- Here we see the 1931 built Sentinel Steam Driven vehicle that was converted to a Bus to give trips around Whitby in North Yorkshire during the Summer months. This privately owned 30 seater 11 ton beast has tremendous acceleration as cab be seen as it climbs from the Harbour to the Higher Town. Roadside and on-board footage is seen. Driven by Vernon, commentary by Viv and fired by Vern Jnr...what a team!
It's wonderful that you've seen her many times....it's a wonderful machine, lovingly cared for by her owners.....Bob
A trip down memory lane watching this I love how you got the fire shooting up at the front!
It was an unforgettable experience Michelle Thank you for watching and your kind comments.
Nice one Bob,i am glad you had a ride on Lizzie, she is a mighty fine piece of machinery been around a lot of years i hope you enjoyed yourself in my neck of the woods.......John
They are very rare and a real treat for all the family to enjoy.....The owners deserve all the success they get...they work hard enough for it....Bob
What a treat Bob! The bus is immaculate and in great condition, a real tribute to the folks who have restored and maintained it. Thanks for sharing this piece of history! I have a friend who now lives in Cheshire but who was born and brought up in Whitby whom I'm sure will love this one!
My son and me have both ridden on this steam bus. :-) :-) :-) I love Sentinels, wish I owned one!
It's a rare and exciting way to travel Martin, thanks for sharing your love of the Sentinels.
Lovely and encouraging to see these old fellows still running ....and damn well!
I wish , I could put my fingers in it and share the pleasure.
Congratulations to the team.

I do miss hearing, smelling and seeing Elizabeth at Whitby. Ever since I was little I always went on Elizabeth. When I went on her for the last time I got a postcard signed by the driver and the tour guide. I wish she would return. Maybe some day.
She was an amazing vehicle, the last I knew is that she was at Weston-Super- Mare in Somerset, but where she is now goodness knows.
@@robmasterman last I heard she’s still in Weston - Super - Mare.
now there's something you don't see every day!
very nicely shown bob :)
Amazing! This is the first time I see a steam bus. The image of the cockpit with flames is impressive. Thank you Bob.
Philippe
Thanks Paddy, this is an incredible machine, and I am delighted that watching gives you so much pleasure....Regards...Bob
What a wonderful creation Bob. Thanks for letting us see it. Sorry I am so far behind seeing what you have been up to recently! Hopefully today i shall have time to catch up!
This is just amazing, never seen, Bob! Thank you for sharing! :)
Went on this today, the power is unreal!
What a beautiful vehicle! Must go to Whitby to see it! Thanks for showing.
what an extraordinary vehicle, and thanks for the video & trip aboard
Tommy
Let's hope it stays at Whitby for many more years, as it's an amazing this to see in operation.....Thanks again...Bob
A fine trilogy of films Bob of your travels up north. I enjoyed the three of them thank you. All the best ......Tim.
Until you've experienced it first hand, it's quite unbelievable....Thanks for watching....Bob
Great shots! Love this Steam bus! See her every time I`ve been to Whitby. :)
Really enjoyed the ride Bob, Thanks!
Thank you for watching, the people that operate this magnificent machine, work very hard to keep things going....it's not always [possible to have smiling faces, although they have loads of enthusiasm and commitment...Bob
It's an amazing beat David, with unbelievable acceleration for such a heavy machine...That's steam power for you....Bob
gohh thats a big maid of a beauty there! This ones a unique steam vehicle to have around
What a beautiful machine!! 😍
It's very rare Ryan, I believe it moved from Whitby to Weston Super Mare.
It’s like a combination of Elizabeth the Vintage Steam Lorry and Bertie the Bus!
Elizabeth + Bertie = This
A great description Mario....thanks very much.
What a great looking vehicle, and very well filmed. Will look out for it the next time we are in Whitby.Chris.
Now! Thats the way to travel. Love it.
once again bob nice video like it sounds nice as well thanks for posting
nick
@flyingscrapyard I'm delighted that you've enjoyed my video, and thank you for your kind comments....Bob
Wow! Very impressive, Bob, but of course all of your video's are very impressive to me, I enjoy seeing your wonderful Wales, through your camera lens.
Oh Bob! another Gem of a video, superbly crafted as always, a good mixture of street shots and inside the bus too. That was a first for me too, and what a beauty! amongst the twisting roads and those shops, she looked at home, if anything looked wrong it was the modern stuff. So wished I'd stopped off at Whitby now when I visited the Royal. Loved the flames, how cool did that look - H&S fans look away... ha ha
A massive thumbs up Bob, I really enjoyed it.
Paul :-)
I had a feeling you'd enjoy that Bob! Good Ride!
Thanks for that...Bob
Certainly an impressive beast Bob, they have made a wonderful job converting to a bus. Sadly, I'm old enough to remember steam lorries around the dock roads in Liverpool
Great video Bob. I have travelled on this but I can't remember when, was a few years ago and I haven't seen it at Whitby since. Nice memories. Was hoping you'd catch the fire on the decent and you did a great job of doing so.
Cheers
Kyle
Had a trip on this a few years ago, so thanks for the memory Bob. (shame about the face though)
cheers Mike
Ive seen her many times , she sounds and smells and looks fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@trainfart Thank you, it is one of those things that have to be seen...it is an amazing machine....Bob
awesome vehicle, a one of a kind for sure, excellent quality video I enjoyed the ride
@PhilbruProduction Thank you Philippe, it is an amazing thing to see....truly unforgettable...Bob
Went on it last year. Big surprise was how it flew up that steep hill on the end of the esplanade, it must be 1 in 6 up there. As others have said its surprisingly quiet inside with mainly just a bit of gear whine. Great fun,
@kenbrowne1947 Thanks Ken, I was thrilled when I came across it during the visit, and the ride I shall remember for a long time....Bob
Great stuff, i'll have to pop and have a look while i'm up there.
@penninefilms It certainly is and something I've never seen before..Thanks as always...Bob
a very nice job on the steam bus Bob
It must get pretty hot in that cab for the operators
Very great job.
I'm surprised to see what still exists for vehicles Bob.
@BritishRailways60163 It fascinated me and I was so impressed by its acceleration.....Thanks for watching....Bob
Bet the kiddies love it as it rings of Thomas and his friends.
An unique vehicle, loved by all, but unfortunately no longer based at Whitby.
@johnwood57 It was great to go back again John, you were often in my thoughts as I went around Scarborough especially...Bob
@connrail It certainly is Tommy, thanks as always for your support....Bob
There's nothing like it Larry, an amazing vehicle....Whitby is in North Yorkshire...in the North East of England....Regards...Bob
I never knew there was such a thing, and 11 tons! I can't help feeling the smiley face on the front diminishes its lofty status somewhat. I like the sign "no spitting", it must have been full of miners (with associated bronchial issues) taking summer holidays.
@MG06ZT It's a must Keith, the pull up the hill from the Quayside is something else....Bob
Nice interesting video thanks.
My pleasure, please pass on my best wishes to Fred and Wilma :o)
@acw71000 It's quite amazing to see such a large machine accelerate up that gradient in Whitby......Thanks again Austin....Thought I'd replied to you yesterday, but it appears not...Bob
@Marillionmad Thank you, it is something rare and very special....Bob
this is brilliant, the only bus worth travelling on
@4472100 It was a steam lorry originally and was converted to a steam powered bus with the capacity to carry 30 passengers...Bob
great stuff.
@EMuksteam I've never experienced anything like it......there's a new destination for you both...:o))....Bob
Certainly the British excel themselves with paint, polish and sign-writing. Must see in person if we get over there one day.
@Daikenboy I totally agree.....thanks for your comments....Bob
@lionbill My pleasure, it was excellent value for money...Bob
@gusneaker It appeals to the kids and us oldies....if it keeps the customers coming and supporting them then why not.....Thanks again for commenting...Bob
@MG06ZT Glad you enjoyed it Keith, it's a must if you visit Whitby...shame about not having the camera with you....Bob
I'd loved to have a lovely ride on that or any similar type .( SADLY! Never had the pleasure ) But, maybe one day it might happen. The guide sounds like she's from Australia or New Zealand LOL!!!
It was an unforgettable experience, but sadly no longer at Whitby, as the cost of running her was too prohibitive....This Steam Bus I believe was unique....Thanks for watching....Bob
It's an unique opportunity, and well worth doing....Bob
Hi Robert,
And thank you for the upload. Why is there not more of these steam buses around particularly in my area!
+mrbluenun This is a one off, and unfortunately no longer operates in Whitby, which is very sad....Bob
+Robert Masterman Hi and many thanks for the reply. Sad its not happening regularly but a great sounding vehicle and I love all the hand done sign written messages in different places. One dad was a Sign writer and it looked pretty special. Thanks.
My pleasure and thanks for your kind comments....Bob
@howarth004 Great news Dave, and the fares are so reasonable...a wonderful experience without a doubt....Bob
@Bevoin1970 I thought you might Paul, I was out down West yesterday, and saw an old pump engine just rusting away at the side of the road.....I thought...Paul would like to have that.....yet another little project...hint...hint....Thanks as always to my No1 fan...Bob
@pwalpar Thanks Walter, I've never experienced anything like it before...Bob
@WoelkerVideo Vielen Dank Gunter, und ich freue mich, Ihnen gefallen hat ... das ist ein seltenes Fahrzeug ... Bob
@siobhan104 Thanks Tim, it was a very enjoyable break, especially peppered with some trains...Bob
@bobnweaver It certainly is Jeff, you must give it a go if you're down at Whitby....a wonderful experience...Bob
Well worth a ride...nothing else like it .....Bob
Could you tell me what the "starting" looking handle is, please? Yes, how nice to see a steamer in regular service - and yes - if it brings in the crowds - at least one knows the face hasn`t actually changed anything!
Bev Wood I'm not sure Bev, but I imagine it's to drop the fire grate to get access to the burnt coal at the end of the day. Unfortunately this wonderful vehicle no longer works at Whitby....Bob
@lionbill Thanks Bill, glad you enjoyed it...Bob
I hate trips and outings that have a "guide" constantly nattering at you on a pa system so that you cannot enjoy the experience in peace, observe for yourself or conduct & enjoy your own conversations.
I suppose they have to cater for all types of customers, the pa system would certainly help visitors who may have little or no knowledge of the experience....Thanks for your comments...Bob
Robert Masterman True - but I have had some outings - eg, MV Balmoral & PS Waverley - completely ruined by constant, over-intrusive and largely unnecessary pa chit chat.
I often make videos of my various outings to which I sometimes add my own commentary, but the sound-track is all too often ruined by non-stop pa.
I totally understand where you're coming from, but it's how things are these days. I try and keep away from Stations whilst out videoing trains, as they also have to much residual noise foe my liking....Thanks again...Bob
Robert Masterman fffrrrrrrrrrrrttyuhgfde://
I do too
@eurodestination Over active imagination Gary...but what a sight...a wonderful sight to behold...Bob
@Firrboxfryup Thanks Jamie, it's certainly something special, the likes of which I've never seen before...Bob
@GreatWestern175 Not bad eh Ry, the strangest ride I've had for a while...but thoroughly exhilarating...Bob
@dbdrdbag It is a steam driven bus and has a stem engine powering it...the cost of a round trip is £3....Bob
I rebuilt the engine on this when it still had it's wagon body on it. It had broken piston rod.
What a wonderful thing to have been involved with Robert. Thanks for sharing your experiences with us.
@nickladey Thanks Nick, it was one of those unforgettable things to see....Bob
@canvids1 It's in their blood Wayne, a hardy lot...Thanks for watching...Bob
Oh Of course, I know how committed one has to be to so this sort of thing, I have a friend in the Railway Preservation Society over here and he is very dedicated to it
@rangieowner I certainly did...quite an unique experience....Bob
The face on the front probably appeals to the kids but personally I think it spoils the fabulous period appearance of the bus
I agree Thomas, but in these harsh times, the more people that can be tempted to use it, the better. Sadly she no longer operates at Whitby.
Heartbreak greeted the announcement that one of Whitby’s most famous attractions is set to depart this year, and the Gazette can exclusively reveal the final date she will carry passengers through the town.
Viv and Vern Smith, owners of Elizabeth the Steam Bus threatened to sell the 83-year-old after what they described as the latest in a series of disputes with “obstructive” borough council.
Now the Whitby Gazette can reveal that the couple will call it quits and the Elizabeth’s last day in town will be November 2nd 2014“We have been proud to mean so much to so many people and the support of the public will live in our hearts forever,” said owner Vern. “Whitby did fine before the Steam Bus and it will do just fine after she has gone, though trust us it hurts.”

What a shock Michael, this is one of Whitby's main Tourist attractions. Thank you very much for letting me know, and along with many others I wish Viv and Vern all the very best for the future, and to thank them for all the pleasure that they and 'Elizabeth' have brought to so many over the years they have operated...Best wishes...Bob
@molzips An enthusiastic family affair John...and the result is a great experience....Bob
@KBRAILVIDEOS It only runs during the Summer months Kyle, I missed the first flash of fire but thank goodness caught the second one...Bob
Amazing.....from Indonesia
Thank you very much Anteng, this is a wonderful vehicle which now resides at Minehead in Somerset....Best wishes from Wales.
@2002ibiza She's an amazing vehicle, and well worth a ride on if you get the opportunity....Bob
@mvjedforest When it's run by a family concern for a living Mervyn, then whatever brings in the customers must be acceptable....an amazing piece of machinery that has to be seen....Bob
I think all the power comes from the Drivers arms :o))...Bob
@robmasterman We gave it a try during the hoilday, its great fun, my niece loved it! Vern took it down to the marina and topped up the water, then he blew down the boiler - it looked great. Didn't have my camera, never mind!
Looks like fun to drive whit ha ha !
It takes a lot of skill to drive that monster, sadly it's no longer in use at Whitby...Bob
That was fascinating and very enjoyable, Bob. I was very impressed by how quiet it was inside the bus, so the commentary was quite clear- very rare in tourist transport. As others have commented, it would be better without the face, but Helen thought it was sweet, so opinion is divided!!....Mervyn
Excellent piece of machinery, nice to see steam still travelling on our roads.(C&A)
