There was a comic here in Italy a few years ago, dealing with why we should continue space exploration. Early on it has a Victorian Englishman trying to spread the idea technological development is useless, and does so by sending a hundred letters through physical mail and spending a lot in postage, and only gets a dozen answers - and then cuts to a modern teen posting the same message on his social media and getting thousands of likes and replies. That brief scene was a masterful answer to anyone doubting why space exploration is a good thing.
Space is a bargain. As Dr. Carl Sagan said: "What does it cost to send a mission to Jupiter? One attack helicopter. And how many of those do we have? Looked at in this way, space is a bargain." I agree - the benefits derived from the investment in space far outstrip the cost.
Space exploration was originally a function of US/Soviet rivalry. Now we have many nations with their own independent space exploration programs. What are the ESA, China, India and Japan planning to do in space in the coming decades? Imagine if China gets humans on Mars first, what will be the reaction of the West? Great channel.
If a star exploded and a wave of gamma ray is coming this way to our planet, what can we do to defend ourselves? Also, between the sleeper ships and the ships that can jump to hyperspace, which one is more possible in the near future?
Space exploration is expensive? Consider Carl Sagan's reply: how much does it cost to send a mission to Jupiter? One attack helicopter. The same price. And how many attack helicopters do we have? For the money spent, and the benefits received, space is a bargain.
