First ran across these guys in 1981, buying an album at Tower Records in San Jose. Been a fan of all the band members ever since.
I bought records at Tower on Winchester Blvd, loved that place.

You're right. Remove the chorus and supplant Basie, Mama Don't Want No Peas an' Rice an' Coconut Oil and it fits perfectly. That's kinda swinging.

This was definitely their best live performance and quality presentation of it as well. Definitely one of the best moments ever caught on tape.
This is the real deal bad boy rock N roll, these guys busted out when everyone was going nuts over billy squire, journey, stevie nicks/tom petty, etc. They were like nothing else at the time, yet like everything cool that came before. They were fun and looked fabulous. This is how it's done kiddies !
The Stray Cats brought Rock-a-billy out of the shadows. I've been a fan since the first album.
One of my college friends in the early 80s had copies of the first UK albums he let me borrow. I was hooked immediately. Over the years I've collected some memorabilia and a lot of their records including several obscurities with otherwise unreleased songs. The gem of my memorabilia collection is an application for the use of the Stray Cats name and logo on clothing as a registered trademark, signed by all 3 guys with their actual, legal names.
That bass, the one drum and cymbal, and that great gretsch sound!
I' m reading Slim Jim's book right now... page 52 - I just had to google this, they nailed it.. as usual.

seeing all the stray cats fans in this section feeling nostalgic at this is amazing!! i got into these guys super recently and i’m 15 and just seeing the pure talent coming from brian and the guys is insane. love it
if you dont already play you should pick up a guitar and learn and help keep this stuff alive for the future. My son is 15 and can play stray cat strut.

Saw them 5 times. First back in early eighties was the best. Old rundown dive called the Grand Circus Theater. Perfect venue even though we thought the balcony was going to crash down on top of us.
I remember watching that when it came on. Knew of the Cats but seeing that live...It was so mind blowing compared to what was on the radio at the time. Caused me to deep dive waaay back. Not unfamiliar with the influences but I really began to listen. Damn Setzer was so young and listen to how fully formed those songs were. Great Stuff.
I always think that too. He really had a vision and got his skills both singing and guitar up to such a high level at such a young age. Really impressive and with great songs to boot.
I remember this the first time it was on....I went out to Tower Records on Beach Blvd in Buena Park Ca the next day and bought their first album in the "IMPORT SECTION" of the store....Classic!!
I have that import album to this day. The Cats were huge in Britain before Rock This Town hit charts in USA.
I bought "Built for Speed" in 1982. I remember watching this performance. "Fridays" was a good show.
Now it's July 2024, who still listens to this music ??

My FIRST concert ever!! The Bus Boys and Stray Cats at Northrup Auditorium, Minneapolis. Even back then I knew Brian would be a huge success!
The busboys had exited my vast musical repository in my mind and cassette collection, I was at shows at Northrop also, Bryan ferry and Roxy music, Natalie merchant and..., wonder how many more I've forgotten...
Saw them in concert 5 or 6 years ago in Dallas....they were still great!

What a talent they had! And so cool about it!
It seems that Fridays actually did a better job at booking live musical acts than Saturday Night Live when you look back on it. It did have the advantage of being in the best part of the 80s so there was were plenty of new acts that woudl become legends like DEVO, the Clash, and these guys who were just starting to get noticed.
totally agreee-- Fridays had the hottest UK acts that we only saw on fanzines like CREAM in NA
@@lacunachannel3841 They were light on the black acts though. I think that had the Bus Boys but there is no way they should not have had Prince and Rick James - just to two 2 hot young acts at that time.
@@christophertracy2807 Very good point, and that explains why I didn't get into hip hop soul and real black music until much later. Interesting that Sun Ra was a guest on SNL though. Good thing we have the Internet now.

Saw the Stray Cats on their 40th anniversary tour at the Greek Theater in LA. They were the best! I would see them again in a hot minute! They are so good. I have also seen the Brian Stetzer Orchestra 3 times. The energy of the Stray Cats is so explosive! Love them!

Saw them with The Busboys opening for them. Good show by both bands.
Le groupe est incroyable et dans les années 80 ya eux pleins de groupes qui s'appelait teenkats et autres. Mais Brian et ces groupes Stray Cats et Rockabilly riot Ou Setzer jazz band sont toujours les numéros 1 Brian et ces musiciens formidables font des tournées sold out partout dans le monde.
Brian n est pas un guitariste sous estimé ces les nanars qui disent ça il est le meilleur et sans égale. Beaucoup d admiration pour Brian qui est très intelligent.
