM64 is worst than both of them or PM64 is better than them I just enjoyed the 3 neutrally

Haven't played PM O.K. BUT color splash and sticter star . . . I might be the minority but they got me into paper mario thus making me go back to previous games to see whats new about them and what not.
I hardly ever hear people complaining about how the concept art characters look so much better than the actual game. That would've made for some good material when begging for more REAL Paper Mario games all those years ago.
The plot is bad because Miyamoto wanted Paper Mario to have NO STORY
When Sticker Star released he said that Paper Mario doesn't need a story
He pulled a bit back probably after its bad reception but still wanted a simple story

I guess miyamoto is kind of like a true gamer in regards. Just a shame that he inheritantly hates stories in his games. Now, it wasn't too hard to just have gameplay in the beginning, but these days you have to progress.

I always feel like did the wrong Color Splash when I hear people talk about how funny it was and the "characters" "personalities" I didn't find it very funny at all and I always forget about the jokey Toads until I watch a video like this
I agree honestly. Color Splash focuses WAY too much on humor and cranks the obnoxious fourth wall breaking meta humor from TTYD and Super (yes I hate the fourth wall breaking meta humor from those two games sue me) to eleven and it’s so annoying to me.

I have a video idea, compare the Mario and Luigi series to Paper Mario, and explain the issues that slowed both of them down and how they can be improved.

10:27 Sadly, the CRAZINESS of the GameCube and early Wii era... was probably a bit too much. I mean.. Peach is shown taking a shower in TTYD, Mario playing basketball with Rick Mahorn, Waluigi doing the Crotch Chop, Daisy in Mario Strikers Charged does the HOT STUFF pose and... xD Nintendo is like "NO. We are ending this nonsense NOW!!"
And... there ya go. Outside parties aren't allowed to go as wild as things once were. But now the OPPOSITE problem is happening with _Paper_ Mario.

2:18 I personally believe 2018 was the biggest nothing year for Nintendo. It was hell being a Nintendo fan in 2018 and that sucks because the Switch was so new. Really gave the console a bad first impression.

i agree with you on that as i still don’t consider those games that came out before mario kart and zelda to be true switch games i forget what they were called to add insult to injury even tho wii u had at least a first party game aka new super mario bros u when it released so i agree with you on that before breath of the wild and kart 8 deluxe the switch didn’t have anything to get people interested in it

I don’t think making Bowser is an ALLY instead of a villain is an automatic POSITIVE. I think what they should do is give us unique and original MAIN villains for later entries but keep Bowser in a villainous role but make him more of a minor secondary villain to the new main villain. I just prefer Bowser MUCH more when he’s a villain than when he’s an ally/anti-hero as I believe being a villain suits him better.

You make a great point. Color Splash has SOME good qualities. One of the all time great soundtracks, decent art style, some very fun puzzles throughout… so WHY is it turn based? Why have they insisted on that foundation for 3 games in a row? These games would ALL work much better (except mayyybe Origami King) if they were platformer-based like Super, rather than RPG-based (because they are, let’s be honest).

Best game just saying if you don’t agree that’s fine and you have your opinion but I really love the music the battle I don’t hate the battle style and u really love the writing and the world and level being very creative and interesting,in the game. There’s probably going be a ttyd fan telling me wrong 😞

Some of these issues resonate with my experience playing Origami King. As someone who skipped the last two, I still notice a lot of what’s missing.
The pointlessness of battle still rings true, for me anyway. The puzzle circles are just s o _t e d i o u s_ . Regular fights merely serve to halt your progress. However, I will say that the system shines when it comes to bosses. Now, *those* were actually pretty fun.
Other than that, witty writing and beautiful set pieces were certainly pluses.
The generals, while literally designed as “moving office supplies” were surprisingly entertaining in the moment.
The villain, while being original, is pretty shallow when you learn his motivation, though.
Miyamoto killed the Paper Mario series
Actually your worng in the earlier dev of sticker star before the change he just only said to change uo the story to make it feels less like ttyd but never said change gameplay and everything no he just said change uo the story to not be like ttyd and that's it
I would say it was more like a double crime. Miyamoto gave terrible advise the team felt forced to follow, Tanabe insists it was a good idea because he thinks Miyamoto cannot fail.
Miyamoto gave a suggestion not an order he Said why not do no story since no one likes super paper Marios story besides, with his suggestion of no story for sticker star, and just using Mario world characters, they took it in the worst way possible instead of just not listening, they used only toads
A lot of people who like CS say the writing and story is still pretty good
The personalities in CS isn’t that good. Many characters are forgettable one-liner jokesters, whereas the first three games had actually characters that had different dialogue as the game progressed! They don’t even have names!
Underwhelming remakes my ass TPHD was my first Zelda game and it was awesome
