  • These two old steam trucks are seen on a run into Wangaratta in North East Victoria. The Sentinel and Yorkshire are two of a few steam vehicles still operating in Australia, both were manufactured in England in the twenties

  • @unguidedone
    @unguidedone 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    would you get better power output by putting a generator on the steam engine and having the truck be powered in a steam electric fashion?

    • @calvingreene90
      @calvingreene90 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. You would lose efficiency with the energy conversion and steam also provides high torque at low RPMs. It is why it is so difficult to get steam trains started without spinning the wheels.

    • @trespire
      @trespire 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @unguidedone , I doubt it. Steam transmission is quite efficient, as long as the hot pipes are well insulated. Power delivery is unmatched with loads of torque at low revs.

    I am glad that the world decided to use internal combustion engines instead of steam. Otherwise the enviroment would be way worse. But one has to admit. Steam powered vehicles are so damn cool.

    • @tierneygibbs5117

      Tierney Gibbs Yes but the Carnot cycle engines are much more efficient than Rankin cycle.

      David Vermillion. The environment is worst now !

    • @StaxRail
      @StaxRail 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      David Vermillon believe it or not, steam engines (especially with the rise of synthetic coals) actually produce less harmful emissions than internal combustion engines. The white steam is pretty much water in a gaseous state, and the black smoke is carbon, which unlike mono nitrogen (car gases) is less harmful and more abundant in the atmosphere

    • @einszweidrei2047
      @einszweidrei2047 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      IC only works under high pressure and that creates a mess of undesireble gases and particles. External combustion can be fitted to perfect conditions. In the 1920s Doble shows how to build extremly efficent, clean and low noise steam-engines. They would easily make it threw todays ultra low emission laws without further treatment of the exhaust gases - not with burning coal but kerosene. Guess what we could do today by using lpg and ceramic-burners. What about water consumption? Let the steam condens back to water and use it again - like Doble and Stanley shows it back in the days.What about long heating up time? No problem with flash-boilers that creates steam almost immediately.

    Not impressed when the last driver emptied the ash from his fire then drove off and left it in the layby. That's just dirty and inconsiderate to other people. All he had to do was shovel it into a bucket and take it with him. I wonder if he picks up after his dogs, probably not.

      Except that they cleaned it up afterwards.
      These owners always use a third vehicle with a water tanker to make sure there is no risk of bushfire. How do you think they drove off without the camera??
      Editing fooled you, and your comment made a fool of you.
