- The bus with a steam engine for 30 seats was converted from a Sentinel DG6P truck produced in 1931. After 30 years of operation, the truck was sent to a landfill in 1960, but two years later it was bought back, giving a second life to the car. Having passed all necessary technical checks of transport, the steam bus went on its first flight in 2006 to Whitby on the east coast of Britain. Later, Elizabeth was transferred to the city of Weston-Super-Mare
Elizabeth is equipped with a 2-cylinder double-action steam engine mounted under the chassis. Steam is provided by a vertical boiler inside the cabin. The boiler operates on coals, while the cabin is made separately from the passenger compartment, so that dust and vapors are minimized.
The rear wheels are driven by a chain, the box has two gears, one for normal road use and a lower gear for use on steep hills or when maneuvering.
The only bus in the world with a steam engine
I still remember seeing Elizabeth when I was 4 or 6 and have been on her many times.Wish I could see her now.But i remember the very distinct feeling of being inside with the smell of Smoke, grease, coal and the smell of old wood inside.Always gave me goosebumps stepping in the thing!!
Love that unique steam bus.
There are a few steam buses left in the UK, and possibly other countries too, so not actually the only one in the world.
there never were any steam busses these are a modern day creation
@@BigLMedia Steam buses were prevalent in Japanese cities in the 1930s and 1940s.
@@BigLMediasome of the very earliest mechanically propelled road vehicles were steam busses, when horse drawn stagecoaches were still around, and there are several photos of at least one steam bus operating in the Leek area (in Staffordshire) in the 1920's/1930's.
There appears to be 2 vehicles - 1 a 3 axle wheeler, the other a 2 axle wheeler (making heavy goining up a hill, like a traction engine)
Changing gear must be an art !
@associatedblacksheepandmisfits
No gearshift required there was a chain drive from the engine to the rear axle.
The amount of power to the engine was controlled by adjusting the valve timing and throttle opening.
To reverse the engine was set to run backwards with the valve timing.
weird that its the only one in the world since I just watched like 15 videos of steam busses.....
"Only one in the world". But there's two different steam busses in the video....
I've seen them next to each other. I found the one shown in the middle with the flush roof in the garage of a cottage I rented for the week in the Lake District. The man who owned the cottage was working on it at the time.
There are 5 that I know of. 2 of them are Sentinels like this one. 2 are Fodens. The 5th is a replica of an ancient one.
@@7822welshsteam yeah
Very old but still made its job done well
Early 1943 our town had similar bus but that used to run on firewood
That sound more like a gasoline bus retrofitted to run on wood gas.
It was common in all europe during the war as fuel was in short supply.
Imagine measuring the fuel economy... lbs. of coal per mile . Plus water!
Really amazing idea 👍👌👏👏👏
🔥🔥 impressive
Feel like locomotive
The minimal and road version of a locomotive steam train.
Guys , its elizabeth
That poor old bus...has to go up all those hills..give it a break
Its built like an iron building underneath. Sweet of you to worry really but unless they let it fall into disrepair it will outlast all of us meat bags.
She drives again!
