This is awesome. Since I effed up my lower back somedays I have trouble doing heavy squats and end up feeling it in my lower back the rest of the week. Not optimal especially when I'm trying to build legs like Steve's and do legs twice a week.
Thank you for the vid Steve. I whould love some tips on how to train quads when you have patella pain. My knees hurt like hell when I try to do squats atm, or really any exercise that requires me to bend my knees more then 90 degrees. Have you ever had this problem yourself and what did you do to fix it?
I have been following you for years and Im pleased to see your progress. From where you have been to what you have become.. Really and inspiration. I liked this video because I have an artificial hip. My legs are my weak point and squats are a no-go for me - these exercises have opened new doors for me to build legs. Thank you.
This is incredibly helpful. I was just told yesterday by my doc, "You're a 40 year old man with a bad back." For someone who has been very active/worked out for 20+ years, this was incredibly hard to hear. I need something to shake up my workout now that I can't Crossfit any longer and I appreciate you posting this.
Steve I love being subscribed to your channel! These workouts are so helpful and motivating! Straight fire! I am so humbled by pistol squats but I know I have to do them.
Love it, functional training is SO beneficial in everyday life and I love that you're incorporating it into your channel, I know you believe in it and you're an athlete for sure! :)
I don't know if it would be appropriate for a "no squat" day, but back when I was coming back from sciatica I would two two different types of squats. Normal goblet squats are good and all, but one kettle bell on my side in a squat was perfect. I would have the kettlebell up resting on my arm, which was in a triangle position so it would rest between that and my shoulder, and you'd only need a moderate amount of weight to get any benefit. The balance work was amazing. Also, I would use an attachment on a cable for a variation of front squats or front sumo squats. I felt like those helped so much in recovery and returning to my old shape without rushing into dangerous lifts.
I know all about the L4/5 injuries... 2.5 years ago I could not even go close to standing up straight, and couldn't even stay on my feet for more than maybe 1-2 minutes at a time... ended up going under the knife for a discectomy and laminectomy. Fast forward about 12 months from that, getting way too fat, decided to start swimming at the local gym to lose some weight, didn't last long before I tried out the weights room... about 6 months of only training upper body, no loading my spine, etc, and then I started legs training about a year ago after watching some of your video's, Steve... nek minnit I'm not repping 405. Certainly not without discomfort and needing to know when to back off the weight and/or intensity as I still have more issues with my back, but if you train smart and listen to your body (and most importantly leave your ego at the door) it's crazy what your body will do. Still have a lot of muscular issues in my lower back and hips, not to mention a stuffed disc at L3/4 and not a perfect one at L5/S1. 300lb guy struggling to squat a single at 135lb just over 12 months ago... now sitting around 250, just slowly chipping away... goal is 225 repping 495 by my 33rd birthday in February. Consistency is key. Keen to try out some of the exercises you list in this video as accessories... I cringe at pistol squats though, lol, that shit is proper hard!!
Good content as always, im so sad you didnt make your gym in Scottsdale. Keep this good shit coming though. Steve Cook, hands down favorite fitness channel.
I would just like to commend Cal of his excellent work of keeping the pretty girl in the background in the shot as long as possible as often as possible.
I haven't been able to put a bar on my back and squat for like 4 months now due to injury sooooo this is gonna be useful for me🙌🏽 can't wait to try it tomorrow! Thx Steve😎....p.s... when you gonna put a ring on Courtney🤷🏻♀️🙏🏽
Hi Steve....my husband injured his knee and his lower back...he wants to know if you have a complete body workout he can do before rugby season starts....thanx
I like to run about 5 yards one way quickly switch directions go 10 yards back then switch directions again back to the starting point. Or set up things on the floor a few feet apart and do studer steps over them.
Hey Steve I have a suggestion for the single leg hip up. My track coach had me put my stationary leg on a bosu ball and for the leg in the air, have us stay in line with your torso. It makes it really difficult.
My god! I did this leg workout and killed my legs! It probably didn't help that I added heavy squats at the end. I couldn't walk for 3 days. Have you done a video on recovery tips after exercising?
Hey would love to see a video on hip mobility, you guys did the stretching video which was great but still when I squat I feel uneven on the way down and I’m pushing with one leg more than the other. Any tips on how to fix that?
I hurt my back doing squats a week ago.. and had to try this yesterday! But I ate a cheat meal thanks to my friend posting a home-made pizza on Sharood RIGHT AFTER MY workout..
Hey, When did you find out about the herniated disks? I had bad back pain 6 weeks ago, stopped training for 2 weeks, travelled Asia for 2 weeks, now I've been back for a week after carrying a heavy bag and my lower spine hurts! Could it be herniated disks? Maybe caused by the weight of the bag compressing the disks? Is it the end of bodybuilding for you?
Thanks Steve for this my l5 is fractured and slipping forward and I couldn’t really find good leg work outs todo I still did leg day tho just mainly hamstring curls and leg raises
Im only 32 Born the same day as Steve and I have just had a double hernia repair so I haven’t been to the gym today or for the next 6 weeks, i want to go to the gym but not allowed
Hey Steve you know the Wallabies defeated the AB's last night? Well done to them though about time 😂 awesome clip I'm gonna try that next gym session 👍💪
This is why I like Steve, he listens to swoldier nation. We ask how to get thighs, the next day he's uploading how to build legs without squats.
I love how Steve advise about growing muscles not only its size or mass but also its functionality. I really do appreciate that. So informative.
Steve Cook turning in to the best fitness channel on TH-cam. Congrats on the gym and success, you motivate us all brah
This for someone with a lower back injury
I legit do every exercise but no unilateral ones and I’m gonna definitely add some of these to my arsenal now. Cheers!

I liked this video because I have an artificial hip. My legs are my weak point and squats are a no-go for me - these exercises have opened new doors for me to build legs. Thank you.

Titel: how to grow legs without squats.
Thumbnail: pistolSquat...
Came here for this.
Damn i totally miss that
I'm Newage that is funny but most people don't get pain from body weight squats, they get pain from having crap form when squatting with weight
pistol squats don't have any spine loading though.
Should be renamed to “how to grow legs without doing barbell squats”
What about a knee injuries such as runners knee

Thanks Steve for this my l5 is fractured and slipping forward and I couldn’t really find good leg work outs todo I still did leg day tho just mainly hamstring curls and leg raises

I'm confused, what gym is he working out in? I thought he had his gym open when he moved there? Was that a temporary location?
