Have you guys watched the Apple TV series "For All Mankind"? It plays out a hypothetical timeline of what might have happened if we hadn't given up on the moon. In their story, they end up with a growing base on Mars by the '80s. Another interesting plot twist is the Russian actually beat us to the moon, but it just makes the US more determined to surpass them by being first to set up a moon base, which they do...then move on to Mars. Some of the series is a little bit of a stretch, but I enjoy it....and it's food for thought.
I think that's exactly what US needs, an actual competitor. Now if only countries aren't busy with wars, some superpowers could have giving more thought to space exploration
Fun fact: a special chapter of the Sailor Moon manga fearures an aspiring astronaut... And it casually mentions a Moon base and shows a spaceplane capable of reaching it without boosters while carrying a dozen people and a high yield nuke (they needed to deviate a comet), with the implication it's an international effort involving also Russia. Guess finding the remnants of an alien civilization changed priorities...
Two factors to consider, 1) no economic motive to send humans beyond low earth orbit 2) unmanned spacecraft have greatly advanced and performed amazing things (Cassini, Galileo, Osiris-Rex, Mars rovers, New Horizons etc). Man in space has been replaced by more capable and economical unmanned spacecraft.
You know what worries me about the lunar human lander component of the Artemus program? As you mentioned, SpaceX and Blue Origins have both been awarded contracts to build moon landers. The SpaceX lander is scheduled to be used for the first landing, and Blue Origins for the second I believe? As you show in your animation, the SpaceX lander has a very tall design. Blue Origins is much lower with a wider base, seeming the much more stable design, especially with craters and uneven surface on the moon. I was already worried about a SpaceX lander tipping over on landing. Then a few days ago the Odysseus lander, with a high center of gravity and not very wide base tips over on its landing. This reenforces my fear of a potential disaster with the SpaceX lander. Plus.....I haven't heard of much progress going on. SpaceX still hasn't been able to put a Starship into orbit yet, let alone design one that will make it to the moon and land. The SLS has already proven it can get to the moon and back with the successful Artemis I mission. Artemis II will take 4 astronauts around the moon and back within two year, unless delayed. But Artemis III is what has me concerned, and it's all about the lander. I can see this being the sticking point. I hope I'm wrong. It would be pretty cool to see one of those tall space ships sitting on the lunar surface! Plus, the lunar gateway is such a cool idea, I hope that will become a reality. Also talk of eventually putting a satellite network around the moon for communications. Maybe GPS? Now we're talkin'!
Im 43, my grandfather and his generation of men and women were not weak like we are. Can modern men even survive walking onthe moon today. Look at the roman men, when compared to men of today the romans make us look pathetic. If you study the skeletons of romans they were so much more powerful...
Worst part those responsible for moon missions are almost all dead now.. we never learned from their generation.. if we kept it going we would be so far ahead its sad
I know why we don't have a base on the Moon. It' activities would've resulted in a massive explosion on the sub-surface & blown the Moon out of orbit & into deep space way back in the late 90s!!
