One of my college friends in the early 80s had copies of the first UK albums he let me borrow. I was hooked immediately. Over the years I've collected some memorabilia and a lot of their records including several obscurities with otherwise unreleased songs. The gem of my memorabilia collection is an application for the use of the Stray Cats name and logo on clothing as a registered trademark, signed by all 3 guys with their actual, legal names.
I have a good quality & revealing vintage stereo. Can you recommend your favorite Stray Cats records? ..both in performance & recording quality? Thanks, D-
@@davidstein9129 Any greatest hits package is a good start. My favorite obscurity is a song called Lookin' Better Every Beer. There are several live performances on TH-cam. My favorite is their appearance on the US TV show Fridays.
I remember this the first time it was on....I went out to Tower Records on Beach Blvd in Buena Park Ca the next day and bought their first album in the "IMPORT SECTION" of the store....Classic!!
This was awesome! Loved it! The cameramen on this show were awesome at their job. They got the band and all the action. The video quality is great and love that it’s totally live. 🎶
seeing all the stray cats fans in this section feeling nostalgic at this is amazing!! i got into these guys super recently and i’m 15 and just seeing the pure talent coming from brian and the guys is insane. love it
if you dont already play you should pick up a guitar and learn and help keep this stuff alive for the future. My son is 15 and can play stray cat strut.
This is the real deal bad boy rock N roll, these guys busted out when everyone was going nuts over billy squire, journey, stevie nicks/tom petty, etc. They were like nothing else at the time, yet like everything cool that came before. They were fun and looked fabulous. This is how it's done kiddies !
The busboys had exited my vast musical repository in my mind and cassette collection, I was at shows at Northrop also, Bryan ferry and Roxy music, Natalie merchant and..., wonder how many more I've forgotten...
Saw them numerous times,.was never disappointed. Great shows! Saw BSO a couple of times again Great Shows! Setzer always amazed me...so effortlessly played to perfection.
I remember watching that when it came on. Knew of the Cats but seeing that live...It was so mind blowing compared to what was on the radio at the time. Caused me to deep dive waaay back. Not unfamiliar with the influences but I really began to listen. Damn Setzer was so young and listen to how fully formed those songs were. Great Stuff.
I always think that too. He really had a vision and got his skills both singing and guitar up to such a high level at such a young age. Really impressive and with great songs to boot.
It seems that Fridays actually did a better job at booking live musical acts than Saturday Night Live when you look back on it. It did have the advantage of being in the best part of the 80s so there was were plenty of new acts that woudl become legends like DEVO, the Clash, and these guys who were just starting to get noticed.
@@lacunachannel3841 They were light on the black acts though. I think that had the Bus Boys but there is no way they should not have had Prince and Rick James - just to two 2 hot young acts at that time.
@@christophertracy2807 Very good point, and that explains why I didn't get into hip hop soul and real black music until much later. Interesting that Sun Ra was a guest on SNL though. Good thing we have the Internet now.
Saw them 5 times. First back in early eighties was the best. Old rundown dive called the Grand Circus Theater. Perfect venue even though we thought the balcony was going to crash down on top of us.
I saw this when it aired live way back when and I swear there's a woman there whose boyfriend spun her in the air in front of the camera and she gave the whole world a beaver shot.. I kid you not...of course its been edited out since then which is sad because that was a microcosm of the times and it defined the movement
Had the privilege to see them many times when they were called the tomcats fresh out of high school they had to leave New York to be discovered in Europe crazy Also saw them Amityville New York kicking off their 40th anniversary tour to say they Burned the house down would be an understatement
Brian was the ONLY guy who had tats back then. I'd never seen them except on old sailors. 😂 I was a Mod so couldn't go to their shows but you can I listened to them at home
I had a bunch of stickers on my bedroom door one of which was the stray cat logo of the cat with a pompadour. My mom was pissed. Guess what?: They are still there after nearly 40 years.
I had to play this song I got a yard full of cats couple of them showed up about 2 years ago now there's about 20 of them outside they eat more food than I do love this song
Real music. No autotune, no BS, play and sing. Brian and crew are the real cowboys....
Word !
No backing track, just straight up instruments plugged into amps and talent. God I love these guys.
I was just thinking that. How dry this was but so perfect.
@@123spleege "dry"
You mean "real," but yeah (that's OK).
@@bim-ska-la-bim4433 Dry is a studio term. little or no effects.
Brian Seltzer is so underrated.
Setzer is an incredible player.
Brian Setzer is a fantastic guitar player!
Lee and Jim are excellent players too
One of my favorites!!! :)
@@tomy.18466:06
I watched it when it first broadcast and I became a Stray Cats fan that night.
I will never not love them!
I saw them that night too. I'm a guitar player that went from a distorted tone to a clean tone that night too.
Me too! God love Fridays and SNL from this time period I got turned on to so much music them when my young mind was ready for it!
Me too!
It was that cars game for me. Was rocking to it with a broom😂
First ran across these guys in 1981, buying an album at Tower Records in San Jose. Been a fan of all the band members ever since.
I bought records at Tower on Winchester Blvd, loved that place.
Если что ... Есть почитатели котов в России 😎
This was definitely their best live performance and quality presentation of it as well. Definitely one of the best moments ever caught on tape.
On top of everything else - they've got some great vocal harmonies going on . Great band.
Bam in your face...The Stray Cats.
I have seen them live in San Jose CA. A small club...they killed it
I'm a Cats fan forever...
Sheeeit. Hendrix , Van Halen , Clapton , Knofler , Page , Berry and whoever , Brian Setzer is right there with those names. Period!
I bought "Built for Speed" in 1982. I remember watching this performance. "Fridays" was a good show.
Great performance! Fridays always had cool musical guests.

Lee Rocker is a fantastic bass player
All of them are the best 👍
That bass, the one drum and cymbal, and that great gretsch sound!
The Stray Cats brought Rock-a-billy out of the shadows. I've been a fan since the first album.
I remember this the first time it was on....I went out to Tower Records on Beach Blvd in Buena Park Ca the next day and bought their first album in the "IMPORT SECTION" of the store....Classic!!
I have that import album to this day. The Cats were huge in Britain before Rock This Town hit charts in USA.
Really smooth sound and it really swings. Not rocks, swings.
It's like beatnick and Frank Sinatra.I could listen to them forever! And the Beatles and the Bee Gees!
You're right. Remove the chorus and supplant Basie, Mama Don't Want No Peas an' Rice an' Coconut Oil and it fits perfectly. That's kinda swinging.
Saw them in concert 5 or 6 years ago in Dallas....they were still great!
Dancers and the actors dancing so fucking cool. Melanie Chartoff was so sexc !! Oh, and the Stray Cats were BADASS
I heard that Robert Plant once introduced Brian setzer as the greatest guitarist he ever worked with

My FIRST concert ever!! The Bus Boys and Stray Cats at Northrup Auditorium, Minneapolis. Even back then I knew Brian would be a huge success!
