Man! He's beating the hell out of that jake brake! ONLY A TRUE PROFESSIONAL TRUCK DRIVER CAN UPSHIFT THRU THE GEARS WITH THE JAKE BRAKE ON WITHOUT MISSING A GEAR!
Truth 3 years later. We just got a 1998 peterbilt 379 daycab with the N14 and it is way better than the c15 acert Jake's we got. They both sound nice but I like the n14 more now
I used to drive a log truck before I started work with the railroad. I had a 1992 red Peterbilt with a 400 Cummins and 10 inch straights with no muffler and I used to make some racket, especially with 40 tons of pulpwood. That was a nice video. There was a switch where you could switch between 2, 4, & 6 cyl. jake brake.
Sounds awesome! My family has one in a Freightliner wrecker and it screams with the jake turned on just like this. I have seen people next to us jump while sitting in the 4 wheelers.
I always keep coming back to this vid...the N-14 Signature 500/525 hp version is still my alltime favourite heavy truck engine, btw...(though 460+ are all good). Great sound!
It sounds amazing, but something as out it makes me miss when my grandpa had no muffler on a ford f650 with a c7 cat. Took a trip to Chico Ca from Sacramento in that thing, came back going "WHAT?!?"
cool dream. my dad was a diesel mechanic for quite a while. he was thinking about opening his own shop but the money wasnt good enough. Now he has his own small company of 4 trucks in maryland hauling gas.
I'm with you man, 90% of the critics here have probably never laid a hand on the wheel to anything bigger than their mommies honda civic for a quick grocery run.
Music to my ears! I rather drive that around all day over some quiet thing. Love the loud sound! Sounds kinda like the Balrog(Fire Demon) in the Lord of the Rings movies, they problably used truck sounds for it.
The turbo has a wastegate, which is what dumps the excess pressure. It activates when he hits the clutch. Without a wastegate, when he clutched to change gears, the engine would rev high because of the residual pressure.
this i didn't know. i'm only 19, and i know that some of these guys are truck drivers and diesel mechanics, but diesel power is basically my life and i try to learn anything and everything i can about them. thanks for your info! i also frequently drive an international 8100 with an M11 Cummins, but this has no jake brake
this is freakin awesome thank you so much for shareing this awesome video this was a five star *** video until i hooked my pc up to my new tv wich is also hooked up to my 350w stero with subwoofers cranked up as loud as it gose gives this video a new rateing of 1 billion stars
I like cummins but they have had head problems for years so me and my grandpa switched over to cat. Well now that they don't make truck engines anymore we are slowly switching back to cummins... Both good diesel engine makers!!! :)
There was a really loud 5 axle kenworth t800 dump at work yesterday and today and i think it had an n14 but never got the chance to ask the driver.....but it sounded badass!
haha, reminds me of the time i drove my uncles truck,i was goin about 50 on a 35,and got real close to a little honda van thing, and it took off when i hit the jake.i and my uncle were laughing our asses off......fun days.....
dude this is the best jake braking video i can find on youtube... Sure is a bad ass sound man, to bad we don't have that shit over here. thanks for the upload
A jake brake works on electric solonoids, an extra cam lobe and an extra valve in the cylinder with a collapsible stem. When the jake is on, the solonoids turn on a magnet, which make the valve stem extend out, allowing the camshaft to open the valve when the piston is at max compression (just before the fuel is injected)...allowing the compressed air/fuel to burn outside of the cylinder.... the turbo spools up, increasing intake pressure and providing more stopping power while using the jake.
my buddy has a older volvo with a n14 and a 5in straight pipe.ive ridden with him a few times hauling corn and we always use the jake at every corner and stop sign
I must admit Papabugs, the 600HP C16 Cat fitted with twin sports mufflers and 7" stacks sounds pretty damn fine when under load or Jacobs @ 1700RPM. So much smoother than a straight thru Cummins will ever be. Then again, that's my humble AUSSIE opinion.
I absolutely love shifting with the jakes on. We've got at 88 Peterbilt 378 dump truck where I work with an N14 in it. Shifting with the jakes on is the probably the greatest thing in the whole fucking world. Love doing this. Jake brakes are prolly my greatest love, if I drive a truck without any sort of engine brake in it, it's like I'm driving naked lol.
Correct, master switch on the dash to turn on/off. When switched to the ON position, Jacob's is activated when both the clutch and accelerator (both fitted with micro-switches) are not depressed, hence why when you change gears without clutch whilst switched to ON, Jacobs will come on for the short time your foot is off the accelerator as you change gears
not just keeping the clutch switch disengaged, but there is a switch on the fuel petal too....if you are smooth with your foot you don't even need to couch the clutch with the jake engaged....i do it all the time
My uncles got a 2001 kw with straight 12in stacks and the best time to jake in it is with a full load of bales going down this hill about 6 miles from our house about 65 lol its pretty cool
Actually Jakes will come on in Neutral. The dip settings control all functions. So if you don't have them set you will get different operations. Some wont work under certain speeds and some wont work unless your in higher gears. It all depends on how the computer dip settings are set. My truck has a Signature 600 Cummins, it works until it gets to 800 rpm and stops, but at any speed. Thats the way I like it. Some companys had their jakes set like this for their own reasons. GO STRAIGHT PIPES
First of all its Jacobs and secondly its the name of a company(not a specific product) that originally made engine brakes for commercial trucks. Now they also make exhaust brakes which is what's available for the cummins B series. Most people are talking about a compression release engine brake when they say Jake brake not an exhaust brake which is just a butterfly valve that chokes down the exhaust flow out of the engine. An engine brake actually opens the exhaust valves near TDC on compression
The jake (full name Jacobs) brake is prevented from coming on by micro-switches fitted to both the clutch pedal and accelerator pedal, ie as you use the jake brake to reduce speed, the jake brake is switched off as you change down gears and as you let the clutch back out is is switched on again... problem is though, when you race around like this cowboy and change gears without using the clutch, for the split second when you are not depressing the clutch OR the accelerator, the jake brake starts
this thing has the toughest sounding jake brake iv ever heard
Indeed.
Yriusbrksjdkkl?s!lysys!dadujdjhrhfdjzBsvfhxhdfdbdjxjxbdvdb♉♌♉♌♑O:-)
They like to break push rods if you use it over 1500 rpm.
@@bradleyselk9642 the newer ones...my n14 and mu C15 aint done it yet at 1800 rpm
Yes!
Gotta pop in just to listen every now and then sound never gets old. 👍
Man! He's beating the hell out of that jake brake! ONLY A TRUE PROFESSIONAL TRUCK DRIVER CAN UPSHIFT THRU THE GEARS WITH THE JAKE BRAKE ON WITHOUT MISSING A GEAR!
Pretty easy with a CAT. Been doing it since I was 20 years old
True pro won't drive with the Jakes on

N14 hands down my favorite jake.
Truth 3 years later. We just got a 1998 peterbilt 379 daycab with the N14 and it is way better than the c15 acert Jake's we got.
They both sound nice but I like the n14 more now
That is the absolute best sound I've ever heard, can't wait till I get my own truck to open it up like this lol

Drunk asf now watching this. Hell yeah bro!!
I'm glad I'm not the only one!
Best video on TH-cam and probably the most beautiful sound in the world. I could listen to this all day.
I used to drive a log truck before I started work with the railroad. I had a 1992 red Peterbilt with a 400 Cummins and 10 inch straights with no muffler and I used to make some racket, especially with 40 tons of

After a long day of fixing trucks for a living, nothing puts a smile on my face like playing this at full volume with the woofer cranked up.
Love that sound & love the jake brake
sounds like music to my ears
Sounds awesome! My family has one in a Freightliner wrecker and it screams with the jake turned on just like this. I have seen people next to us jump while sitting in the 4 wheelers.

3126e with a straight was the loudest small engine I’ve ever driven. Has to put the muffler back on😬
@lawnfarmer
I believe that's a 10 liter cat engine
cool dream. my dad was a diesel mechanic for quite a while. he was thinking about opening his own shop but the money wasnt good enough. Now he has his own small company of 4 trucks in maryland hauling gas.
Lol music to my ears. my dad has a m11 370 Cummins i wish it would sound like that.

Music to my ears! I rather drive that around all day over some quiet thing. Love the loud sound! Sounds kinda like the Balrog(Fire Demon) in the Lord of the Rings movies, they problably used truck sounds for it.
that's probly the most badass truck i've ever heard
I would have no problem doing that for a living and hear that all day!

Badass! I'm sure the neighbors loved it!
Cummins jakes are buy far the best!
the best exhaust ive ever heard on a tractor! bad ass
The turbo has a wastegate, which is what dumps the excess pressure. It activates when he hits the clutch. Without a wastegate, when he clutched to change gears, the engine would rev high because of the residual pressure.
Screw double clutching.
That sounds fucking awesome, fair play. I also love the hiss of the turbo.
this i didn't know. i'm only 19, and i know that some of these guys are truck drivers and diesel mechanics, but diesel power is basically my life and i try to learn anything and everything i can about them. thanks for your info! i also frequently drive an international 8100 with an M11 Cummins, but this has no jake brake

Yep, turbo is under boost then let off at shift, thats the noise in the exh, this guy is gettin into it pretty good
Now thats what a truck should sound like. Used to drive a 400 V8 Mack with straight pipes. Shake the pickets off fences.

I love this vid, nothin like a spirited country drive. awsome.
listening to this thru headphones .. brilliant !!
What a beast, wish our trucks sounded like this, but we got all this euro conformity here in the uk.
Cummins is one of the best englines ever.
Long live Cummins!
