I’ve seen a few people making “rope” by winding up resin soaked fibreglass to fill in / strengthen gaps like, like your windows , most recently SV Lynx putting a hard edge on foam bulkheads , good progress though 😃🍻

Copper coat is not the product many think it is. It still needs to taken care of, you still need to scrub the bottom(just not as much, and lightly sand when the growth is coming back too fast. I could never understand boats in warm waters with all the growth on the bottom, it's just laziness that it's there.

Take a look at "Sailing Red Seas". They copper-coated their boat Indioka and I am not sure they are happy with it. Maybe their application, but they are beginning to get some growth.

      Maybe two weeks to fair.
      Then that keel...

Seeing Marina the smerf reminded me of when i had to cut out steel plating below the waterline. Had a friend who was a gun welder who did the necessary and my then partner would do the grinding and painting of the welds. I would come home from work and out from under would come an orange overalled blonde haired grinder wielding apparition. Face as black as the ace of spades and crap all through her hair and a grin as wide as could be. She was unbelievable and couldnt understand how much she was contributing to the re-fit. Always talking about not contributing money. What she did far outweighed any monetary input. We split a few years later. Not acrimoniously but not as well as we should have. However i will always remember the work she put in and the hardness of the work she did and the dirtiness of the work she performed with never a complaint or whinge. She was a champion. You have a lady of the same ilk. They are hard to find. Kudos to you Marina for what you do. Cheers.

Copper coat is definitely worth it. My boat was done 10 years ago and it's still good. My outdrives are antifouled with seajet (can't coppercoat aluminium) and the weed grows faster on the seajet with almost no weed on the coppercoat, although seems to get the same amount of barnacle growth on both. Also helps to protect the gel coat as its epoxy based.

If the support bracket for the propeller shaft is not loose when you pull on it, the lamination is not needed, so we repairmen have only done it as an emergency solution when it is leaking and it is loose.
But if there is a little slack that you feel, the lamination on the inside should be removed, often these are quite loose and can be partially broken off, as the boats at that time were often built in polyester of "environmental quality", paraffin oil was then added, which meant that if not sanded before laminating on a hardened surface, so this loosens over time. So the surface around has to be sanded clean to healthy glass fiber and a new laminate over the attachment on the inside. On the outside, sand clean, apply Sika primer and put a neat joint around the support bracket in the joint against the hull. It becomes a bit flexible and lasts better over time.
Keep fighting and good luck in your work.
Use the chopped carpet in small pieces and carefully roll out all the air and excess polyester. The polyester we repairmen use here in Sweden is called 720-800 and has the best adhesion. If the boat is not built in Vinylester then you have to use this, and then it is usually a little red in color where you sand clean, and smells a little sweet. But I think it looks like your boat is built in regular polyester. English and American boats are often built in Vinylester.

    Good Job guys!
But just a little comment: when using a claw hammer as a lever against the gel coat or indeed just fibreglass, use a flat peice of metal sheet between the hammer head and the fibreglass, to avoid cracking the fibreglass. The flat plate will even out the forces across the surface.
I wish I had started a project like this when I was younger!
    Best wishes.

When ordering your prop you will need to quote the engine speed, gear reduction, HP rating etc. the supplier should be able to advise on the diameter of the shaft. If the P bracket and tube are solid it would be easier to keep the same shaft diameter. A stainless steel shaft can be a smaller diameter than a bronze one for the same strength.

Hi Stewart, fyi the replaceable cutlass bearing inside the P-bracket are available with different ID ( shaft sizes) with the same OD size to fit the P-bracket. This might allow you to use a larger or metric shaft.

You 2 are doing great.. Seabird Stu is going to look amazing after all the effort you are putting into it.. I think I would definitely use copper coat if it's less maintenance. The little higher price is probably to keep people from using it so that they spend more time and effort with the other bottom paint.. you 2 are going to have one of the nicest gulfstar 41s around.. your videos are always entertaining ..

Hi Stu & Marina, thanks for the Saturday fix😊
That said, coppercoat is very good, I saw a "Combat approved" video where some Russian subs are rubber coated(exterior) sounds like a good idea. If you spend winter on Seabird then you might start refurbishing the interior, stay well, I love you both

      Hiya,
Hope you're well. How's your week been?
      Always like reading your comments.
We want coppercoat as then we can forget about it for a while.
Plus in the Mediterranean, a lot of countries won't let you antifoul your own boat.
      Cheers for watching 😃

Yes to copper coat, done correctly, it will last at least 10 years, when we do it, we give a 10 year warranty, if you want to sail the world, then you don't have the hassle of finding some where to get the boat on the dry, just dive and skrabe it a bit, with a brush, from time to time, but a realy great job, your doing, thinking that if you don't want to leave the boat in winter, you could just do some little boat work for others.

  • @sailorpete136
    @sailorpete136 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Well done, all progress is good. With Coppercoat it would appear that incorrect application is a high cause of failure so all the best with that program.

It should be boring to watch and yet I look forward to seeing each episode.
I think that your calculus with regards the copper coat is right on the money.
P bracket should probably be protected by the prop shaft anode if the bushing is metallic.
Don’t erode your days off together too much. You’ve earned the privilege of each others company doing the things you like together which is very important for a healthy relationship. Go well both. ❤

Coppercoat is good as long as it is applied in the correct manner otherwise it’s a total failure as the previous owner of our boat found out. You could really use one or two extra people to get it applied.

Copper coat is a good osmosis barrier coat do big so bad an idea but a couple of coats of ablative after the regular epoxy primer would be easily removed in a few years after you have done all the important work, rebuilt the rig , sales etc etc etc..

i don't know if you know the trick 'pastry pouch', but, when you prepare a fairy compound ,
