What you could not understand was the friendship of gregory peck and anthony quinn. The scene shows anthony quinn is injured and obviously he cannot swim far enough & then gregory peck wants to pay good deed back to anthony quinn by saving him as anthony quinn had saved gregory peck earlier on the cliff. Great fun to watch this great movie. Hats off.

Quin was going to kill Peck when the war ends. Hence he thinks Peck will kill him and that's why he's not sure about Pecks motives....
