  • Americans' interest in owning an electric car has actually been in decline over the past few years now that more of the problems especially to do with charging and range are becoming more obvious according to Cox Automotive. It's getting so bad, that EV inventory on dealer lots has reached an all time high and Americans are saying NO!

Do you like games? Ubisoft says "gamers should get more comfortable not owning their games". You don't even want to hear about the smart cities.

As a Mechanic Michael, I own a 1974 Chevy pickup, a 50 year old truck with the original engine, transmission and stills runs great for it's age and condition, I doubt an EV will last that long, they even say that the battery lasts only 8 years on average. But extra work could raise the final bill by thousands so get an estimate up front; especially if you have a detached garage consider if it would be possible to place the charger elsewhere as trenching to bury the cables can get stupidly expensive.

How will I charge my car if I live in an apartment or a rental house? They wont let you install chargers, and certainly wont fork over the cash to install them. The prices of electric cars are insane, the repair costs are insane, the batteries often cost as much as the whole vehicle is worth, and many of these old electric cars will just end up at the crushers or a landfill. So much for environmentally friendly.

Obvious answer, but I will say it. At some point your apartment house will install chargers. It may be a while because it costs $ to install. So until more EVs are adopted and on the road, this may take a decade or so to happen. A similar thing happened with HDTV adoption.

clearly you should not have an EV if you live in an apartment that has no way to charge. As for your rental house (which I am in too) I charge my used 2018 model 3 with a basic level 1 and do just fine. I get about 50 miles per night and that's plenty to get through the week then catchup on the weekend when I am not driving as much.

Hello Michael: Thank you for this terrific video. This is my 63rd year working on cars & you couldn't pay me to even sit in one. If you look at how these vehicles are built / assembled you would be sick to your stomach. The one thing that really bugs me to no end is that a lot of people refuse to speak about is is the volatility of these batteries. A Lithium fire burns at approx 5,000 degrees. Even after the fire is extinguished it can reignite for no reason. 3 of my customers all had band new EV'S with less than 3,000 miles on the clock & they all went up in flames. One of my customers had to break the windows to get out cause the electric doors & windows refused to work. My doctors neighbor brought home his new EV, pulled it into the garage & plugged it in to charge. 10 minutes later all of his smoke alarms went off. He & his wife were lucky to get out of the house cause it all went up in flames. There were 5 surrounding town fire depts came to assist but because the fire was so hot it turned the water from the firetrucks into steam. Please note that all 5 pumper trucks emptied out their tanks & had to leave for a refill. This family LOST EVERYTHING !!!! The only thing standing was the chimney for the fireplace. Michael these manufacturers rushed to market a flawed design to keep the administration happy & the customer is the guinipig. Love your channel sir, thank you. TMP from N.J.

    that is more energy density.
The specific energy density, even if one takes into account 2,5-3 times higher efficiency of electric compared to ICE, is about 20 times less (gas tank vs. battery, energywise).

So if your EREV with full charge and full tank, you are looking at over thousand miles per charge

I will say the only reason I wouldn't get an electric car is the non existing charging network and the 30 to an hour wait time . I have some electric tools I use for my yard and the only reason I use em is because I have multiple batteries so when one dies I can swap out another and keep it going. We need something like that for cars or they need to reinvent the gas station. I walk into a gas station and it works . I get snacks , use the restroom and grab food and after 10 minutes or 15 I leave . I don't want to spend 30 minutes to an hour at a gas station . Now if it was a dope lounge with drinks , comfortable chairs , ac , pool or some free arcade games I wouldn't mind stopping for that hour .

I sold it because at least for my specific situation, the Tesla is actually cheaper for me personally to run. I live in Glendale, CA (close to Downtown LA, a decent 15-20 min drive to Dodgers Stadium!) I live in an apartment that does not have home charging. I have yet to ask my landlord about home charging, but so far I am assuming it is a no since my neighbor has a Model 3 as well and he does not have a charger. However, in our city alone, we have 2 Tesla Superchargers and then there are 6 along my work route, with a 7th one that is built about a 5 minute walk from where I work, but it is not online yet. There are also some "slower" charger networks near work, like Chargepoint, it takes about 3 hours to charge my car with that one, but it's alright since I walk on my breaks/ lunch and they are close.
So, as you said in the end, as of right now, EV's are highly situational. For my personal situation, I am a car guy, as well as a tech guy, so I honestly wanted a Tesla almost solely because of it. I did so much research before I ultimately pulled the trigger because of course, charging is a problem if you do not have networks near you, and/or no home charging. I personally am loving it, and insurance-wise, it's sadly the same for me, since the Civic Si is a sportier trim for the Honda Civic line, and the area I live in is probably the worst in the country for car insurance.
I bought one because for me it's cheaper. Versus my Civic, it cost me $9.98 to run it last week. Highest I have seen is around $36 a week. Stopping to charge roughly every 2-3 days, depending if I drove more for other errands and whatnot. Also, from what I have seen, Tesla is still the best in terms of range, charging, and support. Other brands, like my coworker's Mercedes EV, he's been complaining about range. Honestly, I don't think he did enough research, and it's not working for him...
Onto regulations from the government, I am totally against it as well. As Americans, we should be able to drive whatever we want. Hell, my plan right now is to keep the Tesla as a daily and get a nice manual transmission fun car again, after selling my Civic Si. If the government wants to push EV's they need to help with building out a network. So far, there is barely anything especially if you do not have a Tesla, and obviously, as we can see like in Chicago, it's not perfect, but they still are the best right now, which says a lot about how behind the technology is if they want mass adoption.
Anyways, I got home from work and just wanted to throw my thoughts down, I am not even sure if you will see this! haha Anyways, if you do and you have questions, I do not mind sharing! Also, I am following everything I am doing with my Tesla, just to see how everything stacks up vs. the Honda Civic Si I sold. So far, it's been great, I am projecting a tire rotation in probably the next 3 weeks. It will be the first bit of "maintenance" for my car :) thanks again, Michael! @MichaelBordenaro !

Wow! One of the few TH-camrs finally saying what I always been saying! EV and homeownership goes hand in hand to make the most sense! Renters with EVs are at the mercy of the area they live in if the landlord don’t have or won’t allow you to install a charger on the property. A relative of mine learn the hard way when she wanted to move and found out that her Tesla was like a rock tied around her feet from making the move because the area didn’t have charging stations or it’s too far.

My friends who own electric cars site the completely different (better) driving experience with EVs. The fact that they don’t have a slow surge of power when you push the gas pedal instead instantly shooting forward) and also that they are bottom heavy due to the fact that their batteries are located under the floor, therefore more stable and less prone to rollovers) makes these vehicles attractive to many people. Not for me for the obvious and well known negatives.

Great vid Mike, my wife n I bought the PHEV Pacifica last year. No range anxiety, can charge with 120V plug (though it takes ~13 hr), and we get 40-65 mpg. It depends on how often we charge, what kind of driving, n whether we have to turn on climate control. On electric it usually gets ~30-37 miles on full electric.
It also qualifies for the tax credit. It’s super comfortable for everyone.
I have tried using public charging stations n they just don’t work on my car. I really glad I can fill the tank n keep going.

Since I retired (FIRE) in 2020 I have been filling my tank once or twice a year, driving around 300 miles a year and changing oil once every three years. I pour in a couple of ounces of fuel stabilizer every year for good measure.
I drive within a nine mile radius now as well.
My only issue EV is the costs involved and the lies about mileage among other things.
With $2.40/gal gas, $900/yr. insurance, and around $30/yr. annual tag/ tax I’m better off where I’m at now with what I have.

I live in California and get our electricity from the big ripoff PG&E who charges us the highest electrical rates in the NATION!!! They recently boasted of 2 billion dollars in profits for last year after just raising our rates with another increase the next few months totalling almost 40%! Our Governor has been pushing electric vehicles here, requiring all vehicles to be zero emissions by 2035. I bought my corolla (1999) right off the showroom floor, it still purrs like a kitten, and I have no intentions of getting rid of it. Some people here are already complaining that it costs more in electricity to charge up their car than it is for regular gas at the pump! If I am still fortunate to be alive in 2035 the Governor can kiss my ass because I will never convert to an electric vehicle.

Mike. I love your videos and watch everything you say about Real Estate, the Market, the Economy etc! But this specific topic I don’t agree. I have owned a Tesla for over 2 years (LA, CA) now and I love it. It’s easy, simple and I charge at home, I get reimbursed for mileage so the payment pays itself with my mileage check and I even have some money left over. The insurance is expensive HOWEVER if you go directly through Tesla it’s dirt cheap (cheaper than on my regular cars) and I don’t know why 🤷‍♂️ . It’s my commuter, I drive the crap out of it and by no means is it a “luxury” vehicle and the ONLY reason I own one is to save money and so far I have 🤷‍♂️. I believe it is a tool and if you use it as such it works pretty damn good.

The plan for the upcoming Agenda 2030/Sustainability goals (which 193 countries have been members of since 2015, including America), is that cars in general are not part of that plan, and that includes both gas and electric. They are pushing the electric now to make people not feel so bad as they move to rid the world of regular gas vehicles. But, once they rid us of gas vehicles, the electric cars will follow suit and be eliminated in most places. The new 15 minute/smart cities' goals are to keep us all imprisoned in one area, with only the use of public transportation. Private ownership of homes, cars and businesses will not exist.
