    I have never heard or read of the Matilda 2 being referred to as Matilda senior.

    Your channel got recommended to me today (the jagdpanther video) and must say that the videos have good quality especially for someone who just started with youtube. Of course there’s always room for improvement but if you keep it like you’re doing it right now I think you’re doing not much wrong.

      It really needed a short-barreled 75mm, like the early Panzer IV.

      As with many other early British tanks there was a CS (close support) version with a 3" howitzer in the turret instead of the 2 pdr. Sadly they only used it for firing smoke !

    Mathilda II didn't influence development of Tiger or Panther ! These programs started in 1938 already. Mathilda together with Char B and Somua S-35 led to the immediate upgrade of Panzer III to the 5cm gun L42 after the French campaign, a program which was supposed to happen before that campaign, but for various reasons didn't.

    • @LearningHistoryTogether
      @LearningHistoryTogether  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well it wasn't really the matilda influencing the Panther/Tiger but it was more Hitler influencing it

      @@LearningHistoryTogether He wasn't wrong ! Both tanks have their good reputation for their armor and guns. However he had not as much influence as you might think. German aquisitioning processes were very clearly outlined.
      One has to get rid of the idea that Hitler was an allout idiot ! Idiots didn't get to the top these days. He was many things, but until 1942 he was relatively clear minded and his few (!) interventions on tank development made perfect sense. He lost it mentally after Stalingrad.
      Check out "The Chieftain" channel here on YT. He gives a really good insight on Tiger development and Hitler's influence on it.

      And they would not have fitted on UK railways so would have never have been developed in pre-war UK

    This tank was bit slow and outclassed.Was used extensively in North Africa.

    • @ottovonbismarck2443
      @ottovonbismarck2443 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was an infantry tank, so speed wasn't a factor in its specifications. Not the tank's fault that it got caught in the racing that North Africa was for many parts. They did sterling service in the Far East until the end of the war. Every tank is outclassed at some point. Panzer III and IV were also outclassed at some point. The question is: do you have something better at hand to replace it ? In Mathilda's case, M3 Grant and Valentine became available.
      The gun was absolute capable of killing any axis tank it met in its time. It lacked HE capability, which is in my opinion the most important thing for an infantry tank.

    Until the Centurion, British tanks were ugly horrendous looking hulks...Guess thats why British cars were so ugly for so long, the overall engineering and design mindset...I do like the driver and machine gunner sort of protected by setting behind the tracks on the Matilda and Churchills.
