@associatedblacksheepandmisfits No gearshift required there was a chain drive from the engine to the rear axle. The amount of power to the engine was controlled by adjusting the valve timing and throttle opening. To reverse the engine was set to run backwards with the valve timing.

That sound more like a gasoline bus retrofitted to run on wood gas. It was common in all europe during the war as fuel was in short supply.

Janney, AAR, Buckeye, and Knuckle, are all correct, but it is a type of automatic coupler, so the title isn't completely wrong.
@@harrisongrant8558 Is there an air brake system that automatically couples, so that that brakeman does not have to manually connect the two hoses?
@@rlewis1946 with most types of knuckle couplers, mostly on freight trains, the air hoses still have to be connected manually. There are some types of knuckle couplers that do have automatic air and electric connections, like the Tightlock coupler, but these are mostly found on EMUs and DMUs.
