I am glad that you showed that even though it is not one of those high, fancy Tacomas or Jeeps, the rav is still good.

What I got out of this was that every vehicle smaller than an FJ will need a lift kit to go offroading. That makes me a little sad since I sought out the Rav4 over a Kia Soul for hiking deeper into the woods.

With a bit of practice and skill (don't go out your first time alone), you'll be fine. If you get nervous, have a friend walk you through a route, move rocks, and get practice with approach and departure. Your RAV4 can get you many places! I'm in Israel for a few years for work, people hear off-road with vehicles like the RAV4 and Duster all the time. I'd recommend a tow strap, come-a-long and a small shovel in the trunk. Add a bolt on skid plate just to be safe, and you're good to go! Just don't try following a buddy in their 4Runner or Wrangler and you'll be fine. You've got this! Look up the "LADA Niva v Suzuki Jimny Dacia Duster: OFF-ROAD RACE & BATTLE!." This is what I see out and about in Israel.

Not a bad video but I was hoping for more details on the experience, the title makes it seem like you are going to get an overall overview / review of the Rav in different environments off road.
By the way, if anyone can anwer this for me, here in the UK 2 row Rav's are advertised as 5 seaters but when you look at pic's it clearly shows the seatbelt buckle locations right under the ass of the alleged 5th person so therefore all three rear passengers would not be wearings eat belts if a third passenger was added into the back? or is there a way around this which I've missed?
    cheers

Ryan Laurie I have a 2009 RAV4 4wd. I’m researching a lift and all terrain tire swap for mine. Current height is 7.5” clearance, but with a lift and tires, could increase it to round 9.5” to 10.5”. Look at Colorado Mountain Rally, or Tema Off Road. CMR has 2” lift blocks and chamber adjustment bolts for about $550 to $650 a kit. Tema is 1.5” lift kit, but I don’t think they offer camber adjustment bolts.

Now we have old pickups and side by sides we use for that you can get a lot further back in the ruff stuff with them. It’s all about having the right tool for the job. But I’m sure a AWD one goes good. Just not gonna go where a side by side is!

@@PatrickRich untrue all rav4's have locking center diffs i think the new rav4's are better than the old ones. i been testing my 2017 rav4 against my 1992 4runner sr5 with real 4wd and lsd in the rear and to be honest my rav4 has been able to do anything if not better than my 4runner has ever been able to do and thats that my 4runner has a brand new set of bfgoodrich KO2 31" tires and my rav4 has tiny 29" hankook dynapro atm tires (not as agrssive as the ko2 in any way) so i think the rav4 is working fine and the capabilities are just as capable as the old ones if not better

@@roellopez6638 Sorry friend, thats not actually true. Generation 3+ of the rav4 can't lock the center diff, because they don't HAVE a center diff. They use a pto/rdm unit to transmit torque to the back axle. Weber state has an excellent video about that exact system. th-cam.com/video/BMv_v9IBugU/w-d-xo.html The center lock button on Gen 3+ rav4 doesn't actually lock anything, instead it sends a signal to the computer to apply maximum clutch pressure to the RDM (up to 25 mph, under acceleration only, disengaging with large steering input). See here www.rav4world.com/pdf/2006/2006_4wdsystem.pdf It functions to the consumers in a similar way to an actual locking center diff with the exception that it can't apply 100% torque to the rear axle. You'll note in the pdf linked the language is "maximum torque limit". In a true center diff lock the front and rear axles are tied at all speeds and under all conditions and they can transmit 100% torque to either axle until something breaks. In a modern crossover system this is no longer the case, torque is sent to the rear as requested by sensors or the user up to a predetermined limit based on the strength and size of the clutch pack. i.e. at a certain torque limit the clutches slip, acting as a fuse of sorts to prevent driveline damage. A vehicle with a mechanical center diff lock is is like a part time 4wd shifted into 4wd hi. A vehicle with a computer controlled clutch pack is only 4wd inasmuch as the rear axle demand is less than the torque limit of the clutches and only when the clutches are applying maximum pressure. I wrote a very detailed thing about it if you want to learn more oppositelock.kinja.com/how-modern-4wd-systems-work-and-why-they-dont-suck-as-b-1821928762
