Tattoos were not supposed to be shown on TV (or anywhere in public) in Japan back then as they were only associated with gangs such as Yakuza. It's loosened up a bit since, but even nowadays, bath houses in Japan can deny entry to people (especially foreigners) with tattoos. There's still somewhat of a social stigma, especially in rural areas.
@@RickVaughn This same thing exists in South Korea as well. Several K-Pop girl group members have tattoos and they have been forced to wear skin colored bandages/coverings to hide them. Wheein of MAMAMOO & Chaeyoung of Twice have a lot of tattoos that have been hidden over the years.
