  • Warlord Games Epic Battles Waterloo Rulebook - A Closer Look
    Epic Battles Waterloo uses the Black Powder rules system, but rather than just supply the standard Black Powder rule book, Warlord Games have edited the book to better suit the Epic range - in this video I take a closer look at the book and the changes.

    Excellent video! It's really fantastic news that Warlord put in the effort to have the Period/Battle Rulebook produced and included in the box! Talk about Added Value this one is Prime!! So, hats off to John Stallard and the Warlord Team who worked extra hard to put this book together in time for it to be included in the Box!!! I placed my Pre-Order with my local shop oddly enough named "Waterloo Miniatures"! Having watched this video, I'm really looking forward to the phone call telling me my order has arrived!! WOW!!!😃😃😃

    A nice collation of all the relevant Napoleonic content. The Albion Triumphant books are great, with some fantastic painted miniatures and artwork, but to have everything needed in the starter sets is a huge win for Warlord.
    I think all the scenarios are old, just from different places, there's a pdf with a couple, not sure if it was from a Warlord event or some such, again great to have everything together.
    It may be a few years away, but already looking forward to ECW!

    I hope it does well because I can appreciate the risk on a big project with a large up front cost.

    This is a very tempting product all round. I know next to nothing about the Napoleonic period or gaming it, but a self contained intro like this, in plastic, is really appealing. I do think they would do well to make a smaller box with a small force for both sides. If they can do it for £60 and get it into shops like Waterstones and John Lewis for Christmas, I reckon it could be huge.

    Personally I don't like Black Powder for Napoleonic battles (my loss - some like chocolate ice cream, I like Vanilla) but really appreciate the review. Certainly seems an excellent production. Not sure if you mentioned such but wondering if they have included some of the optional rules from booklets such as the Russian campaign booklet? I believe that particular booklet included a few optional rules that "overcame" many of my (and others) objections to the basic rules, ie; no more "ganging up" columns on the frontage of a line, no more moving three times in a single turn yet still firing with full effect, et al. Anyway, great stuff, 👍.

      Thank you for watching. I haven’t had chance to read it cover to cover yet, but have r spotted those changes to the ‘core’ rules. I have all the supplements myself, and certainly plan to use those myself. I guess they see those as more optional that required changes (like the unit frontages etc), though it would have been nice - but they could be there and I’ve not seen them yet.

    I absolutely love this scale for a 4 x 6 table. Perfect for doing smaller engagements or a piece of a larger battle. I think in this scale you could probably do about a third of Waterloo fairly comfortably on a 4 x 6. Or a madeup scenario of a similar size.

    • @MiniatureRealms
      @MiniatureRealms  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I’ve been trying to work how much a 6x4 can take, I think in line you may only be looking at a Division or so. But if you have battalions coming on in column at different points etc, set some good objectives rather than just two lines smashing each other, then there’s space for plenty more.

    • @Edward-Plantagenet
      @Edward-Plantagenet 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MiniatureRealms We did some computer simulation, simply manoeuvering around a simulated 6x4. Wasn't actually that easy, especially once battalions started to open up in to line. It very soon fills up and, more importantly for me, limits the free space for cavalry and horse artillery movement and tactics. I get that WL wanted to go for the mass effect of standard Black Powder by using smaller figures, pity they didn't allow more flexibility by making the infantry sprues half as long so they could be mounted on 3 or 6cm. Probably too much work, what with the flank companies and command stands too.

      Yes absolutely, 6x4 is fine. You still need to be mindful of the size of the battle, as while the miniatures are small the unit frontage is still quite large, it you can still comfortably get a Divisional sized game in on that size of table.

  • @MrZkeggia

    Great content! Do you know how big is the table supposed to be for a standard game (is it 1000 pts?) and am I supposed to scale everything down including table size if I play with the optional rules about distances/ranges?
    I was thinking of getting a starter set but I feel I won't have a table big enough to field 1000s of models!

    • @MiniatureRealms
      @MiniatureRealms  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you 😊
      I don’t tend to use use points in my games, I look at OOB or make up fun scenarios etc, so I couldn’t say what a ‘standard’ game would be. I’d say you can definitely do bigger games that with 28mm on more standard sized gaming tables (6x4/8x4), but with frontages still being relatively big you’re not going to do massive games without a larger table.
      At its heart Black Powder is a divisional level game anyway, and you can definitely do that on a 6x4 now with this, and have more room to manoeuvre than you would in 28mm. But for larger battles I’d still recommend a bigger table at a club with some friends.

      @@MiniatureRealms 6x4 is 182cm x 120cm. A battalion in line using the bases as supplied will be 24cm, a brigade in line 96cm, so half the table width. You could get some kind of action on a 6x4 but even a division will be a struggle IMO. Pity the infantry bases are so difficult to cut down.

    • @MiniatureRealms

      Probably slightly more suited, the style of warfare lead to more waves of lines/attacks (often, not always), so I think that fits better, and uses the space more. At this scale it’s table width that suffers more than depth.

    Excellent video. The more I see about this release from WL the more I'm impressed. Interesting that they have increased the artillery battery size from 1-3 bases. I recall lots of discussion on the WL forums and on the BP FB Page about the pros and cons of increasing the base size to even two (1 gun always looked to thin on the ground to me). Three bases of artillery looks better IMO.
    I'm just gutted that sadly this will likely be a no go for us. As we discussed, we play mostly on 6x4 tables and planned to trim the infantry strips down to create smaller frontages as 24cm is WAY too big on that size of table. Sadly though, as is obvious from the images of the sprue images you kindly sent, cutting those infantry bases will be extremely difficult without causing significant damage given the bodies are actually moulded together in tight formation. The clean up of that would also be extensive and very time consuming. I even considered using fewer bases per unit but that then precludes you using pretty much any formation other than line. No way round it as far as I can see. Pity :(

    • @MiniatureRealms
      @MiniatureRealms  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you Ade, glad you’re enjoying the videos, even if sadly it looks like it won’t work out for you because of the frontages you play. I’m just going to reduce my battalion’s by a base on smaller tables when I need space (can always keep them off table and add on for nicer looking squares if needed, as it’s line that’s the problem).

Anyone know where I can find forums / where to start vids (not unboxing). How many points is a standard battle? How many points are in a starter army? Aprox how many points will be in an infantry box, for instance? Could I play it on 6'x3'? C
    Thank you & cheers!

    • @MiniatureRealms
      @MiniatureRealms  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Matt, thank you for watching. BP is far less points focused than Bolt Action, but they’re are points provided with the army lists, but many prefer to play scenario based and/or work from list based on historical actions. So saying all that I’m not sure you could describe any points level as standard, it’s just not a conversation I see (though it could exist in some games groups).
      Having said all that I’m sure you can guess my next answer, I’ve absolutely no idea how many points worth is in the box, it it’s a huge amount, probably twice as much as you could fit in a 6ft table.
      Saying all that, you could play on a 6x3 table, the essentially works at Divisional level, and you could play a divisional game on that length, maybe two brigades of 3-4 regiments plus a cavalry brigade. The 3ft width at this scale isn’t as much of an issue.
      That brings me neatly on to the rules. BP is a sandbox set of rules designed to play big relaxed games, a very different approach to Bolt Action. The rules in the set have been slightly adapted to Epic scale and Napoleonics (the core set is designed to work for the whole BP period), so in this set they’re removed stuff that’s not relevant, adjusted some wording to match the miniatures and the period, and changed the rules for the basing and set up of units for the new models. They also include ’optional rules’ to reduce ranges (to half in inches or cm), this will help with you 3ft table width etc.
      At its core however, BP is BP, and gamers have been using it for smaller scales well before Epic scale, this is just a more formalised approach. It’s probably worth searching ‘how to play BP’ etc, there’s some good ones out there, and the official Warlord one with the author Rick Priestly is great. Some of my favourite battle reports are done by 7thSon, it’s 28mm, but you will get a great idea of how the game plays.
      Finally, Facebook is good for groups. Some of the older running Napoleonic groups don’t have much Epic in, but the best one (slightly bias as I set it up) is ‘Warlord Games Epic Battles Napoleonic’, currently at over 1.4k members and full of newer players and older hands.
      Hope this essay helps a little.
